The hotel's large indoor pool, outside sun deck, free parking, and desirable location near the Ontario Street restaurants makes it a great choice for families. Guests at this 45-room hotel get the chance to partake in genuine Chicago neighborhood life, away from the Loop. Built in the 1920s, the small hotel once catered to vaudevillian performers and Mafia gangsters. Today, it is a charming European-style hotel with pleasant rooms, good service, and reasonable rates. Its gastronomical neighbor, Ann Sather's Swedish restaurant, is known to offer complimentary cinnamon rolls, even via room service, for breakfast. The hotel's proximity to the Belmont El stop is certainly an advantage. Furthermore, it is just three miles North of the McCormick Place Convention Center, a 15-minute taxi ride away. In 1918, the Drake brothers' plans of setting up this chic restaurant fell through when they didn't get legal permission to do so. After a long 85 years, this dream was finally realised. One of the finest restaurants in the city, Drake Brothers offers guests a memorable dining experience. The American cuisine offers varieties, such as Escargots à la Bourguignon ($11), Ahi Tuna ($30) and Dry Aged New York Strip ($53). However, a meal here is incomplete without the Drake's Famous Crabcakes ($15). The wine list is just as impressive as the view. If you can afford this kind of luxury, go for it. Since 1920, this posh Chicago landmark has attracted the jet set and celebrity class with its regal 537 rooms, central location and unparalleled service. If the room rates put a scare to the pocketbook (although on weekends and in the off season you can get good deals), you can still enjoy wandering about the place checking out the beautiful marble and oak-paneled lobby. A large Romanesque fountain in the middle of this room reflects the Renaissance style conceived by Benjamin Marshall, who designed the hotel. It features similarly plush rooms. The executive level rooms and the suites feature excellent views of the city and Lake Michigan. Located in downtown, the Drake is a ten minute cab ride to the convention center. Charming hotel in the 1894 Reliance Building |
1 West Washington Chicago, IL 60602 +1 312 782 1111 / +1 877 294 9712 http://www.burnhamhotel.com |
Daniel Burnham designed this building, a harbinger to the modern day skyscraper, in 1894 with partners John Root and Charles Atwood. Burnham's oft-quoted slogan, "Make no small plans," most certainly applies to the hotel that now resides in the building and bears his name. What this small hotel lacks in size it more than makes up for in charm and grace. The terra-cotta facade positively gleams. Inside, the marble walls, mosaic tile floors and sculpted cast iron stairways are reminiscent of a more glamorous era. The guest rooms have an air of romance, with crushed velvet pillow shams and gauze-hung canopy beds. The hotel, with its 122 beautiful rooms, is perfect for both the business traveler looking for something different or for couples seeking a romantic getaway. If you're in Chicago on business you'll want to know that the Burnham is about a 12-minute taxi ride from the McCormick Place Convention Center. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Historic four-star hotel that's first class all the way |

This hotel was built in 1929 as the Medinah Athletic Club. Parts of its heritage remain, the most obvious example being the Roman-style swimming pool, which is open to the public. Johnny Weismuller, the Olympic swimmer who later became famous as Hollywood's version of Tarzan, trained at the original club. The landmark exterior adds additional charm and is a central skyscraper along the 'Magnificent Mile'. For truly royal treatment, opt for one of the suites. You just might mingle with the rich and famous. Run by the Inter-Continental Corporation, this first-rate establishment, with its 807 rooms (one of the largest in the Mid-West), will not disappoint, but be prepared to pay first-rate prices. For the business visitor to the Windy City, it's nice to know the Inter-Continental is about a 15-minute taxi trip to the McCormick Place Convention Center. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For a hotel of this caliber, you may be surprised to find that a few nights here, in one of their 285 fine rooms, could be within your budget. Built in 1926, this elegant, National Historic hotel has catered to Cary Grant, Richard Pryor, Shirley MacLaine and numerous other celebrities. A multi-million dollar restoration has returned this elegant landmark to its former glory. Now, a stylish art deco tower standing above Michigan Avenue welcomes guests. Once decaying and unpopular with tourists, the hotel has become one of the best and most popular places to stay in the city. While other hotels offer comparable rooms at lower rates, the Allerton offers an historical perspective that the other Michigan Avenue hotels lack. The 443 rooms feature dark accents and decor that looks straight out of an actual bedroom instead of a factory close out sale. Many of the rooms have balconies that offer stunning city views. If you can't afford a ticket to Italy, then head to Via Veneto instead. Named after a region in North Italy, it has been voted one of the city's top 10 restaurants by the Sun Times as well as the Tribune. The authentic Italian cuisine is simply delicious and includes items, such as Cappellini Bella Napoli ($10) and Vitello Parmigiano ($15). Stop by on a Monday and enjoy $1 martinis! Veneto will also ensure that your weddings, banquets and special occassions are really special. So stop by and dine in true Italian style. Buon Appetito! Review © 2007, Wcities |

W Hotel in Chicago's Loop is all that its name claims to be—warm, wonderful, witty and wired. From cozy rooms with state-of-the-art amenities to meeting rooms with the latest technological equipment, this hotel translates into an ideal destination for foreign travelers. Apart from housing an elegant restaurant, a chic bar and a fitness center, W is also close to a number of interesting spots in Chicago—the Sears Tower Skydeck, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Millennium Park and the Theater District. Packages are available for anyone on a luxury, moderate or economy budget. Service can get a bit slow at times, but would it really matter if you are on a break from the fast-pace routines? The hotel has expanded its room count from 257 to 369, yet it retains an intimate atmosphere. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Expensive tourist-class hotel |
909 North Michigan Avenue Chicago, IL 60611 +1 312 943 7200 http://www.starwoodhotels.com/... |
Located on the north end of the Magnificent Mile, and about a 20-minute taxi ride to the McCormick Place Convention Center, this is a large tourist-class hotel with 424 rooms and 28 suites. The hotel is well-known for housing visiting sports teams, but the staff frowns upon other guests' attempts to snap athletes' pictures. Guests are better advised to find their entertainment at the nearby Oak Street Beach, Hancock Observatory, The 900 North Michigan Shops and Water Tower Place. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The four-star Westin River North Chicago, once a Hotel Nikko enterprise, retains but a spark of its original Japanese flair. Rooms are spacious and modern and really are not all that special for the price until you sit down on the bed. The famous pillow top beds might make it extremely hard to wake up in the morning. Located on the Chicago River, the luxurious hotel is near the Merchandise Mart, Magnificent Mile, Loop, House of Blues, and Chicago's theater district. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Beautiful bed and breakfast |
2020 South Calumet Avenue Chicago, IL 60616 +1 312 945 2020 http://www.wheelermansion.com mail@wheelermansion.com |
This historic South Loop mansion was designed and built in 1870 by Otis L. Wheelock for Calvin Wheeler, the former president of the Chicago Board of Trade. The current owners, Scott and Debra Seger, struggled to refurbish the red brick Italianate building, but managed to transform the old building into an 11 room boutique hotel. Guests are treated with extravagances befitting royalty. Beds are filled with goose down, and the meals, prepared by British chef Denise Renalds, are served on bone China. The Segers imported all of the furniture from Europe. They restored every inch of the building's interior, including the Minton-Hollins tiles on the floors of the guest bathrooms. This is, pound for pound, one of the nicest places to stay in all of Chicago, making it a good idea to book reservations well in advance of your visit to the Windy City. Review © 2007, Wcities |
Hotel with history |
105 East Delaware Place Chicago, IL 60611 +1 312 944 6300 http://www.thewhitehallhotel.com/ |
Originally built in 1928, the Whitehall was recently restored to its original grandeur. It now provides a perfect combination of historic elegance and modern luxury. The 221 rooms feature traditional 18th century English-style furnishings and have spectacular views. There is a wealth of options to suit most budgets from the unbridled opulence of the Delaware and Pinnacle Suites to the more affordable, but no less affluent Superior Suites. It is conveniently located in the Gold Coast, near the Magnificent Mile, Water Tower Place and the lakefront. Moreover, the McCormick Place Convention Center is just a 15-minute cab drive away. Quiet neighborhood hotel |
555 West Surf Street Chicago, IL 60657 +1 773 528 8400 / +1 800 787 3108 http://www.cityinns.com willows@cityinns.com |
Of the three hotels run by Neighborhood Inns, this one is by far the preferred choice. The sophisticated lobby, with its roaring fireplace, reflects the hotel's 1920s French heritage, and so do the elegant rooms. The location matches the hotel's charm. The tree-lined, residential street is the perfect place to call home during your stay in the Windy City. Lincoln Park, the Chicago Historical Society, and dozens of restaurants are all within walking distance. Review © 2007, Wcities |
Top rate hotel catering to business travelers |
633 N St. Clair Street Chicago, IL 60611 +1 312 573 0300 http://www.wyndhamchicagohotel... |
Located right off Michigan Avenue, this hotel is a business traveler's paradise. The goal here is time conservation. Controls on the television adjust the room's lighting and temperature. Amenities include a hair dryer, ironing board and iron, coffeemaker, CD player and T1 Internet connection in each room. A work center, featuring online computers, fax machines, a laser printer and a copier, is on the premises. Of course, all of this does not come cheap, so expect to flex those corporate credit cards.
