It is not surprising then that the majority of excursions in and around the city glorify the great outdoors, from the deep powder of mountain ski resorts to the world famous trout fishing on the Bow River. Don't be alarmed if you feel that you aren't the adventurous sort—there are hundreds of more sedate ways to see the city. Tour bus packages are the easiest way to see the countryside around Calgary in a short time. Several companies provide motorcoach trips from major Calgary hotels to Banff, the Columbia Icefield, Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump and Waterton Lakes National Park. For the traditionalists, there are luxury train tours through the Rocky Mountains and southern British Columbia.

If you want to get off the beaten path and see parts of the mountains invisible from the tour buses, guided horseback rides are offered at several ranches in Kananaskis Country. These rides last anywhere from an hour to several days, and are relatively inexpensive. Some ranches also offer bed and breakfast facilities for those wishing to stay overnight.

Heritage Park Historical Village and Fort Calgary Historic Park are two sites that allow you to discover the pioneer way of life with turn of the century buildings, artifacts, and guides dressed in period costume. The Glenbow Museum details the history of Western Canada, as well as its exhibits on cultures the world over.

For prehistoric entertainment, the Calgary Zoo and Prehistoric Park features a recreation of life in Alberta 60 million years ago, complete with life-sized dinosaurs. If you want to take a drive in the country, visit the Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller, a small town two hours north of Calgary. This famous museum is a World Heritage Site, and is the site of hundreds of dinosaur fossil discoveries.

A relaxing time can be had floating down the Bow River, which runs from Banff to Calgary, in a canoe, raft or drift boat. Guides are available to help you navigate the twisting channels, and they can show you the best places to fish for the famous Bow River brook trout. Hunters seeking antelope, white-tailed deer and bighorn sheep in Kananaskis Country can secure the services of a guide through one of several outfitting companies in the area.

Canada Olympic Park, site of the 1988 Winter Olympics, is open for tours year round; its most impressive sites include the 90-meter ski jump and the bobsled track. The top of the ski jump tower is the highest point in Calgary, and can be rented out for parties and conventions. The Bobsled Bullet is a modified bobsled that you can ride at speeds of over 90 km/hr down the same twisted and icy track featured in the Disney movie "Cool Runnings."

For an aerial view of the city, hot air balloons and operators can be rented to gently waft you over the city. A balloon ride can last from an hour to an entire day, and is the most peaceful and relaxing way to take in the city, the mountains rising to the west, and the prairie gently rolling away to the east.

Attractions Canada recently voted this park the top outdoor site in the country. It features more than 1,100 animals from around the world and an ever-growing portfolio of innovative exhibitions, which allows guests to get up close and personal with grizzly bears, moose and wolves. Life-sized dinosaur models lurk in the badlands of the Prehistoric Park, and the more genteel setting of the botanical park includes a butterfly garden. See website for event calendar, educational programs, online ticketing and more.

These facilities are used both by high-performance winter athletes and by ordinary, adventurous, Calgarians. The bobsled track immortalized by four crazed Jamaican sledders continues to be used for World Cup events. The downhill ski slope is a popular entry-level spot for skiers, while the half-pipe area crawls with local snowboarders. The park also gets steady summer use by cross-country and downhill mountain bike racers. Inside the main COP building there is a restaurant/bar and the Olympic Hall of Fame and Museum. Park admission is free; activities vary in price.

Canada Olympic Park Bobsled Rides

Adrenaline rush

If you haven't felt a good adrenaline rush in a while, this thrilling, eighty-second bobsled ride down a track used in the 1988 Olympic Games is well worth the CAD45 price tag. Using a specially built bobsled that requires neither steering nor brakes, sledders rocket down the ice-covered track at speeds in excess of 90 kilometers per hour. It's all perfectly safe, but is sure to get your blood pumping again. For most, the first ride is enough, but if you're ready for more, the staff will help you gear up for a second run.

This centre gives visitors a hands-on look at early Calgary life. Fort Calgary lies on 40 acres of riverside park. The interpretive centre reconstructs the original 1875 fort, a facility Mounties built after being dispatched from the settled East to establish law and order among pioneers, and to stop the culturally devastating whiskey trade. Visitors can grab a bite of chow, or indeed a shot of whiskey, at the on-site restaurant.

Canada's largest living historical village is divided into a pioneer Northwest Mounted Police outpost and a 1910 Main Street. The latter has a working antique amusement park, with rides that are safe even for small children. Other attractions include a working full-scale locomotive thundering through the park, and on nearby Glenmore Reservoir, a vintage double-decker stern wheeler ship that takes visitors on lake cruises. Shops and restaurants are plentiful in the park, including a turn-of-the-century bakery. All park staff work in costume and character. Entertaining events for the whole family are scheduled year-round, including September's Fall Fair. Check website for full list of events.
