Oldest continuous congregation in Chicago |
1100 East Hyde Park Boulevard Chicago, IL 60615 +1 773 924 1234 http://www.kamii.org/ |
This Byzantine-inspired building houses the oldest Jewish congregation in Chicago, one that moved seven times before settling in this Hyde Park neighborhood. The building looks somewhat out of place in Chicago, as many associate Chicago Jews with Russian immigrants and European style churches. This temple reflects the religion's Middle Eastern roots, however. Inside, an impressive 80-foot high dome crowns the auditorium. This structure looks majestically down upon the beautifully crafted Italian ark, which contains the temple's Torah. Review © 2009, Wcities |
