Chicago Pride Parade

Pride Procession
3712 North Broadway-PMB 544
Chicago, IL 60613
United States

The annual Pride Parade commemorates the Stonewall riots, and celebrates the beginning of the gay rights movement. Today, you are just as likely to see politicians, radio personalities and corporate sponsors march in the parade as you are to see drag queens, muscle boys and leather daddies. Many watching the parade seem oblivious to the political overtones of the event, though. For them, it is simply a chance to party, an opportunity to see the scene and be seen. A dance at the lakefront follows the parade.

Saint Patrick's Day Parade

Nation's largest neighborhood St. Patrick's Parade

Though usually held the Sunday before St. Patrick's Day, one day after the downtown parade, many residents consider this the city's real parade. Stretching down Columbus and Balbo Drives uptil Buckingham Fountain, the procession is not as infiltrated by politicians and displays a more authentic ethnic, neighborhood pride. In fact, this parade began spontaneously in 1979 when a neighborhood group pushed a baby carriage adorned with the Irish flag down the street. From these inauspicious roots, it has grown to become the nation's largest neighborhood St. Pat's Parade.

Venetian Night

Enchanted night of twinkling sailboats
Monroe Harbor
Chicago, IL
United States
For a magical evening on Lake Michigan, be sure not to miss this simple, yet haunting event. More than 35 boats sail out onto Lake Michigan in a formal parade of twinkling lights and music. The free parade can be viewed along the lakefront from the Shedd Aquarium at Roosevelt Road up to the Chicago Yacht Club at Monroe Street. Listen for the gorgeous sounds of the Grant Park Symphony before the parade, and watch for the fireworks at the evening's conclusion.
