Croisette

Seaside Promenade
Rade de Cannes
Cannes, Alpes-Côte d'Azur 06400
France
La Croisette gets its name from a small cross that used to stand east of the bay. A favourite spot for locals and visitors alike, this wonderful promenade, in the heart of town, hugs the seashore and its beaches for several kilometres. To one side there's the Mediterranean, the Lérins islands off the coast, and the Estérel mountain range. On the other, there are palm trees, elegant belle époque hotels and fashionable boutiques. It is an ideal place to people-watch, especially during the Film Festival. Created during the 19th century,

Island of Lérins

Islands in the Bay of Cannes
Alps Riviera Provence
Cannes, Alpes-Côte d'Azur 06400
France
Several companies offer a wide choice of sail boats and boat trips to these beautiful and relatively wild islands. Less than half an hour's boat ride away, the smaller of the two islands, Saint-Honorat, has an active monastery, a museum and an abbey. While the larger, Sainte-Marguerite island's claim to fame is its old fort, where the legendary Man in the Iron Mask was imprisoned. Also worth a look while visiting this pleasant car-free sanctuary is the Musée de la Mer, which is home to an impressive collection of archaeological treasures including amphoras and other relics.

The blue onion-shaped dome atop this church is its most distinguishing feature. Église Orthodoxe Russe St-Michel-Archange was built in 1894 by Alexandra Skripytzine, a Russian exile. Its three golden crosses are also a symbol of Russian influence in the city in the 1800s. Be warned that it's usually locked, except for services on Saturday at 5p and Sunday between 9:30a and noon.
