The Fort Carré is built on the tip of a peninsula in Antibes, on a plot of land that was the site of both pre-Christian and Christian worship. In 1550, in response to the destruction of Antibes twice by the troops of Charles V, Henri II ordered the construction of defensive fortifications on the site. The four pointed bastions surrounding the round central amphitheater were completed in 1565. Rich in monastic tradition and history, the smallest and most distant of the two Lérins islands (1500m long by 400m wide and some 3km in circumference) used to be called Lérina.
