Jerusalem Kosher Restaurant

A slice of Jewish life in Chicago
Pelikaanstraat 20-22
Chicago, IL 2018

Not too long ago, Chicago boasted a very large Jewish population. The first immigrants located on the Southwest side of town (Maxwell Street area), but as they assimilated and grew prosperous they continued to move. From the 1950s through the 1970s, West Devon Avenue was a thriving Jewish neighborhood. Today, it is largely populated by Middle-Eastern immigrants, but an enclave of mostly Orthodox Jews remain, and so does the Jerusalem Kosher Restaurant, a cafeteria-style restaurant that serves a variety of dishes, from pizza to eggplant Parmesan to falafel. The food isn't bad, but if you don't keep a kosher diet, come more for the experience, one that is increasingly hard to find.
