1492 Tapas Bar

Chicago, iL 60611
United States
+1 312 867 1492
http://www.1492tapasbar.com
If you've never tried tapas before (or if you're already a fan), then 1492 is the place for you. Located in an unassuming greystone building, this multi-story restaurant is a great place to meet with colleagues or friends after a long day of work or play. Their extensive tapas menu includes a wide-range of hot and cold dishes in small portions that are meant to be shared with friends. (You'll also want to order a pitcher or two of sangria to share as well). While many dishes include meat, there are plenty of meat-free options available for the vegetarians at your table. For those who arrive with a heartier appetite, a number of Spanish and Latin American entrees including a traditional paella are also featured on the menu. -Susan Berg

Monday nights hop at Andy's when the Chuck Hedges "Swingtet" begins to play classic Benny Goodman style swing. On the weekends, you can catch nationally known acts such as Brad Goode. Lunch sets are offered, as well, making this place especially popular with nearby business people. You can grab a decent meal, too, but nothing fancy. This is strictly a burger and pizza kind of joint, which fits in well with the dark, smoky interior.

One of the best kept secrets in Wicker Park, this cozy little pub is decorated with cult-kitsch movie posters from such successes as "The Toxic Avenger." Dick the bartender doesn't hear well, so speak up when you want a Beck's or he will bring you a Bass instead. The jukebox is surreal, and packed with 1980s compilations from New Wave to Pat Benatar. There is hardly ever a crowd, except when there is a gallery opening on nearby Milwaukee, and then there is only a moderate-sized art crowd that doesn't bother anybody.

Regulars are here for the jukebox, the dartboard, a game of cricket and, of course, the liquor. This is one of the few places in the city that gets cozier as the temperature drops. The risk of frostbite on the journey there is outweighed by the prospect of warming up next to the hearth of one of the few working bar fireplaces in the city. The Lounge draws a healthy weekend crowd and is a favorite of many people who don't live nearby.

If not interested in playing then you can be an audience to various league games, that take place here though on fixed days and time.

The happy hour buffet on Thursdays and Fridays is quite popular with the regulars. The cigar bar and the outdoor seating are other major reasons for Clark's popularity. Climax Lounge is dissected into several rooms, one housing a tree in the center, while another has a vaulted ceiling and a disco ball. The decor is dark; a very sleek goth and Renaissance-revival motif runs through out the nightclub. Gargoyles and stone arches are key ingredients in creating the nightspot's atmosphere. The music is a blend of Euro, Trans and Electro. The crowd is young and swanky, fitting for this club whose bathroom attendant wears a tux.

Tucked inside the Drake Hotel, this is one of the city's most elegant bars. It is not hard to believe that this dimly lit bar with its Old World charm dates back to the early 1930s. Order up a martini, find a cozy table and bask in the swank of this experience. The menu features limited seafood selections, including a rich, flavorful clam chowder that is particularly satisfying on a cold day.

If the frantic pace and atmosphere of the nearby places in Greektown intimidate you, try this more casual, relaxed spot. Live piano music tinkles away as you sit in a very comfortable dining room and are waited on by a very friendly staff. Specialties include stuffed calamari and Athenian chicken; besides the traditional Greek fare, there are also a variety of fresh seafood, chops and steaks to choose from. Costa's is more sophisticated than most of the Greektown restaurants, and slightly higher prices reflect this.

This "alternative" club is housed in a bleak-looking warehouse, with a bleak interior that matches quite well with the outside. The dark interior features a guillotine and music that no one outside of Crobar's domain will hear on the radio for at least a year. The music played is progressive and fresh, but it is extremely difficult to get in to listen to it. More than half the people who show up are turned away at the door, unless you happen to be gay and have brought your lover along with you. Straight people are welcome - just don't show up dressed in khakis.

Cru is a big surprise because it is situated around the corner from a plethora of collegiate frat-boy bars and clubs that cater to a more boisterous and loud clientele. Yet Cru offers a quieter, comfortable atmosphere that feels like a lounge without the cheesy retro feel. Instead, the zebra wood bar and quietly eclectic fusion, jazz and bossa nova tunes provide an ideal setting for conversation and savoring your drink. Cru features 400 wines, a small but select variety of single-malt scotches, bourbons, sherries and cognacs and a light menu featuring crisp, fresh and flavorful European café fare that takes the edge off without weighing you down. Especially worth a try are the excellent beef carpaccio and the fine selection of cheeses.

Located in the heart of the River North, Cyrano's is one of Chicago's finest offerings. Styled like a typical Parisian bistro, a meal here would definitely transport you to the city of lights. Chef and owner Didier Durand has taken great care in selecting the exquisite food and wine menus. Dunard famously spoke out against the foie gras, by saying that you may not find it your check but you'll find $16 potatoes. Enjoy a grand five-course meal with items, such as Chilled Lobsters, Baked Frog Legs with Garlic and Crumbs, Smoked Duck, and Israeli Couscous - perhaps you'll discover some other $16 worthy treat in one of your dishes. And to complete the French tradition, there's an assortment of desserts and cheese to choose from. A live band, cabaret performances and comedy shows while you dine ensure that you return to Cyrano's over and over again.

De La Costa mainly attracts the chic and trendy crowds because it's "the place" to be. The ambiance is quite appealing and has quite a unique finish. This nightclub is the coolest and hippest in the Chicago nightclub scene, and it tries to accomplish that by targeting a young and above-average income crowd. Everything is expensive, including the stiff $10 cover. If you can spend more, you will have more fun here. The place is all chinoiseries and loud music, a three-level ancient Asian temple becomes a dance club and the dazzle is enough to conjure a few celebrities amid the crowd on the busy main floor, or upstairs in the VIP room. It also boasts a sushi/sake bar, offering several types of sushi rolls, including California (crab, avocado, cucumber) and spicy ebi roll (rice, seaweed, sesame seeds, shrimp, cucumber, avocado, spicy sauce) among others. The Grand Lux Cafe is also an excellent destination for brunch on Saturday or Sunday mornings, with a menu that includes a number of different egg dishes as well as brioche French toast, Belgian waffles, and traditional buttermilk pancakes. One thing that you won't want to miss at Grand Lux Cafe is the dessert. As a sister restaurant to the Cheesecake Factory, it should come as no surprise that a number of cheesecakes are available for you to choose from. However, if you aren't a cheesecake fan, or are in the mood for something different, there are plenty of other options to tempt your palate. Several desserts must be chosen when you order your entree, as they are baked to order. The molten chocolate cake and warm rustic apple pie are two such desserts that are definitely worth trying. If the sweet tooth hits after you have finished your meal, no worries, as there are still plenty of fresh-baked cakes or pies to choose from. Chocoholics will definitely not want to miss the fudge cake collision—a huge portion of rich chocolate cake slathered with hot fudge and vanilla ice cream. -Susan Berg

This airy pub offers indoor and outdoor (during limited times) seating that can accommodate large groups. Live dj's can be found spinning several nights a week. In addition to being a full-service bar, this place doubles as an eatery that even includes brunch on the weekend. There are many televisions around for everyone's viewing pleasure, but can make the area crowded during their specially televised sporting events. Tourists, local business people, and everyday folk can be found at the many tables and seating areas in the Hunt Club during any day of the week. The mood is mellow during the week, allowing for people who need to relax and enjoy a beer, but the bar gets busy on weekends where many tear up the dance floor.

Don Rickles, Al Pacino, Jackie Mason, Oliver Stone, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme have all graced this homage to Jilly Rizzo, the long-time owner of Jilly's in New York, former stomping ground of the Rat Pack. Today, this bar is part of the "Jilly's" complex along Rush Street and features live music seven nights a week. Prepare to flashback to the swinging 1950s as you cuddle up to your Jack Daniels and listen to interpretations of the music of Frank Sinatra and other standards from the Great American Songbook.

And you thought they were 20 years dead. That's right - the 1970s are back, dusted off and pumped up with a cranking modern sound system. Climb down the stairs, check your coat and prepare to shake your booty. Since it opened in 1996, Jilly's Retro has become "the" disco hot spot in town, attracting the beautiful people from Chicago and points west - Hollywood west. Kevin Costner, Chris O'Donnell, Bruce Willis and Michael Jordan are a few of the celebrities who have visited. Do not expect to see them, though. They are usually in the V.I.P. room sipping cognac by themselves. The dressed-to-kill looks of the main floor are enough to impress, but bring your pocket book. Jilly's does not fool around, and even well drinks are expensive, with $7 barely buying you a shot of scotch. Admission varies between $5-$10.

This may not be an authentic Irish pub, but, for a hotel bar, it is pretty darn close. There are dartboards on the wall, an Irishman behind the bar and plenty of Guinness and pub grub to go around. After drinking for awhile and listening to the live Irish music, you might just forget that you are actually off the lobby of the posh Chicago Hilton and Towers Hotel. Even if you are not staying at the hotel, this is a great spot for lunch or just to take a break from your sightseeing. It is less crowded than the other Loop restaurants and bars and far more relaxed.

The music is unpredictable, at once mixing funk, house, electronic and swing tunes. Occasionally, the bar charges a modest cover around $5. The martini offerings are immense, with curiosities like the "Spiked Heel," a concoction of vodka, gin and a mist of vermouth. Or try the "Comfort Zone," with Southern Comfort, sweet vermouth, bitters, sugar and a cherry. If martinis are not your bag, select from a number of premium whiskeys or small batch bourbons.

Owned and operated by true Italians, Macello spares no expense in making the building seem straight from the southern shores of Italy. Converted from a warehouse, the vibe inside is very industrial-chic. Indeed, the word "macello" in Italian means slaughterhouse, so you'll find hanging meat hooks, and clear plastic strip doors separating the dining room from an area set up like a butcher shop, with a full deli case lined with Italian meats and cheeses. Exposed bricks, vaulted wooden ceiling, low lit lanterns, and a massive wood-burning oven complete the look. As for the food, you can't go wrong with the pizzas, but if you're in the mood for something heftier, note that the lamb chops are cut three fingers thick. Street parking and valet available.

This is a tiny bar with a tinier dance floor that tries to combine the intimacy of a neighborhood pub with the boom-boom volume of a nightclub. You can crowd onto the dance floor if you have a death wish. Better, hang back in the smoky bar, choose your cigar and pick from an exhaustive menu of martinis and olives (the blue cheese olive is really good). As far as trendy cigar and martini places go, this is one of the friendliest in the city, but it can get kind of noisy, so do not expect to discuss the latest film while sipping your overpriced drink. There is a $5 cover on Tuesdays for "Club Night" as well as a $3 cover on Fridays and Saturdays.
