For over 30 years the village of Ashton, near Peterborough, has hosted these conker (the nut from the horse chestnut tree) championships with men, women, children and teams battling it out. The organisers claim that people travel from overseas to take part! The event is held the second Sunday in October in this town about 30 miles (50km) north-west of Cambridge. Each "conker bonker" is provided with conkers at the championship to prevent cheating. Free admission. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Newmarket is considered the home of British racing. Featuring two courses; the Rowley Mile and the July Racecourse; some of the United Kingdom's most important meetings are held throughout the year. The track side and stands of each course have all that is exciting for spectators including bookies, refreshments, dining facilities and, of course, the thunder of approaching hooves. Some of the summer meetings include evening races and live bands. Regular meetings are held from May to November; check the Web site or call for specific race dates and times. Tickets prices vary.
