Before or after the theatre |
712 1st Street South East Calgary, AB T2G 2G8 Canada +1 403 266 6628 |
Located in the Dominion Building, which was built at the turn of the century, the Auburn Saloon features a grand old staircase and high ceilings and is a popular hangout for the Live Theatre crowd; partly because it is directly across the street from The Epcor Centre for Performing Arts. Another good reason: their eclectic and upscale menu. Choose from fully-loaded homemade pizza, fancy salads, smoked salmon and their gourmet sandwiches, or simply drop in for a martini from their extensive drink menu. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Great place to meet for drinks |
1205 1st St SW Calgary, AB T2T 5S8 Canada +1 403 261 6674 |
Long before 'Survivor' hit the airwaves, this cool little drinking establishment has been quenching the thirsts of Calgarians. Their fruity cocktails are some of the best in town, with ingredients including everything from guava pulp to dry ice. Located just out of the downtown core and attached to the Drum and Monkey Pub, it's an ideal place to head if you are looking to enjoy some cocktails with friends in a lively and fun atmosphere. Just be careful; these drinks may be sweet and fun but they pack a punch. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Comfy pub, stylish fare |
1136 Kensington Road NW Calgary, AB T2N 3P3 Canada +1 403 283 7443 |
It was only a matter of time before Victor Choy, proprietor of such trendy bars as The Mercury and Concorde, made his stylish mark on Kensington. The fine-lined woodwork and big windows make this a classier-than-average pub, but it's the menu that truly impresses. This is gourmet pub grub. To go with your beer there are bacon-stuffed burgers with roquefort mayonnaise, sandwiches of pepperoni on rye, baked salmon, and curried chicken salad with peaches. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Some of Calgary's best live music |
811 1st Street SW Calgary, AB T2P 7N2 Canada +1 403 263 1650 http://www.beatniq.com |
Put your cool on and head down (literally) to this hip spot perched in the basement underneath the Piq Niq Café. It may be tricky to find but that just enhances the modish demeanor, and once you do find it and get a martini in hand you can easily hop on the hepcat spirit with surrounding seductive atmosphere and funky vibes brewing in the joint. The club is a gateway for rising local artists and established players on the local and national circuit. The bar serves drinks throughout the evening and there is a small snack menu available. Cajun Cuisine in Cowtown |
316 3 Street SE Calgary, AB T2G 2S4 Canada +403 264 6419 |
This old meat-packing plant has retained its loading dock facade. The interiors too, go with the outside, and have plastic tablecloths and cheap furniture. If you are looking for a posh joint, this is not it. But the food is great. On weekends, treat your senses to some jazz and blues while you delve into some Smoked Meat and fish. The staff is helpful and will help you choose sauces and spices. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Oh my Guinness! |
1201 1 Street Southwest Aull Block Calgary, AB T2R0V3 Canada +1 403 261 6674 |
This comfy bar serves up what any self-respecting pub-goer requires: big tables, football on the telly, and Guinness, Guinness, Guinness. It is hard to imagine that the businessman who birthed many of Calgary's posh and trendy cocktail bars, including the attached Bamboo Tiki Room, could also be behind such a laid back haven for beer. But why ask why? Just sit back, gnaw on some chicken wings and swallow a pint. There are 11 beers on tap. You don't even have to know how to pronounce martini. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Firestation decor |
1030 9th Avenue Southeast Calgary, AB T2G 0S7 Canada +1 403 234 0508 |
This warm and inviting pub occupies a turn-of-the-century firehouse and plays out the firefighter theme throughout its open and airy interior. The barroom ceiling is a good thirty feet above the hardwood floor; the four other rooms all have balconies overlooking the bar, with separate areas for dining, drinking, pool and darts. Vintage firefighting equipment such as axes, fire-coats and ancient pumps line the walls, while a huge ceramic Dalmatian, mascot of all firefighters, guards the bar. They serve a full compliment of excellent burgers, steaks and other American foods. Review © 2007, Wcities |

You'll swear you're in Dublin |
114 8th Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB T2P 1B3 Canada +1 403 262 0708 http://www.jamesjoycepub.com/ |
A visitor walking through the wide front doors of this revived heritage bank building may quickly feel they've died and gone to Dublin. From the brews on tap (Guinness at three different temperatures and many other ales), to the acres of dark wood and utter absence of TVs or pinging video gaming machines, this is the green isle revisited. The food includes modestly priced pub fare such as soups, stews and carvery meats. For a big snack, try their Irish take on nachos. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Haven for local musicians |
2139 33rd Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB T2T 1Z7 Canada +1 403 249 2263 |
This friendly bar is a favourite of local musicians as a place to perform and patronize. The menu features classic pub fare such as sandwiches, burgers and chicken wings; the beer is tall, cold and reasonablet. They also offer a brunch on Saturdays and Sundays from 10a-2p. The stage is occupied seven nights a week with folkies, guitar gods and goddesses, blues artists and the odd fiddler. Karma hosts an acoustic open stage every Wednesday night. An eclectic nightclub |
801B 17th Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB T2T 0A1 Canada +1 403 541 1175 |
The Mercury is a clean, well-established cocktail bar, which has been a part of the club scene for a number of years. A DJ spins tunes on weekends and the menu features fusion-type fare, combining influences from India, Canada and the Orient: you can order noodles dishes, chicken entrees and homemade soup. The weekends are busy, so if you want to avoid a line-up, head out early. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Trendy and original |
520 17th Ave Southwest Calgary, AB T2S 0A9 Canada +1 403 229 1986 |
Ming sports a decidedly modern industrial decor and caters to the trendy urban professional bar crowd; most of the clientele are young professionals looking to show off their latest designer outfits and dates. The cool decor consists of stainless-steel stools and tables with plumbing-fixture railings and stamped-steel stairs. Patrons consider Ming's atmosphere and martinis to be the best in the city; they specialize in creative martinis with catchy names like "The Jane Goodall." In terms of standard bar food, the cuisine here is original—the house special is sweet-potato fries served alongside banana ketchup and mesclun greens. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Warm and friendly |
1153 Kensington Crescent North West Calgary, AB T2N 1X7 Canada +1 403 296 3200 |
With the startling number of Celtic pubs sprouting up in town you'd think Calgary's civic planning department is run by the Guinness family. Still, no one is complaining. Molly Malone's is one of the better new pubs in the trendy Kensington neighbourhood. Subdued lighting, intimate booths and a huge bar make for a relaxed pint, and if you are having trouble deciding, the ubiquitous Guinness-propaganda on the walls offers some suggestion. The menu features a variety of beer-inspired pub fare such as Smithwicks fish and chips and ploughman's sandwich. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Elegant dining with uptown flavour |
609 7th Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB T2P 0Y9 Canada +1 403 264 1000 http://www.quincysonseventh.com/ |
This is the place to go if you have a craving for red meat; nothing will satisfy like a big hunk of prime Alberta beef. There are so many steak choices on the menu, that there is only have room for one chicken entrée. They also offer 12 other beef dishes as well as a rack of lamb and wild mushroom bisque that are particularly satisfying. Quincy's decor is a rich combination of light and dark woods, and the result is an atmosphere of high-end comfort. Review © 2007, Wcities |

British country pub |
1503 4 St SW (North of 17th Avenue) Calgary, AB T2R 0Y3 Canada +1 403 244 7757 |
One of the first attempts at capturing the look, feel and sensibilities of a small village country pub in the U.K., this stop has remained popular for more than 15 years. Located just a few blocks south of downtown in a rambling old building (legend has it as a former funeral home), there are three distinct bar areas with booths and tables. There are also comfy couches, some near fireplaces. Come summer, there's also a heated patio area. There are some 30 beers, many of them imported and starting at about CAD 5 a pint. The menu, meanwhile, tilts towards finger foods, burgers and sandwiches—though the latter can be as adventurous as turkey, strawberry and Brie on sourdough (CAD 9). Review © 2007, Wcities |

Relaxed attitude and good burgers |
534-17th Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB T2S 0B1 Canada +1 403 245 3333 http://www.shipandanchor.com/ |
This pub has a mellow warmth (except on live music nights) well suited to extended conversation over a few pints of dark ale. Its dusky interior has a subtle nautical theme. The low-key atmosphere is enhanced by music played at a moderate volume and the lack of a dance floor. This bar is frequented by both urban hipsters, casual ski-bums from the mountain towns and local students. No matter which night you visit, you are guaranteed to see an interesting mix of patrons.
