1492 Tapas Bar

Tapas, Sangria, and a Group of Friends
42, East Superior Street
Chicago, iL 60611
United States
+1 312 867 1492
http://www.1492tapasbar.com
If you've never tried tapas before (or if you're already a fan), then 1492 is the place for you. Located in an unassuming greystone building, this multi-story restaurant is a great place to meet with colleagues or friends after a long day of work or play. Their extensive tapas menu includes a wide-range of hot and cold dishes in small portions that are meant to be shared with friends. (You'll also want to order a pitcher or two of sangria to share as well). While many dishes include meat, there are plenty of meat-free options available for the vegetarians at your table. For those who arrive with a heartier appetite, a number of Spanish and Latin American entrees including a traditional paella are also featured on the menu. -Susan Berg

The cuisine is quite tasty with specials like the Turkey Club Panini, charcuterie spiced with pepper and chillies. Add up to the wonderful experience with one of the signature cocktails like Cucumber Gimlet, Vino Sangaree or even 'Luscious Combination'.

Monday nights hop at Andy's when the Chuck Hedges "Swingtet" begins to play classic Benny Goodman style swing. On the weekends, you can catch nationally known acts such as Brad Goode. Lunch sets are offered, as well, making this place especially popular with nearby business people. You can grab a decent meal, too, but nothing fancy. This is strictly a burger and pizza kind of joint, which fits in well with the dark, smoky interior.

USD23.

Descend the murky stairs and "Butt on in" as the sign says. Made famous by John Belushi's Saturday Night Live "Cheeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger" skit, this joint never fails to please in all of its sleazy glory. For a truly authentic experience, enter late when all the tourists have left. Check out the old Mike Royko columns and photographs on the walls. You can order breakfast until 11a and after that you can order a hot dog, a ham and cheese or a cheeseburger, but you cannot order fries - only chips. Try the "Doublacheez" for a wallop.

Disagreements may ensue as to who is number one, but hamburger aficionados all rank Boston Blackie's burgers in their top three. The half-pound monstrosities come cooked to order, made just the way you like them with your choice of toppings. It is a joy to wash them down with beer served in specially frosted mugs that keep your suds cold all the way through. Tucked inside the Drake Hotel, this is one of the city's most elegant bars. It is not hard to believe that this dimly lit bar with its Old World charm dates back to the early 1930s. Order up a martini, find a cozy table and bask in the swank of this experience. The menu features limited seafood selections, including a rich, flavorful clam chowder that is particularly satisfying on a cold day.

Cru is a big surprise because it is situated around the corner from a plethora of collegiate frat-boy bars and clubs that cater to a more boisterous and loud clientele. Yet Cru offers a quieter, comfortable atmosphere that feels like a lounge without the cheesy retro feel. Instead, the zebra wood bar and quietly eclectic fusion, jazz and bossa nova tunes provide an ideal setting for conversation and savoring your drink. Cru features 400 wines, a small but select variety of single-malt scotches, bourbons, sherries and cognacs and a light menu featuring crisp, fresh and flavorful European café fare that takes the edge off without weighing you down. Especially worth a try are the excellent beef carpaccio and the fine selection of cheeses.

Global cuisine reigns supreme at Grand Lux Cafe. Burgers, pasta, pizza, giant salads, and meat dishes ranging from wiener schnitzel to Jamaican pork tenderloin grace the wide-reaching menu. The Grand Lux Cafe is also an excellent destination for brunch on Saturday or Sunday mornings, with a menu that includes a number of different egg dishes as well as brioche French toast, Belgian waffles, and traditional buttermilk pancakes. One thing that you won't want to miss at Grand Lux Cafe is the dessert. As a sister restaurant to the Cheesecake Factory, it should come as no surprise that a number of cheesecakes are available for you to choose from. However, if you aren't a cheesecake fan, or are in the mood for something different, there are plenty of other options to tempt your palate. Several desserts must be chosen when you order your entree, as they are baked to order. The molten chocolate cake and warm rustic apple pie are two such desserts that are definitely worth trying. If the sweet tooth hits after you have finished your meal, no worries, as there are still plenty of fresh-baked cakes or pies to choose from. Chocoholics will definitely not want to miss the fudge cake collision—a huge portion of rich chocolate cake slathered with hot fudge and vanilla ice cream. -Susan Berg

Tourists, local business people, and everyday folk can be found at the many tables and seating areas in the Hunt Club during any day of the week. Kevin Costner, Chris O'Donnell, Bruce Willis and Michael Jordan are a few of the celebrities who have visited. Do not expect to see them, though. They are usually in the V.I.P. room sipping cognac by themselves. The dressed-to-kill looks of the main floor are enough to impress, but bring your pocket book. It's the Ritz Carlton, so what can you say? Although its dining room caters to its many hotel guests, visitors not staying at the hotel find the Ritz Carlton Dining Room just the right place, especially for their every Sunday Brunch. Full course dinners are in order from Wednesday through Saturday beginning at 6pm.

Second Story Bar

Neighborhood watering hole
157 East Ohio Street, Suite 2
Chicago, IL 60611-3107

Above the Armenian restaurant Sayat Nova, this neighborhood pub and gay bar is dark and filled with denizens who visit the place with a regularity frightening to even the most jaded of barflies. The busiest hours are right after the workday finishes until approximately 8p, no doubt in part because of the scarcity of bars in the area. The place picks up again after the bar-hopping crowd finds its way home.

Climb down the stairs past the bouncer and enter a college bar in the middle of the biggest tourist area in town. Students from nearby Loyola and Northwestern universities have called this bar their home for years. Streeters offers a special on a different micro-brew each month. It is also a fine place to hide from family members while they shop across the street at American Girl Place.

Even though it's right in the thick of the Rush Street action, this bar and grill manages to retain a more intimate, informal atmosphere than the other places nearby. Downstairs is the comfortable bar with TVs tuned in to sporting events. A fairly good restaurant can be found upstairs, serving steaks, chops and pizzas cooked in a wood-burning oven. There is a separate smoking section in the restaurant and otherwise smoking is restricted to the bar.

If you are a sports fan, prepare to gawk while your tongue lolls in the dust. There are no less than 30, yes 30, television sets blazing in this place, hooked up to enough satellite dishes to give the bar the look of some kind of intergalactic flying machine. It also has pool tables and dart boards for between-game breaks and chicken wings, nachos, burgers and other food selections to keep the alcohol from overtaking your brain.

The name pretty much says it all. Descend the steps into Lonnie Walker's (that's Lonnie, not Johnny) smoky lair. Live jazz and blues plays seven nights a week, and you never know who might show up to sit in on a set or two. This is a surprisingly hip kind of joint for an area that might be described as a tourist trap. It's wonderful, baby.
