Cave of the Winds

Catwalk adventures behind the falls
Exit 141 off I-25
Niagara Falls, NY 14303
+1 716 278 1730
Short of going over the falls in a barrel, there are fewer places closer to the action than this series of walkways beneath Bridal Veil Falls. Located on Goat Island, this was once a cave but water erosion has made it too dangerous to explore. An elevator takes visitors to the base of the American Falls where wooden stairs and pathways bring them within 25 feet of the falls. You're advised to wear the raincoat and foot coverings as splashings are frequent. There is also a walk called the Gorge Trip with an incredible view.

http://www.niagara-usa.com/

It all began 12,000 years ago when a huge trench was carved to create this spectacular natural wonder. At the time, the Falls were about 7 miles down river in the Lewiston-Queenston area. In their present position, the Horseshoe Falls (170 feet high and 2,500 feet wide) on the Canadian side and the American Bridal Veil Falls (180 feet tall and 1,100 feet wide) are eroding at the rate of about 6 feet each year. Together, they pour about 200,000 cubic feet of water every second over the brink.

Calgary, AB T3E 5N5

The south end of Crowchild Trail or 37th Street SW brings motorists and cyclists to the long stretch of grass and trees that make up this park along the raised north shore of the Glenmore Reservoir. From the high bluffs overlooking the backed-up waters of the Elbow River, which supplies drinking water to the city's south end, visitors can look over the reservoir waters at small sailboats, kayaks and canoes. At the east end, the competitive Calgary Canoe and Rowing Club resides, whose athletes are regularly on the waters building their strength and skill. Looking west, visitors get an unobstructed view of the Canadian Rockies, over the brush and flats of the still-wild Weaselhead Natural Area. Endless grass on which to lay a blanket down and several proper picnic areas are perfect places to enjoy a meal. Public washrooms and numerous parking areas are available. The park is joined to the massive Calgary pathway system, enabling people on foot or wheels to travel hours in either direction. Within the park, the path is split into a paved walking path and a separate cycling/blading path. Paths encircle the reservoir, joining North Glenmore Park to South Glenmore Park.

Prince's Island Park

Beautiful and popular island
1st Ave and 4 St SW
Calgary, AB T2P 4R5
+1 403 268 3888
Statistics say that Prince's Island is one of the most used urban parks in North America. Come here on a sunny day and you will not doubt it. Way back when, the Island was used to catch felled trees floating down the Bow River from logging projects upstream. Now this bit of serenity in downtown serves as a favourite venue for joggers, football tossers, family picnics, flocks of Canada Geese, buskers, Shakespearean actors and nearly every major festival that Calgary hosts. This is also a great place for a quiet paddle down the river. Admission is free.

Built between 1827 and 1832 without the aid of power machinery, the Canal is one of Ottawa's oldest landmarks; it runs from the Ottawa River near Parliament Hill to Hog's Back Falls on the south end of the city. During the summer a wide range of vessels, including tour boats, glide along the waterway, while people in-line skate, jog or stroll on the canal's picturesque banks. During the winter, the canal is transformed into the "World's Longest Skating Rink," and is a hub of activity during Ottawa's Winterlude festival.

Located across from Ottawa City Hall on Sussex Drive, these pretty falls mark the end of the Rideau River's journey from the St. Lawerence River. The falls are located in Rideau Falls Park, within walking distance of 24 Sussex Drive and Rideau Hall.

Possibly the city's least crowded beach, this is a great place to go to appreciate the sea's wonder in peace and quiet. This is a long stretch of clean, sandy and swimmable waterfront in Point Grey. It is family-friendly and home to summertime events like a sandcastle competition in late July, beach soccer competition mid August and the Jewish Worldbeat Festival in late August. There are concession stands, change rooms, showers and grassy areas. Skimmers alert: this is the perfect place for skim boarding once you learn the optimal tidal conditions.
