The question was not whether General John Logan should have a memorial erected in his honor. Rather, the question was, "Which moment in his life should we honor?" He could be celebrated for his role as an Illinois congressman, or for his efforts to make Memorial Day a national holiday. Sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens chose, instead, to celebrate his heroism. He depicted General Logan seated on his horse holding the opposition's flag after going behind enemy lines to win a Civil War battle. This is one of several statues in Grant Park that are illuminated at night. Review © 2009, Wcities |
