Abbey Pub and Restaurant

The Irish have been immigrating to Chicago for over a hundred years and it seems that the current crop of immigrants have come to nest at this friendly, authentic Irish pub. Come for the pie, stay for the music. Yeah, that saying is supposed to go the other way around, but you can reverse it at the Abbey. Try the shepherd's pie and blood pudding if you wish, but stay for the live, Irish folk music and Guinness on tap. The restaurant also offers a catering service.

Beachwood Inn

+1 773 486 9806
One of the best kept secrets in Wicker Park, this cozy little pub is decorated with cult-kitsch movie posters from such successes as "The Toxic Avenger." Dick the bartender doesn't hear well, so speak up when you want a Beck's or he will bring you a Bass instead. The jukebox is surreal, and packed with 1980s compilations from New Wave to Pat Benatar. There is hardly ever a crowd, except when there is a gallery opening on nearby Milwaukee, and then there is only a moderate-sized art crowd that doesn't bother anybody.

A slightly under rated place to have a drink in Roscoe Village, the patrons here belong in the suburbs and act like they are just visiting the city for the night. The food here is a standard mini-pizza for $6 and when you are done, you can hoof it to the back room to watch a band play for a small or sometime not so small cover of between $3 and $8. But check the calendar because this place books every garage band in town. Pared down to its essentials, this is somewhere to go for inconspicuous crowd watching.

This place is like a college dorm gone public and stocked with plenty of booze. If you like buffalo wings and beer, you have found the right spot. Decorated with beer company posters and vintage video games, the atmosphere somehow manages to be homey. There is also a small stage surrounded by couches where there is sometimes live entertainment.

This is arguably one of the best medium-sized performance spaces in the city. The décor is collegiate and the drink prices are fair, with the low end leaning in at $2. There are pool tables and pinball machines in the front room, alongside thrift store couches. The main area is large and there is a dance floor. There are acts every night and any of the local celebrity bands can be seen there, alongside international acts on their way through town. Cover prices vary and weekends are always sure to see a crowd.

This is a first-rate organization. The restaurant is terrific, the lobby bar is winding and elegant and the mood is just right. The main dance area hosts terrific bands that ignite the feet of swing dancers young and old. Even though the atmosphere is swanky, the crowd is very sociable and informal. Make reservations for dinner a couple hours before the band goes on, and enjoy a great meal. The meal is not inexpensive - most meals with a drink and tip are around $65 per person. Make your way to the stage and prepare to strut your stuff to the likes of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy. It all makes for a truly great evening. Show times and cover charges vary. Call for information.

This longtime neighborhood tavern and retreat for local working class folk has become a focal point of the Chicago bar/pub scene, and was recently listed in Rolling Stone magazine as Best Of Chicago, and for good reason. This is one of the few bars in town that does not stick to one genre of music. Rather, it presents the best of jazz, rock, folk... basically anything as long as it's good. There's a certain rustic charm about the place, with a mounted deer head over the register, and a stuffed marlin in the adjacent Chinook Lounge. There are live acts every day of the week.

Much of the work is humorous. A tongue-in-cheek painting by David Badinger, entitled "Kara, Queen of Bucktown", shows Hughes naked on a throne, with a crown on her head, a cigarette in one hand and a drink in the other. Carl Virgo's oil paintings and collages are also regularly featured here.

While "Friends" star David Schwimmer is perhaps the most famous member of the theater company, no one in this troupe could be accused of riding on Schwimmer's coattails. The genesis for the company was a 1986 acting class at Northwestern University. There, seven students met to produce an adaptation of Andre Gregory and the Manhattan Theatre Project's "Alice!" Shortly after graduation in 1989, the students formed the company in 1989. Now, over 30 premieres, four Joseph Jefferson Awards and 26 Joseph Jefferson citations later, the theater is still going strong. Past productions included "The Idiot," "Metamorphosis" and "Her Name Was Danger." While the group's front office is located in the historic Athenaeum Theatre building, it currently has no permanent performance space (although a permanent space has been designated for construction). Instead, productions are staged at various locales throughout Chicago. Please call for schedule and locations.

Instead, you will find a good collection of beer and a wonderfully eclectic variety of live music on a stage in an adjoining room. You can drink at the bar for no extra charge, but to hear the music, you have to pay a cover fee (usually around $10). Both parts of the tavern, performance and bar areas, tend to host a mix of locals from the Lakeview neighborhood and others from throughout the city who have come to check out this week's jazz, rock or folk act.

If you get hungry, you can sneak away to the Harmony Grill, which is owned by the same person and attached to the bar.

Food served here is the type that Mom would make, if she were getting paid," and a decent place for bottled ales, including Himay Ale Red, Maudite Ale and Leffe Ale . Sandwiches come with tasty, crunchy tater tots. Typical menu selections are Grandma's Meatloaf, served with fresh green beans, mashed potatoes & Bell's Amber Ale gravy. Every Wednesday at 10p, sit in and listen to the Declan Jasper Trio perform live jazz.

Of the numerous Wicker Park address-name galleries, this one is by far the most original. It offers cutting-edge exhibits, such as the recent 'Emerge', showcasing the paintings and sculpture of up-and-coming artists like Brooke Churchhill, James Dean, John Gregg, Sean Hopp, Heather Hug and Garry Szumsky. The arrangement of the space is smart and appealing. You will feel compelled to browse awhile before making any snap judgment about the works and the space.

Cheap drinks and good music are the staples of this cozy concert venue and lounge located close to the vibrant North/Damen/Milwaukee intersection in Wicker Park. The tri-level bar features a first floor where rotating DJs play on weekends, a second level with a decent-sized stage for bands and an upstairs balcony that overlooks the stage area. There are bars on all levels of the dimly lit Subterranean selling beers and cocktails that fall in the $2 to $7 range. The House Theatre

A Theatrical Experience
3111, North Western Avenue
Chicago, IL 60618
United States
http://www.thehousetheatre.com/
A recent New York Times article that discussed Chicago theatre companies rightly highlighted this growing off-Loop (the Chicago equivalent of off-Broadway) company. Now finishing its fourth season, The House Theatre of Chicago has built a citywide reputation as a fearless fringe company with a self-aware style yet readily accessible. Much of the House Theatre mission is to involve the collaboration of the artistic process. As such House shows include singing, elaborate (yet tasteful) special effects, and many other elements that play to the best parts of the spectacle of theatre. If you plan on checking out something outside the world famous theatres (i.e. Steppenwolf and Goodman), the House Theatre is rapidly becoming a staple of the brilliant Chicago theatre scene. -Jordan Corson

Under the fury-pitch guidance of the indefatigable Beata Pilch, this theater runs 12 productions a year, with such notables as Edna St. Vincent Millay's play "Aria Da Capo" having made the stage. It can be a bit of a sweathouse in the warmer months, with no air conditioning, and, if you feel feverish, it is probably because of the knack for the experimental rather than your temperature.

One of the first to break the gentrification barrier into Bucktown, this gallery presents a neat and tidy surface of "emerging art" by local artists to greets you initially. While the gallery is great for finding art that will match your color scheme at home, it is not progressive in interpreting the current trends in modern art. Bring your Gold Card. Sellers can take advantage of the consignment arrangements at the attached antique mall.
