A Chicago film institution |
5243 North Clark Street Chicago, IL 60640 +1 773 293 1447 http://www.chicagofilmmakers.org info@chicagofilmmakers.org |
In business for 27 years, this media arts organization has become a Chicago institution. Its mission is to provide "an opportunity for artists to make films outside the mainstream marketplace, to distribute and exhibit this work, as well as to build audiences and to increase media attention for it." To that end, it offers a $50 co-op membership that provides access to equipment, including 16mm production and post production equipment, information, resource and education. Equipment access is available on a 24 hour basis. Screenings of innovative independent film and video makers are held at the Kino-eye Theater, often with the artists there in person to discuss their work with the audience. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Spread over two floors, this is the premier film and video center in Chicago. Two screening rooms show foreign, art and experimental films that cannot be seen anywhere else, even at the Film Center of the Art Institute of Chicago. Not just for film screenings, the center also has the most comprehensive selection of videos to rent anywhere. If you do not have access to a VCR and still want to see that rare, silent gem, Facets can probably order it for you. Call the recorded information line or see website for current film schedules and reviews. Review © 2007, Wcities |

First-Rate Movie Experience |
Navy Pier 600 E. Grand Avenue Chicago, IL 60611 +1 312 595 5629 http://www.imax.com/chicago |
Quite often, this IMAX theater presents films in 3-D, but it also shows classics like 2001: A Space Odyssey from time to time. The 3-D experience combines computer-generated images and action-packed adventures on a massive theater screen spanning six stories, the largest screen in the city. Headsets with liquid crystal lenses and personal headphones enhance the sounds and effects, pulling you into the story closer than any other theater experience currently available. If you think 3-D is blurry images, headaches and bad movies, think again. Review © 2007, Wcities |

One of the biggest movie screens in the city |
330 East Ohio Street Chicago, IL 60611 +1 312 642 0723 |
Cross your fingers that the movie you want to see is playing here. If it is a big, noisy Hollywood blockbuster, chances are it is. As far as cineplexes go, this is the best. Boasting a mammoth screen, the main auditorium (theater one) also has the sound system to match. On occasion, it even shows restored classics such as "My Fair Lady" and "Vertigo." Call first and ask if your show is playing in theater one. If it isn't, it is in the run-of-the-mill auditorium upstairs, and you may be better off going someplace more convenient. Call for show times. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Historic Movie House |
3733 N. Southport Avenue Chicago, IL 60657 +1 773 871 6604 http://www.musicboxtheatre.com/ musicbox@musicboxtheatre.com |
From the music played before the show starts, to the live organ music played on the weekends, to the twinkling stars and wispy clouds projected overhead, a trip to this theater can be a romantic trip through time. Every month, the schedule is crowded with a huge variety of films, including foreign films, American art films and classics. The theater has been known to show such outlandish things as a 1970s 3-D adult film for the midnight and cult crowd. See website for showtimes, event calendar and more. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Concerts & Films |
3145 North Sheffield Chicago, IL 60657-4416 +1 773 472 0366 / +1 773 472 0449 http://www.victheatre.com/ victheater@aol.com |
The people who patronize the Vic Theatre do not seem to mind that it is somewhat rundown, dreary, dilapidated, dank and falling apart. It is all part of the charm of a crumbling once-luxurious five-story vaudeville house with floors and stairways of Italian marble. Customers pack in to hear various rock acts like Skinny Puppy, the Black Keys and Jackson Browne. On non-concert nights (which means three to four nights a week), the Vic is home to "Brew & View," an ongoing series of second-run and cult films (during screenings of which, moviegoers can drink cheap booze and smoke pack after pack of Marlboros. It is just like your living room back home, with a bigger screen, better acoustics, a balcony (with wonderful sight lines) - and a funkier smell. The Vic can easily accomodate 1400 people with seating for 1000. See Vic website for concert calendar. See Brew & View website for movie showtimes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Local Movie Theater |
1548 N. Clark Street Chicago, IL 60614 +1 312 642 2403 |
Located across from the Chicago Historical Society, this movie theater shows a wide variety of second run and art house flicks at discount prices. People line up down the block for the cult movies shown at midnight on Friday and Saturday. Do not expect much comfort, though. All four screens are pretty run-down, but you will have a fun time, nonetheless. And with its eclectic range of selections, almost everyone can find a movie to enjoy. Showtimes vary, call for information. Review © 2007, Wcities |
First-run Rogers Park theater |
6746 North Sheridan Road Chicago, IL 60626 +1 773 764 9100 http://www.villagetheatres.com... |
Movie-goers will find this to be a very cool first-run theater, with regular midnight shows like "Blade Runner" (Directors Cut), "Rocky Horror" and "The Wall." The theater experienced a major renovation, dividing the formerly one-screen theater into several small auditoriums. It now features tiered seating and DTS sound. At $7 a ticket, it is also the cheapest first-run house in town, so skip the multiplex monopoly and patronize this terrific, local business. Review © 2007, Wcities |
