Traditional Christmas service at King's College Chapel |
King's College Chapel (King's College) Cambridge CB2 1ST United Kingdom +44 1223 33 1155 http://www.kings.cam.ac.uk/cha... |
Traditionally broadcast on BBC television and radio on Christmas Eve, King's College Chapel's world-famous choir celebrates Jesus Christ's nativity with the Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, a traditional narration of the Christmas story in word and song. The service begins at 3p, with entry to the chapel from around 1:30p. However, the popularity of the service means that a queue forms by 8a on Christmas Eve, snaking around the courts of King's College. To have a chance of entry, visitors need to be in the queue before 10:30a. Not suitable for small children; free admission. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Whizzes and bangs |
Midsummer Common Cambridge CB5 8DR United Kingdom +44 1223 45 7521 |
'Remember, remember, the fifth of November...' Cambridge celebrates this national event, Guy Fawkes' Night, commemorating the infamous attempt by the Catholic plotter Guy Fawkes to blow up the Parliament during times of lesser religious tolerance by the Protestant ruling class and king. An impressive fireworks display and bonfire is held annually on Midsummer Common. Throngs of people brave the cold and mud to watch the city council send off an impressive variety of fireworks and light up a bonfire on top of which burns an effigy of Guy Fawkes.
