Craving falafel? |
2208 4th St SW Calgary, AB T2S 1W9 Canada +1 403 541 1189 |
This Lebanese restaurant is perfect for a midday falafel sandwich or evening couscous feed. The menu features a large selection of traditional Middle Eastern specialties such as mezza, kabobs, lamb chops, shwarma, and baklava. There are also Lebanese twists on western dishes: Aida's Caesar salad is tossed with pita chips and orange blossom water flavours her lemonade. Those unfamiliar with Lebanese cuisine need not worry: the menu gives detailed descriptions of each dish to assist neophyte diners who don't know their rookaak from their tabouleh. For garlic lovers |
2206 4th Street SW Calgary, AB T2S 1S9 Canada +1 403 228 0866 http://www.garlicclove.net/ind... |
If you enjoy the robust flavor of garlic, check out the signature dish of a restaurant famed for its indulgence in the healthy herb. Its steak—marinated, saturated, garnished and sauced with garlic—is sure to overpower even the strongest breath-freshener. The tidy and welcoming restaurant is outfitted in a traditional Italian style, with antique wine bottles intertwined among the vines lining the walls. For those who aren't enthusiastic about garlic, there are a number of unseasoned dishes and desserts on the menu. Even the air inside, however, is saturated with the sweet and strong scent of the "stinking rose." Review © 2007, Wcities |

One of the newest upper-end restaurants to grace the Stephen Avenue Mall restaurant area, The Belvedere is both urban and rustic, with a rough-cut elegance that is a refreshing change from Calgary's many, too-serious dining establishments. The menu features continental fare, seafood, wild game and Alberta beef specialties, all prepared with fresh local produce in a stunning, contemporary presentation. Located next to Figbelly's on trendy 17th Avenue, Brava Bistro is a sit-down version of the famous take-out joint with the same name. Its contemporary and breezy atmosphere makes it a great place to relax and replenish after a long day of shopping. The menu offers rather exotic North American fare and a large selection of sandwiches, including a slow roasted pork sandwich with a ginger pear sauce. Complement your meal with any one of the many varieties of white and red wines available by the glass. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dark wood paneling and hardwood floors set a classy mood at Caesar's; the service is impeccable and the food is mouthwatering. Because of its popularity, reservations are recommended. Overlooking the banks of the Bow River, La Caille is a tad expensive, but well worth it, especially if romance is on the agenda. You can choose to sit upstairs in their formal dining room or downstairs by the large stone fireplace. The food is French Continental with offerings such as shrimp, scallops and mussels in a white wine sauce. They also serve game, pasta and beef for their entrees. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A haven for Cajun |
317 10th Ave SW Calgary, AB T2R 0A5 Canada +1 403 269 8889 http://www.canneryrowrestauran... |
Specializing in Cajun food since before it was hip, this dark and woody bar and restaurant in the south-of-downtown Beltline district serves up New Orleans-style R&B and jazz music with food fresh from the coasts of Louisiana and Canada. Diners can find a table or park themselves at the 12-seat oyster bar to watch the kitchen crew get to it on moderately priced classic dishes like "Our Famous Blackened Snapper" and Jambalaya. The operation sits right below an upscale sister, McQueen's Upstairs. Wines by the glass run from CAD5-CAD10. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic, exotic French cuisine |
139 17 Avenue Southwest (between First and Second streets Southwest) Calgary, AB T2S 0A1 Canada +1 403 228 5690 |
Long Calgary's most prestigious French restaurant, this is where the Mercedes-Benz crowd heads for power dinners and special occasions. The menu is an exotic blend of the traditional and the adventurous, such as roasted breast of pheasant or sautéed ostrich medallions. Set in brick and stone quarters, the restaurant also features a wine menu with more than 450 selections. The decor offers an elegant chateau-room feel, with meals served on fine bone china and wine in crystal glasses. Do not show up wearing jeans if you want to get past the front door. A Southwestern California Cuisine restaurant may now be a cliché, but this place was one of the first and the food is consistently wonderful. The menu includes pizza with fresh pear and gorgonzola and Chilean sea bass with southwest tamale and ancho citrus chili sauce. The wine list is extensive, with more than 20 wines available by the glass. The decor manages to be both casual and elegant, and the secluded patio is one of Calgary's best. This is a perfect spot for a quiet dinner. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Gourmet dining out of downtown |
1315 1st Street SW Calgary, AB T2R 0V5 Canada +1 403 266 3339 |
Mescalero's has been one of Calgary's better restaurants for a number of years, offering California cuisine and tapas with a Southwestern flare. Unusual offerings, like Grilled Scallops on Butter Lettuce and Radicchio (CAD12) and Peruvian Brick-style Chicken Breast Supreme (CAD21), share the menu with more conventional fare—Portobello Quesadillas, for example (CAD9). They also make a mean margarita. A bright lounge is done in heavy reds and blacks. There is also a patio and a store selling interesting Mexican gifts. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Osteria's superior upscale Italian cuisine has been tempting the palates of Calgarians for so long, that the owner offers her cookbook, "Antonietta's Classic Recipes," for sale on the premises as well as in local bookstores. Sophisticated without being stuffy, this is high-class dining in a relaxed atmosphere. You will find gourmet Italian dishes, veal, chicken and seafood lovingly served with attention to detail and service. In addition, there is a very extensive wine selection. The weekday lunch crowds are usually heavy, so reservations are highly recommended. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Owl's Nest personifies upscale dining and is located in the heart of downtown Calgary. The restaurant is bright and beautiful with hardwood floors, linen tablecloths and napkins, and beautiful plants and greenery. They offer a delicious brunch on weekends, which includes homemade omelets and hash browns, as well as an assortment of vegetables, soups and baked goods. They have one of the largest wine selections in the city, and their lobster bisque and veal medallions are their most popular dishes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Italian refinement |
1223 11th Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB T3C 0M5 Canada +1 403 228 3558 |
The refined atmosphere here seems like an injustice to the food, which is served in such large portions that a lumberjack would be hard-pressed to finish it in one sitting. Seafood is the house specialty, prepared using the same spicy Italian herbs that make its pastas so interesting and flavourful. The Clam Linguini is especially rich and creamy, and takes full advantage of the chef's seafood mastery. The fresh flowers that cover every surface spice the air with a sweet aroma, and a piano player tinkles at soft Italian classics throughout the evening. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fine dining at its plushest |
125 8 Avenue Southwest Calgary, AB T2P 1B4 Canada +1 403 263 3262 |
Formerly housing the Bank of Nova Scotia, this heritage building on Stephen Avenue is now the home to one of Calgary's fine dining rooms. There are few restaurants this plush in Calgary, with huge chandeliers, marble bartops and a curved Opera House-style staircase. The menu matches the decor, with elegant dishes such as salmon carpaccio and rosemary-scented rack of lamb with marsala. There is a separate lunch menu, a tapas list in the lounge and an upstairs humidor with cigars and fine ports and cognacs. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fine food from Naples |
24 4th Street Northeast Calgary, AB T2E 3R7 Canada +1 403 232 8901 http://www.ilsogno.org/ |
This elegant Italian dining room is a welcome addition to Calgary's Italian cuisine scene. Specializing in cuisine from Naples, the kitchen turns out pasta, veal, lamb, seafood, rabbit and beef dishes traditionally styled with flavours of rosemary, fennel and fresh tomatoes. Their lunch menu offers up lighter fare, and a Sunday brunch features sublime dishes including the delightfully-named Eggs in Purgatory: a tasty baked egg dish. The small wine list features an international selection, and the decor is reminiscent of an Italian villa with fresh flowers, earth-tone walls and rustic chandeliers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The menu and daily specials at this hot spot are created by one of the region's top chefs. The varied selections feature the best of the predictable and the unusual, including Risotto of Chanterelle, butternut squash and ruby chard. The Italian-inspired market cuisine is a favorite of the loyal downtown business lunch and pre-concert crowd. The décor still holds a hint of its roots—the building originally housed the old Dominion Bank. By combining the warmth of the original stone walls and wood floors with a few modern touches, a hip and elegant dining atmosphere was created. Review © 2007, Wcities |
