If you've never tried tapas before (or if you're already a fan), then 1492 is the place for you. Located in an unassuming greystone building, this multi-story restaurant is a great place to meet with colleagues or friends after a long day of work or play. Their extensive tapas menu includes a wide-range of hot and cold dishes in small portions that are meant to be shared with friends. (You'll also want to order a pitcher or two of sangria to share as well). While many dishes include meat, there are plenty of meat-free options available for the vegetarians at your table. For those who arrive with a heartier appetite, a number of Spanish and Latin American entrees including a traditional paella are also featured on the menu. -Susan Berg

The Irish have been immigrating to Chicago for over a hundred years and it seems that the current crop of immigrants have come to nest at this friendly, authentic Irish pub. Come for the pie, stay for the music. Yeah, that saying is supposed to go the other way around, but you can reverse it at the Abbey. Try the shepherd's pie and blood pudding if you wish, but stay for the live, Irish folk music and Guinness on tap. The restaurant also offers a catering service.

Monday nights hop at Andy's when the Chuck Hedges "Swingtet" begins to play classic Benny Goodman style swing. On the weekends, you can catch nationally known acts such as Brad Goode. Lunch sets are offered, as well, making this place especially popular with nearby business people. You can grab a decent meal, too, but nothing fancy. This is strictly a burger and pizza kind of joint, which fits in well with the dark, smoky interior.

One of the best kept secrets in Wicker Park, this cozy little pub is decorated with cult-kitsch movie posters from such successes as "The Toxic Avenger." Dick the bartender doesn't hear well, so speak up when you want a Beck's or he will bring you a Bass instead. The jukebox is surreal, and packed with 1980s compilations from New Wave to Pat Benatar. There is hardly ever a crowd, except when there is a gallery opening on nearby Milwaukee, and then there is only a moderate-sized art crowd that doesn't bother anybody.

A slightly under rated place to have a drink in Roscoe Village, the patrons here belong in the suburbs and act like they are just visiting the city for the night. The food here is a standard mini-pizza for $6 and when you are done, you can hoof it to the back room to watch a band play for a small or sometime not so small cover of between $3 and $8. But check the calendar because this place books every garage band in town. Pared down to its essentials, this is somewhere to go for inconspicuous crowd watching.

Step into The Berghoff and step back in time. This 1895 gem of a restaurant weathered the years and is still a much-loved favorite for locals and tourists alike, for many reasons. The food is as sumptuous as the Old World surroundings. Wiener Schnitzel, Sauerbraten, homemade rye bread and its own specialty brews have made the restaurant an institution. Stop by the traditional stand-up bar before dinner for a drink, or crowd in during lunch with local business people to throw back a cold one and a corned beef sandwich. This gay tavern has a "neighborhood bar" feel that lacks the bells and whistles of the trendier Halsted Street gay bars. For many of the bar's clientele, that is a selling point, not a hindrance. Also popular are the 50-cent midnight shots on the weekends and free Sunday dinners. On weeknights, Big Chicks is popular with the after-work crowd, where regulars saddle-up to the bar and have a pleasant chat with the bartenders. The place is packed during the weekends, so it is easy to find entertainment in the crowds.

Full of young hipsters, this bar used to be the place to be for those Vertigo fans. However, if you're having trouble recognizing the place, thats because it has recently been remodeled and features an entirely new space (that is, if you've never been to Lava Lounge on Damon Avenue.) There's no food here, so make sure you grab something before your night of drinking. If you need a snack, there's some peanuts and chips if you ask the bartender. They are the ones that run the music too, so if you have something in mind just give them a shout.

This hip American joint is the perfect place to leave troubles behind and unwind. The razzmatazz-splashed interiors, interesting lighting, and contemporary menu makes sure the place is crowded. Chef Blackmon's splendid food creations melt in the mouth and the house beverages are uplifting. Additionally, jazz performances and DJs are a regular feature. Hard to believe seafood in the Midwest could be this fresh, but taste any of the 12 different varieties of raw oysters flown in daily from the Pacific and North Atlantic oceans, or the seafood-based appetizers like baked clams and crab cakes, you will be converted. The kitchen offers an ever-changing menu of seafood prepared inventively and wonderfully with European and/or Asian influences. In addition to the great seafood, the bar features specialty vodkas and great martinis. Bluepoint is located in the hip market district, and the decor and people are chic and sleek. Border Line Tap

Popular neighborhood tavern
1958 West North Avenue
Chicago, IL 60622

+1 773 278 5138
This popular neighborhood tavern is one of the busiest bars in Wicker Park. If you arrive here after 11p, you will not find a seat anywhere, not even in the oft fought-over window sills. The preferred drink here is beer by the pint and this bar has all of the standards with the pick of the litter being Red Hook at $3.50. The bartenders and waitresses ooze attitude and so does the crowd. At the cross-hairs of the North-Damen-Milwaukee intersection, this bar is the favorite of area professionals for meat-market debauchery. The bathrooms, if you can step over enough people to get to them, unfailingly reflect that philosophy.

Even though there is a location in California, Brick's is one of a kind. A key concept at Bricks is mixing. Whether it be the integration of hot peppers and pesto into thin crust pizza or the more traditional melding of beer with pizza, this basement-set Lincoln Park stop is at once a perfect alternative to typical Chicago style pizza and a much better place to grab a libation than many of the overcrowded, noise polluted bars in the area. On various days of the week at Bricks there are enticing discounts on beers and wines such as half off all bottles of wine on Tuesdays or half off the classic Fat Tire Ale on Tuesdays. Where else can you buy a hot dog, walk over to an adjacent bar and get a cold beer to wash it down? This is a dank, dingy hot dog and burger joint with an attached bar that is right out of a Bukowski story. Somehow, Clark Street Dog has escaped the gentrification of the neighborhood and remains a testament to the area's seedier past. And you know what? People love it. It also happens that the hot dogs, and especially the signature Philly steaks, are really good. It may look scary from the outside, but do not be afraid.

Cleo's Bar and Grill

West Side oasis

Cleo's is a great neighborhood bar with friendly bartenders, a choice selection of single-malt scotches and whiskeys and a respectable lineup of beers on tap. The customers are friendly and sociable, although conversation dies down noticeably during the feeding frenzy that follows the arrival of the food. This is because the food here is a noticeably above good pub grub, and the different daily specials are a steal. Check out the chicken wings, outstanding chili and interesting pizzas. On Mondays, the bartender turns off the jukebox and turns Cleo's into a jazz lover's haven, spinning tracks by Bird, Diz, Bill Evans and their friends.

Climax Lounge is dissected into several rooms, one housing a tree in the center, while another has a vaulted ceiling and a disco ball. The decor is dark; a very sleek goth and Renaissance-revival motif runs through out the nightclub. Gargoyles and stone arches are key ingredients in creating the nightspot's atmosphere. The music is a blend of Euro, Trans and Electro. The crowd is young and swanky, fitting for this club whose bathroom attendant wears a tux.

Club Lucky has become a tradition for many Chicagoans. Diners can enjoy their meals in the dining room or in the red booths that litter the authentic cocktail lounge. The bar area replicates the lounge that stood in the same location in 1938. Club Lucky's biggest draw is the heaping portions of Sicilian cuisine, including homemade pastas, and giant slabs of succulent steak and ribs. Or, just stop by after work for a 'killer martini' with hand-stuffed olives.

This retro-chic gay bar has a good selection of microbrews, exposed brick and all the joy that a night out in Boys Town can bring. The front room is fashioned for cocktails and conversation, while in the back, dancers pack it in to dance for celebrity DJs. On Monday nights, there is usually a lesbian crowd. Tuesdays, the bar offers a martini menu, while the weekends are all about the dance scene. On Sundays, giant Bloody Marys are on special.

Tucked inside the Drake Hotel, this is one of the city's most elegant bars. It is not hard to believe that this dimly lit bar with its Old World charm dates back to the early 1930s. Order up a martini, find a cozy table and bask in the swank of this experience. The menu features limited seafood selections, including a rich, flavorful clam chowder that is particularly satisfying on a cold day.

If the frantic pace and atmosphere of the nearby places in Greektown intimidate you, try this more casual, relaxed spot. Live piano music tinkles away as you sit in a very comfortable dining room and are waited on by a very friendly staff. Specialties include stuffed calamari and Athenian chicken; besides the traditional Greek fare, there are also a variety of fresh seafood, chops and steaks to choose from. Costa's is more sophisticated than most of the Greektown restaurants, and slightly higher prices reflect this.

Not quite like the famous New York club it is named after, but this is still a fine jazz club in its own right. White walls, a gleaming grand piano, tuxedoed servers, silver mirrors - this is a class act with classy acts. Art Porter and Cassandra Wilson are just two of the big names who often perform here. The back room is a separate club unto itself that offers disco dancing, and, on Monday nights, the open microphone draws in a large and boisterous crowd. Admission is $10.

This bar/saloon is a place for drinks and entertainment a la Coyote Ugly—the movie. Beautiful girls tend to customers at the bar and dance on the counter. The perennially crowded bar is always buzzing with brawls, wild partying and music. Bar food is satisfactory and priced reasonably. The saloon is also known as the best place for bachelor/bachelorette parties. So if you want to get rowdy, loud, shameless, or plain wasted, let Coyote Ugly assist you.

Crew Bar + Grill is Uptown's sports themed gay bar, a neighborhood favorite that attracts the gay and straight crowd alike. During the day and early evening, sports commands the most attention in the bar. Yet, as the night goes on, the bar becomes a bit more musica, with the VJ playing an eclectic mix of music videos. While the bottled beer list is expansive with over 40 brews, the drink of choice at Crew Bar + Grill is the "Berengaria" -- a beer, tequila, and margarita mix.

Upscale drinking and ambiance. If you're driving, you might want to consider taking a taxi. This place gets pretty packed on the weekends so it can be hard to find a parking space. Valet is also on hand if you get too frustrated. Don't worry about drinking too much, the bar is located in the Hotel Sax if you need a place to crash.

This "alternative" club is housed in a bleak-looking warehouse, with a bleak interior that matches quite well with the outside. The dark interior features a guillotine and music that no one outside of Crobar's domain will hear on the radio for at least a year. The music played is progressive and fresh, but it is extremely difficult to get in to listen to it. More than half the people who show up are turned away at the door, unless you happen to be gay and have brought your lover along with you. Straight people are welcome - just don't show up dressed in khakis.

Cru is a big surprise because it is situated around the corner from a plethora of collegiate frat-boy bars and clubs that cater to a more boisterous and loud clientele. Yet Cru offers a quieter, comfortable atmosphere that feels like a lounge without the cheesy retro feel. Instead, the zebra wood bar and quietly eclectic fusion, jazz and bossa nova tunes provide an ideal setting for conversation and savoring your drink. Cru features 400 wines, a small but select variety of single-malt scotches, bourbons, sherries and cognacs and a light menu featuring crisp, fresh and flavorful European café fare that takes the edge off without weighing you down. Especially worth a try are the excellent beef carpaccio and the fine selection of cheeses.

What to say about this raucous, noisy, Wrigleyville institution? How about this: squeeze your way in after a Cubs game and join fellow fans as they whine about how God-awful-rotten the team is. If you do not like sports, stop by on the weekend when the place is even more packed with people jumping up and down to the sound of live rock music. Cubby Bear is huge. It is noisy. It is like a college bar on speed. It is multi-leveled and filled to the brim with beer. And it is here to stay.

This is quite possibly the best and the most authentic Irish pub in the city of Chicago. Recent immigrants from the Emerald Isle flock here for the carefully poured Guinness and the homey charm. You do not have to be Irish to appreciate the antique bar, the friendly atmosphere and the array of wonderful soups and sandwiches on the menu. Cullen's is an especially nice place for a before- or after-theater drink, as the Mercury Theatre is right next door.

Located in the heart of the River North, Cyrano's is one of Chicago's finest offerings. Styled like a typical Parisian bistro, a meal here would definitely transport you to the city of lights. Chef and owner Didier Durand has taken great care in selecting the exquisite food and wine menus. Dunard famously spoke out against the foie gras, by saying that you may not find it your check but you'll find $16 potatoes. Enjoy a grand five-course meal with items, such as Chilled Lobsters, Baked Frog Legs with Garlic and Crumbs, Smoked Duck, and Israeli Couscous - perhaps you'll discover some other $16 worthy treat in one of your dishes. And to complete the French tradition, there's an assortment of desserts and cheese to choose from. A live band, cabaret performances and comedy shows while you dine ensure that you return to Cyrano's over and over again.

A James Beard award winner prepares your food here; Douglas Rodriguez creates some Latin culinary wonders that you sure wouldn't want to miss. Start out with the ceviche sampler or tacos for appetizers and then go on to the main course. Although the food has received mixed reviews, it's the drinks which keep the guests coming in. De La Costa mainly attracts the chic and trendy crowds because it's "the place" to be. The ambiance is quite appealing and has quite a unique finish. Groove to the beats, as the DJ spins out the latest and popular tracks, but get ready to shell out a bomb when the bill arrives.

New look and feel
1951 West Dickens Avenue
Chicago, IL 60614

+1 773 489 6457
Originally a house, this one-time staple of college patrons across the city has refurbished for a decidedly 1980s feel. The change has not affected the midnight clientele, but the atmosphere is new. The upstairs area where you could sit with a pint of beer in somebody's living room and wander through the kitchen or out onto the balcony simply are not accessible anymore. But there are still plenty of side rooms where you can hide from the main body of the crowd. The place is infamous as a pick-up joint, but the Sergio feel of the bar speaks volumes about the costs of taking lovejoy too far. Drink prices are reasonable.

Mike Miller has possibly created the most fun, eclectic bar in town. Five nights a week, a different DJ spins a different style of music. Typically, Monday is punk, Tuesday features a guest DJ, Wednesday is country/western, and Sunday is lounge. Sunday is especially memorable, as the lounge music is classic Sinatra and Sammy Davis recordings. As you dig on the sounds, you can choose from one of the city's largest selection of liquors, both fine and, for the less well off, not so fine. There are over 300 liquors to choose from, as well as over 75 beers. Upstairs, there is a smaller bar with games and a pool table.

This nightclub is the coolest and hippest in the Chicago nightclub scene, and it tries to accomplish that by targeting a young and above-average income crowd. Everything is expensive, including the stiff $10 cover. If you can spend more, you will have more fun here. The place is all chinoiseries and loud music, a three-level ancient Asian temple becomes a dance club and the dazzle is enough to conjure a few celebrities amid the crowd on the busy main floor, or upstairs in the VIP room. It also boasts a sushi/sake bar, offering several types of sushi rolls, including California (crab, avocado, cucumber) and spicy ebi roll (rice, seaweed, sesame seeds, shrimp, cucumber, avocado, spicy sauce) among others. Women can get libations in the Dragon Lady Lounge/bathroom.

Sit down at the comfortable bar and order yourself up a McEwans or any number of other Scottish and British beers and ales. If beer is not to your liking, you can choose from pages and pages of listed single and double malt whiskeys, ranging in price from a few bucks, all the way up to $100 a shot. This restaurant arguably has the best selection of whiskeys in the country, making it a must for the connoisseur. If your taste buds are a bit more plebeian, go on a Wednesday or Friday. The $7.95 all-you-can-eat fish 'n' chips is a great deal. The summer months are especially pleasant in the backyard patio, but no matter where you sit, you may have to wait for a table.

One of several Dunlays restaurants, the aptly named Dunlays on the Square is a diverse though not exactly eclectic bar and grill on the corner of Logan Square. At Dunlays one can expect well-made drinks, hearty soups, and lots of sandwiches. However, don't come to Dunlays looking for an exquisite dining experience. Probably the best way to think of this restaurant is as a classier, friendlier, and slightly tastier Chiles or Applebees. The inviting and laid back atmosphere at Dunlays makes it a perfect place for either a quiet weekend brunch or a great place to watch football. -Jordan Corson
