According to legend, dragon boat races have been an annual event since 277 BC when Chinese fishermen hurried to rescue a revered poet. In Calgary, this weekend race and festival has been held on the Glenmore Reservoir since 1992. In addition to the exciting races, the event features Chinese dancers, martial arts demonstrations, theatre, ethnic food, lion dances and fashion shows. What started out as a modest display of new cars in 1974 (seen by 80,000) has expanded to a 800,000 square foot exposition that draws over 250,000 visitors over 10 days in late February. Held in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, close to the CN Tower and Union Station, the show features more than 150 exhibitors. Now offering the Total Automotive Experience, the show helps visualize the dream everyone has of shopping for and buying a new car. What began as an agricultural fair in 1878 has grown into Canada's largest annual summertime party. Every June the city's Italian community gathers by the thousands for an annual homecoming celebration in the heart of Little Italy, along Preston Street. The festival kicks off on Friday evening with a giant procession in honor of Saint Anthony, the Patron Saint of Italy, and culminates in a giant street festival where revelers enjoy plenty of music and fine food.
