Get on the line at this unusual sports bar |
69 East 75th Street Chicago, IL 60619-1646 United States +1 773 846 0005 |
This is a sports bar, but not exclusively so. Jeans, gym shoes and skull caps are banned after 9pm, and people hit the dance floor for step dancing, a contemporary dance popular with the clientele. If you are not into the dancing, you may want to sit back and observe the action from the skybox. But, if you are only here to watch the game, this bar will not disappoint. The five television sets are always tuned to the event of the day. You can sample from a menu that includes Chicken Wings, Perch and Popcorn Shrimp. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Irish pub and grub with live music |

The Irish have been immigrating to Chicago for over a hundred years and it seems that the current crop of immigrants have come to nest at this friendly, authentic Irish pub. Come for the pie, stay for the music. Yeah, that saying is supposed to go the other way around, but you can reverse it at the Abbey. Try the shepherd's pie and blood pudding if you wish, but stay for the live, Irish folk music and Guinness on tap. The restaurant also offers a catering service. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Monday nights hop at Andy's when the Chuck Hedges "Swingtet" begins to play classic Benny Goodman style swing. On the weekends, you can catch nationally known acts such as Brad Goode. Lunch sets are offered, as well, making this place especially popular with nearby business people. You can grab a decent meal, too, but nothing fancy. This is strictly a burger and pizza kind of joint, which fits in well with the dark, smoky interior. USD23. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This comfortable lounge nestled in the south end of Boystown is an ideal setting for a laid-back evening watching sporting events, or for a first date over decently priced martinis. The bar features two rooms, plenty of seating and one long, well stocked bar. Drink specials include $5 frozen cocktails on Fridays, $2 domestic bottles on Tuesdays and $3.50 Bloody Marys on Sundays. This warm nightspot attracts a young but diverse crowd, and it is easy to see why. The bartenders and waitresses are friendly; the bar is stocked with good microbrews, single malts and small batch bourbons; and the kitchen stays open late. The food at Bar Louie is satisfying, especially late at night. Portions are large enough to share, and the sandwiches are especially outstanding. The greatest dive in Wicker Park |
1415 North Wood St Chicago, IL 60622 United States +1 773 486 9806 |
One of the best kept secrets in Wicker Park, this cozy little pub is decorated with cult-kitsch movie posters from such successes as "The Toxic Avenger." Dick the bartender doesn't hear well, so speak up when you want a Beck's or he will bring you a Bass instead. The jukebox is surreal, and packed with 1980s compilations from New Wave to Pat Benatar. There is hardly ever a crowd, except when there is a gallery opening on nearby Milwaukee, and then there is only a moderate-sized art crowd that doesn't bother anybody. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Whether you want to dance, dine or just listen to blues, this nightclub fits the bill. Built on three levels, it has hosted the sounds of such musicians as Koko Taylor, Otis Rush, Son Seals, Magic Slim, Lonnie Brooks, Sugar Blue and Mighty Joe Young. The dinner menu is replete with mouth-watering specialties, including chicken masala for $13.95, braised baby back ribs for $15.95 and grilled salmon Angelique for $18.95. The average cost for meals is $12-16, though you will definitely spend more if you want cocktails. If you are interested in booking a private party, groups of up to 250 persons can be accommodated. Pizza, beer, live music |
2100 W Belmont Ave Chicago, IL 60618 United States +1 773 281 4444 http://www.beatkitchen.com |
A slightly under rated place to have a drink in Roscoe Village, the patrons here belong in the suburbs and act like they are just visiting the city for the night. The food here is a standard mini-pizza for $6 and when you are done, you can hoof it to the back room to watch a band play for a small or sometime not so small cover of between $3 and $8. But check the calendar because this place books every garage band in town. Pared down to its essentials, this is somewhere to go for inconspicuous crowd watching. Review © 2007, Wcities |

With over 85 beers offered, the real beer drinker wouldn't care how the bar looked. Luckily, the owners did, creating a homey, pub-like feel with a vaulted ceiling and a mahogany back bar. The beer menu features everything imaginable, from the favorite standards like Guinness to the unusual like Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA and everything in between. This family-owned restaurant west of downtown has charm and integrity. Come hungry - the pasta portions are unbelievable; you can ask for a half order and still have food for the next few days. Bella Notte serves everything from Chicken Vesuvio to Zuppa de Pesce over Capellini. It has a charming, old-world feel with a wonderful mix of clientele and more than a hint of old Chicago when Al Capone was in charge. No Italian restaurant would be complete without a respectable wine list, and Bella Notte is no exception. Regulars are here for the jukebox, the dartboard, a game of cricket and, of course, the liquor. This is one of the few places in the city that gets cozier as the temperature drops. The risk of frostbite on the journey there is outweighed by the prospect of warming up next to the hearth of one of the few working bar fireplaces in the city. Descend the murky stairs and "Butt on in" as the sign says. Made famous by John Belushi's Saturday Night Live "Cheeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger" skit, this joint never fails to please in all of its sleazy glory. For a truly authentic experience, enter late when all the tourists have left. Check out the old Mike Royko columns and photographs on the walls. You can order breakfast until 11a and after that you can order a hot dog, a ham and cheese or a cheeseburger, but you cannot order fries - only chips. Try the "Doublacheez" for a wallop. As hard as it tries not to be one of the pretentious Wicker Park bars, this place really cannot help but feel extremely cool about itself. Abounding with middle class posturing, the joint is a wannabe pick-up place, with all the fixings except for actual pick-ups. In addition to the main bar area, patrons can relax in one of the lounge chairs in the TV room. Full of young hipsters, this bar used to be the place to be for those Vertigo fans. However, if you're having trouble recognizing the place, thats because it has recently been remodeled and features an entirely new space (that is, if you've never been to Lava Lounge on Damon Avenue.) Popular neighborhood tavern |

This popular neighborhood tavern is one of the busiest bars in Wicker Park. If you arrive here after 11p, you will not find a seat anywhere, not even in the oft fought-over window sills. The preferred drink here is beer by the pint and this bar has all of the standards with the pick of the litter being Red Hook at $3.50. The bartenders and waitresses ooze attitude and so does the crowd. At the cross-hairs of the North-Damen-Milwaukee intersection, this bar is the favorite of area professionals for meat-market debauchery. Even though there is a location in California, Brick's is one of a kind. A key concept at Bricks is mixing. Whether it be the integration of hot peppers and pesto into thin crust pizza or the more traditional melding of beer with pizza, this basement-set Lincoln Park stop is at once a perfect alternative to typical Chicago style pizza and a much better place to grab a libation than many of the overcrowded, noise polluted bars in the area. The stockyards may have gone away, but another kind of meat market has taken shape in Chicago. Although the strip of Division surrounding this bar is well known as a singles' Mecca, Butch McGuire's may be king of them all. Comfortable, warm Irish pub |

Kitschy ramblings about shamrocks and blarney stones do not apply here - this is not that kind of Irish pub. Instead, Celtic Crossings is a warm, comfortable place you imagine entering from a rainy, chilly Irish afternoon to tuck away a pint of good Guinness beer while catching up with your mates. While friendly, the bartender will not tolerate drunken frat-boy antics. Dark wooden trim, pews all around and Irish beer and whiskey are emphasized here. The only concession to Americans is the small selection of decent cigars available. Live Celtic music is played on Sunday afternoons. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Come to Chalkboard for some authentic American cuisine. Don't let the plain interiors and down-to-earth vibe fool you. In spite of being simple, the place has managed to gather quite a few faithful customers. The white décor and the generous portions assure you that you are up for a pleasant evening. Drink, DON'T Smoke Here |
2076, North Hoyne Avenue Chicago, IL 60647 United States +1 773 489 4757 |
To the dismay of many, Chicago bars still allow smoking. Fortunately for those hoping to escape the haziness that inhabits most pubs in the city, the Charleston is a haven for anyone seeking freedom from smoke filled pubs. Go to the Charleston on a Saturday night. As far as the weekend bar scene goes, the Charleston is lively, but still manageable. They have all the elements of a typical bar experience on a weekend. There's a pool table, an amateur band, and even friendly bartenders. Though mostly populated by artsy hipsters, the Charleston is notably unpretentious (not that most arty hipsters are…). Here is a good neighborhood bar that, with distinct aspects (i.e. non-smoking) blended with a homey feel, establishes it as a staple of Chicago's bar scene. -Jordan Corson Review © 2007, Wcities |

Besides quality billiards, this place also has a dining area with a capacity of thirty and also a bar which can accommodate approximately twelve to thirteen people. An outdoor beer garden also plays host to a couple of indoor games such as darts and pool among others, which attracts a lot of regulars. Philly steak, beer and a dank atmosphere |

Where else can you buy a hot dog, walk over to an adjacent bar and get a cold beer to wash it down? This is a dank, dingy hot dog and burger joint with an attached bar that is right out of a Bukowski story. Somehow, Clark Street Dog has escaped the gentrification of the neighborhood and remains a testament to the area's seedier past. And you know what? People love it. It also happens that the hot dogs, and especially the signature Philly steaks, are really good. It may look scary from the outside, but do not be afraid. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cleo's is a great neighborhood bar with friendly bartenders, a choice selection of single-malt scotches and whiskeys and a respectable lineup of beers on tap. The customers are friendly and sociable, although conversation dies down noticeably during the feeding frenzy that follows the arrival of the food. This is because the food here is a noticeably above good pub grub, and the different daily specials are a steal. Check out the chicken wings, outstanding chili and interesting pizzas. On Mondays, the bartender turns off the jukebox and turns Cleo's into a jazz lover's haven, spinning tracks by Bird, Diz, Bill Evans and their friends. Review © 2007, Wcities |

New look and feel |

Originally a house, this one-time staple of college patrons across the city has refurbished for a decidedly 1980s feel. The change has not affected the midnight clientele, but the atmosphere is new. The upstairs area where you could sit with a pint of beer in somebody's living room and wander through the kitchen or out onto the balcony simply are not accessible anymore. But there are still plenty of side rooms where you can hide from the main body of the crowd. Authentic rock and roll venue |
1572 North Milwaukee Avenue Chicago, IL 60622 United States +1 773 489 3160 http://www.doubledoor.com/ |
This is perhaps the most authentic rock and roll venue in Chicago. The cover usually ranges anywhere from $5-20, so you should call ahead to find out what the charge is. Performances are held on a medium-sized stage on the main floor. Not much dancing happens here, though there is room for it, and acts tend to be of the strictly rock and roll variety. Big name acts are known to favor this club, including the Rolling Stones, as well as lesser-known virtuoso acts, such as the Magnetic Fields. If music is not your gig, head downstairs to the poolroom or hang out in the second-story seating area and sip beers while watching the crowd glide by. Review © 2007, Wcities |

If beer is not to your liking, you can choose from pages and pages of listed single and double malt whiskeys, ranging in price from a few bucks, all the way up to $100 a shot. This restaurant arguably has the best selection of whiskeys in the country, making it a must for the connoisseur. If your taste buds are a bit more plebeian, go on a Wednesday or Friday. The owner is a Frank Sinatra aficionado, and the walls are home to Sinatra memorabilia. The jukebox is packed with songs from Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis, Jr., along with some more modern songs as a concession to those not hip enough to swing a little. Review © 2007, Wcities |

955 West Fulton Market, No. 312 Chicago, IL 60607 United States +312 942 9500 http://www.fultonlounge.com/ |
Fulton Lounge is like no other place in the city to relax with friends, meet new ones, and sip on a cocktail. This modern loft-like lounge contains a patent leather bar, cozy swivel chairs and sofas, a fireplace used during those cold winters, and a 45-seat patio perfect for a beautiful spring or summer day. Fulton Lounge features a variety of wine, champagne, beers, and cocktails. If hungry, order a tasty pizza baked in a wood-burning oven from the neighboring restaurant, Follia. Gallery and performances |
2020 North Oakley Avenue Chicago, IL 60647 United States +1 773 489 5471 http://www.gallerycabaret.com/ |
This is a cushy, though somewhat narrow, Bucktown neighborhood bar and art gallery. Bands perform here several nights a week. Local celebrity blues acts and lounge pianists Ben & Pepper regularly make appearances, and Pepper's art also frequently adorns the walls. Gallery Cabaret has a good selection of beer, though be forewarned - prices are more expensive on weekends. You can also order pizza, if hunger calls. Admission varies. Review © 2007, Wcities |

No ghost here |
440 West Randolph Street Nine Restaurant Chicago, IL 60606 United States +1 312 575 9900 http://www.n9ne.com/ghostbar.asp |
If you need a stiff drink, what better place to get it than at Ghost Bar? It is a fabulous addition to the trendy and popular upscale restaurant Nine. Get over here and mingle with the mostly uber-chic crowd and Hollywood celebs who drop in sometimes. The DJ mainly plays dance music but get a heady dose of hip-hop, R&B and soul too. The bar reeks of sophistication and strong perfume. Private parties take precedence, but otherwise Ghost Bar is a fun place to unwind with the tabloid crowd. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Popular neighborhood hangout |
3740 North Clark Street Chicago, IL 60657 United States +1 773 549 2050 |
If you want to find a watering hole after a Cubs game, but don't want to deal with the usual sports bar crowd, head on over to this great neighborhood watering hole. Long a favorite with Wrigleyville residents, this bar has acquired a loyal following throughout the North Side. The beer selection is great, the atmosphere is congenial, the back room has pool tables, and the blues on the jukebox is tops. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fun neighborhood pub |
2158 North Halsted Street Chicago, IL 60614 United States +1 773 281 1205 |
Occasionally live musical acts perform here: Italian crooners belting out Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin standards are typical. A restaurant is connected to the bar, so you can bring your food back to the bar to eat, drink and enjoy the music. The vintage bar has carved wood decorations throughout. The place is nothing too glamorous, but that is the way many locals trying to stay away from the meat-market joints along Halsted like it. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Where the Locals Roam |
1934, West Irving Park Road Chicago, IL 60613 United States +1 773 871 3757 |
The Globe Pub, way up on Irving Park Rd. (twenty minutes north of downtown), may offer trivia Tuesdays and 80's music Fridays, but the best day to enjoy this North Side bar is on a Sunday. Many locals spend the waning hours of their weekend at The Globe, watching soccer games, Bears games, or just talking over drinks in a corner. Living up to its name, The Globe brings in an eclectic group ranging from working class residents from the Rogers Park neighborhood to Lincoln Park yuppies. Even during Bears playoff games there is space to move around in the accommodating two roomed bar. -Jordan Corson Review © 2007, Wcities |

Wicker Park Street |
1755 West Division Street Chicago, IL 60622 United States +1 773 227 8700 |
This is a shot and a beer bar. Local art hangs on the wall, but make no mistake, this is a dive bar. But that's exactly what makes it a secret hangout for all of the Wicker Park artist-types who want to keep it to themselves. So far, the artists have been doing a pretty good job of it. Old Style in a bottle is the standard drink of the bar. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Homemade beers and ales that pack a punch |
1800 North Clybourn Avenue Chicago, IL 60614 United States +1 312 915 0071 http://www.gooseisland.com/cly... |
Situated on "Goose Island" in the Chicago River, this micro-brewery/restaurant has made its way into the hearts of Chicagoans and has become something of an institution. This is for good reason. Although Goose Island Brewery serves good food, it is best known for a terrific selection of beers and ales. If you want to try something really special, order a bourbon stout. It is rich and creamy with a hint of chocolate. Be forewarned, these brews pull no punches. You will have to wait for a table if you are planning on staying for a meal, even on weekdays. If you are just coming for a drink, you can usually squeeze your way into the bar. Another location has opened in Wrigleyville at 3535 North Clark Street, +1 773 832 9040. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mercy me |
2438 North Lincoln Avenue Chicago, IL 60614 United States +1 773 477 8880 http://www.thegramercy.com/ |
Filling in the shoes of Lounge Ax, the Gramercy has successfully integrated itself in the Chicago lounge scene. The place is swanky and offers secluded booths, two bars, plenty of cocktails and decent pub grub. On any day, catch singles and after-work folk hanging out at the counters with martinis and tapas. Piano Lounge Feel |
950, W. Wrightwood Avenue Chicago, IL 60614 United States +1 773 832 4000 http://www.grandcentralchicago... |
The Grand Central aims for class, and with its spacious brick interior, clusters of round, candlelit 3-4 person tables and "eat well, drink better" motto, it comes close to the mark. The bar is located in Lincoln Park, and it reaches out to its core college-age crowd with an expansive dance area, a handful of big screen TVs, and a revolving door of drinks specials available at its two wall-length bars. A full bar menu is available, and the Grand Central also hosts private party packages including drinks and food for 10 to 200 people. -Lindsey Klingele Review © 2007, Wcities |

Save Room for Dessert |
N Michigan Ave Chicago, Illinois 60611 United States +1 3122762500 http://www.grandluxcafe.com |
Global cuisine reigns supreme at Grand Lux Cafe. Burgers, pasta, pizza, giant salads, and meat dishes ranging from wiener schnitzel to Jamaican pork tenderloin grace the wide-reaching menu. The Grand Lux Cafe is also an excellent destination for brunch on Saturday or Sunday mornings, with a menu that includes a number of different egg dishes as well as brioche French toast, Belgian waffles, and traditional buttermilk pancakes. One thing that you won't want to miss at Grand Lux Cafe is the dessert. As a sister restaurant to the Cheesecake Factory, it should come as no surprise that a number of cheesecakes are available for you to choose from. However, if you aren't a cheesecake fan, or are in the mood for something different, there are plenty of other options to tempt your palate. Several desserts must be chosen when you order your entree, as they are baked to order. The molten chocolate cake and warm rustic apple pie are two such desserts that are definitely worth trying. If the sweet tooth hits after you have finished your meal, no worries, as there are still plenty of fresh-baked cakes or pies to choose from. Chocoholics will definitely not want to miss the fudge cake collision—a huge portion of rich chocolate cake slathered with hot fudge and vanilla ice cream. -Susan Berg Review © 2007, Wcities |
