After you leave here, you might long for the days when you could actually have visited the real thing. It seems that a 1940s nightclub has been on-and-off in the works in Chicago for years, but this club finally opened at Pipers Alley in Old Town. Singer Celeste Holme fronts a 16-piece band as you sip cocktails and buy cigarettes from the cigarette girl. This is an experience not readily had anywhere else in the country so it's worth a visit, if for no other reason then to dig big band. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This is perhaps the most authentic rock and roll venue in Chicago. The cover usually ranges anywhere from $5-20, so you should call ahead to find out what the charge is. Performances are held on a medium-sized stage on the main floor. Not much dancing happens here, though there is room for it, and acts tend to be of the strictly rock and roll variety. Big name acts are known to favor this club, including the Rolling Stones, as well as lesser-known virtuoso acts, such as the Magnetic Fields. If music is not your gig, head downstairs to the poolroom or hang out in the second-story seating area and sip beers while watching the crowd glide by. Review © 2007, Wcities |

As the name implies, this is a Hollywood themed operation, with movie memorabilia, posters and other decorations strewn around the casino and entrance pavilion. But who comes to look at that? As far as games go, the casino offers a decent two-deck blackjack game, but the dealers will shuffle up if they suspect you of counting, and they suspect everyone. You are probably better off fighting your way against the six-deck shoe, which has limits starting at $5 rather than the $10 at the two-deck tables. Slot payback rates are comparable with other casinos in the region, and tend to change depending on how the competition is doing. You can also play slots, Caribbean stud poker and press your luck in the "double down" video poker machines. The steak house is pretty good, but do not expect a complimentary meal from these guys, not even for the buffet. For entertainment, there is the casino-owned Paramount Arts Center across the Fox River. The casino is easily accessible by Metra train from Union Station in Chicago, but it is kind of a long ride, especially on the way back. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Where real die-hard blues fans go |
3420 West Armitage Avenue Chicago, IL 60647 United States +1 773 342 0452 http://www.rosaslounge.com/ tony@rosaslounge.com |
Chicago is well known as home to many blues greats, and, as a result, plenty of decent blues bars feature respectable music and good bands catering to tourists. But musicians who play at these tourist clubs, they go to Rosa's when they really want to hear the good stuff. A nondescript tavern room located four-five miles from Old Town and Lincoln Park, Rosa's offers the unbeatable combination of great music and cheap drinks. Although the crowd here is friendly, any musician who gets up to play at Rosa's knows that he or she better bring some serious chops to the table, because bad music simply isn't tolerated here. Coming to Rosa's is sure to soothe your soul. Review © 2007, Wcities |

At $7 a ticket, it is also the cheapest first-run house in town, so skip the multiplex monopoly and patronize this terrific, local business. Review © 2007, Wcities |
