Tapas, Sangria, and a Group of Friends |
42, East Superior Street Chicago, iL 60611 United States +1 312 867 1492 http://www.1492tapasbar.com |
If you've never tried tapas before (or if you're already a fan), then 1492 is the place for you. Located in an unassuming greystone building, this multi-story restaurant is a great place to meet with colleagues or friends after a long day of work or play. Their extensive tapas menu includes a wide-range of hot and cold dishes in small portions that are meant to be shared with friends. (You'll also want to order a pitcher or two of sangria to share as well). While many dishes include meat, there are plenty of meat-free options available for the vegetarians at your table. For those who arrive with a heartier appetite, a number of Spanish and Latin American entrees including a traditional paella are also featured on the menu. -Susan Berg Review © 2007, Wcities |

Monday nights hop at Andy's when the Chuck Hedges "Swingtet" begins to play classic Benny Goodman style swing. On the weekends, you can catch nationally known acts such as Brad Goode. Lunch sets are offered, as well, making this place especially popular with nearby business people. You can grab a decent meal, too, but nothing fancy. This is strictly a burger and pizza kind of joint, which fits in well with the dark, smoky interior. USD23. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For a truly authentic experience, enter late when all the tourists have left. Check out the old Mike Royko columns and photographs on the walls. Learning about and selecting a fine wine have never been so easy and enjoyable. Simply order the meal at the in-store restaurant and sample the wines as you eat. The menu provides captions next to the entrees suggesting wines that would go well with the meal. More than 50 varieties are available. While the wine may be the focus of the restaurant, the food and décor are hardly after thoughts. The well-lit diner highlights the rust colored curtains, the cherry-wood trim and circular bar. The stockyards may have gone away, but another kind of meat market has taken shape in Chicago. Although the strip of Division surrounding this bar is well known as a singles' Mecca, Butch McGuire's may be king of them all. The Irish decor is minimal, but people do not frequent Butch McGuire's for its charm; they come here to find someone charming. Kitschy ramblings about shamrocks and blarney stones do not apply here - this is not that kind of Irish pub. Instead, Celtic Crossings is a warm, comfortable place you imagine entering from a rainy, chilly Irish afternoon to tuck away a pint of good Guinness beer while catching up with your mates. While friendly, the bartender will not tolerate drunken frat-boy antics. Dark wooden trim, pews all around and Irish beer and whiskey are emphasized here. Global cuisine reigns supreme at Grand Lux Cafe. Burgers, pasta, pizza, giant salads, and meat dishes ranging from wiener schnitzel to Jamaican pork tenderloin grace the wide-reaching menu. The Grand Lux Cafe is also an excellent destination for brunch on Saturday or Sunday mornings, with a menu that includes a number of different egg dishes as well as brioche French toast, Belgian waffles, and traditional buttermilk pancakes. One thing that you won't want to miss at Grand Lux Cafe is the dessert. As a sister restaurant to the Cheesecake Factory, it should come as no surprise that a number of cheesecakes are available for you to choose from. However, if you aren't a cheesecake fan, or are in the mood for something different, there are plenty of other options to tempt your palate. Several desserts must be chosen when you order your entree, as they are baked to order. The molten chocolate cake and warm rustic apple pie are two such desserts that are definitely worth trying. If the sweet tooth hits after you have finished your meal, no worries, as there are still plenty of fresh-baked cakes or pies to choose from. Chocoholics will definitely not want to miss the fudge cake collision—a huge portion of rich chocolate cake slathered with hot fudge and vanilla ice cream. -Susan Berg Review © 2007, Wcities |

Beloved sportscaster Harry Caray may be gone, but to Cub fans, his spirit remains—and so does his restaurant. The building, designed in 1895 by Henry Ives Cobb as a factory that made varnishes for furniture, is worth a look itself. The sprawling multi-floor restaurant houses a huge sports bar and is a veritable museum of Cubs and Harry Caray memorabilia. The Italian-American menu features a wealth of traditional offerings like Baked Lasagne, Italian Sausage and Peppers and numerous pastas. For a pricey evening, opt for one of the variety of steaks and chops. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dine with the blues |
329 North Dearborn Street Chicago, IL 60610 United States +1 312 923 2000 http://www.hob.com/ |
House of Blues, famous at its many locations around the globe, loses none of the glamour and glitz of its "faux dive" specialty here! Outsider art hangs all over the place from floor to ceiling, and you get the feel of being in a perverted opera house. With seating more than 1,500 people, HOB lets visitors catch a concert while snacking on such menu selections as "The Elwood" (blackened chicken sandwich with chili garlic mayonnaise, green chilies and sour cream served with seasoned french fries). Average menu prices are about $9, topping out at $21 for a New York strip steak. There is live music seven nights a week, with cover charges ranging from $10 to $25. Music styles are not limited to the blues— jazz, rock and such favorite bands as Duran Duran and Styx are also featured. You must make a reservation ahead of time. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Rivet-ing bar on Rush |

Ahoy there. Whether it is liquor you are after or a tasty piece of scrod, sink your anchor here, matey. The impression upon walking in the door is of bass fishing in Minnesota on holiday, using frogs for bait. The decor is all about fishing, with paintings of fishermen hauling them in every which way. Strap on your bib, get out those crackers and dive into some of the best seafood in town. The menu specialties include such fanciful dishes as Shrimp DeJonghe, Surf and Turf and, yes, Frog Legs. This airy pub offers indoor and outdoor (during limited times) seating that can accommodate large groups. Live dj's can be found spinning several nights a week. In addition to being a full-service bar, this place doubles as an eatery that even includes brunch on the weekend. There are many televisions around for everyone's viewing pleasure, but can make the area crowded during their specially televised sporting events. Tourists, local business people, and everyday folk can be found at the many tables and seating areas in the Hunt Club during any day of the week. The mood is mellow during the week, allowing for people who need to relax and enjoy a beer, but the bar gets busy on weekends where many tear up the dance floor. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Don Rickles, Al Pacino, Jackie Mason, Oliver Stone, Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme have all graced this homage to Jilly Rizzo, the long-time owner of Jilly's in New York, former stomping ground of the Rat Pack. Today, this bar is part of the "Jilly's" complex along Rush Street and features live music seven nights a week. Prepare to flashback to the swinging 1950s as you cuddle up to your Jack Daniels and listen to interpretations of the music of Frank Sinatra and other standards from the Great American Songbook. And you thought they were 20 years dead. That's right - the 1970s are back, dusted off and pumped up with a cranking modern sound system. Climb down the stairs, check your coat and prepare to shake your booty. Since it opened in 1996, Jilly's Retro has become "the" disco hot spot in town, attracting the beautiful people from Chicago and points west - Hollywood west. Kevin Costner, Chris O'Donnell, Bruce Willis and Michael Jordan are a few of the celebrities who have visited. Do not expect to see them, though. They are usually in the V.I.P. room sipping cognac by themselves. The dressed-to-kill looks of the main floor are enough to impress, but bring your pocket book. Jilly's does not fool around, and even well drinks are expensive, with $7 barely buying you a shot of scotch. Admission varies between $5-$10. Review © 2007, Wcities |

French for "Red Apple," this bar has a certain "je ne sais quoi". The bar has a turn-of-the-century vibe with bits of Baroque, Art Nouveau, and Victorian flair interspersed. Most of the original pieces are mirrors, stools, paintings, and other items that really give you the feeling of having been transported back in time. Its a fairly large venue with three rooms that are available for private parties. They also hold regularly scheduled events such as intellectual readings and performances. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Lan presents a fine melange of both the culture and cuisine of Vietnam. Simply yet elegantly doneup, the moon shaped window is a reminder of the significance of the moon in Vietnam. Its traditional cuisine and authentic flavors will leave you licking your lips. For starters, sample the Chili Poached Dumpling and complement it with Lobster Tea. Entrees include Lemongrass Scented Grilled Bass, Organic Coconut Chicken and Smoked Squab. The restaurant serves a few French delicacies too. Desserts like the Passion Fruit Raspberry Tart with milk chocolate sorbet and Blackberry Soufflé with vanilla bean ice cream aren't very Vietnamese, but make a great end to a meal. On Tuesdays, a three-course dinner is available for $36. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Casual dining and martinis on the Gold Coast |
7 West Division Street Chicago, IL 60610 United States +1 312 337 2583 http://www.aceplaces.com/ |
This is a swanky little Gold Coast location for lounging and casual dining. The postmodern decor features a melange of furnishings and accessories dating from the 1930-60s. The music is unpredictable, at once mixing funk, house, electronic and swing tunes. Occasionally, the bar charges a modest cover around $5. The martini offerings are immense, with curiosities like the "Spiked Heel," a concoction of vodka, gin and a mist of vermouth. Or try the "Comfort Zone," with Southern Comfort, sweet vermouth, bitters, sugar and a cherry. If martinis are not your bag, select from a number of premium whiskeys or small batch bourbons. This is a tiny bar with a tinier dance floor that tries to combine the intimacy of a neighborhood pub with the boom-boom volume of a nightclub. You can crowd onto the dance floor if you have a death wish. Better, hang back in the smoky bar, choose your cigar and pick from an exhaustive menu of martinis and olives (the blue cheese olive is really good). As far as trendy cigar and martini places go, this is one of the friendliest in the city, but it can get kind of noisy, so do not expect to discuss the latest film while sipping your overpriced drink. There is a $5 cover on Tuesdays for "Club Night" as well as a $3 cover on Fridays and Saturdays. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Some words of inspiration from football legend Mike Ditka: "The will to win means nothing without the will to prepare." So...let's prepare by eating a good meal at this supper club that doubles as a hall-of-fame to the former coach of the Chicago Bears. The walls are lined with tributes and Ditka's personal mementos. Try one of these original dishes: French Onion and Sauerkraut "Hangover Soup," Black and Blue Tuna "Puttanesca," Training Table Pot Roast or Cowboy T-bone with Soupy Red Beans. Entrees range from $9.89-$33.89. Even though he is no longer associated with a Chicago team, for Chicago fans, Iron Mike will always be "Da Coach," so why not make a reservation and check out his place? And the lighting is the dim and seductive kind that casts romantic shadows across your face (and keeps the blemishes at bay). Narcisse goes out of its way to create an indulgently delicious ambiance. The vibe at Niu Japanese Fusion Lounge is hip yet casual. The beautifully-appointed interior is sleek and inviting, so it makes a good pre-or-post movie stop (AMC Theaters is adjacent to the restaurant). The menu is split into "Traditional" and "Fusion" items. Sushi, sashimi, tempura and wok stir fries accompany less traditional concoctions such as the Sexy Mexican roll (shrimp, spicy crab, and jalapeño topped with avocado) or the Shishito Peppers (scallops, crab, and cream cheese stuffed in a fried jalapeño pepper). Long before Rush Street became tourist central, there was Pippin's. Since 1949, this has been a casual sports bar catering to the after work crowd. Within its cramped, woody interior, you will find a pinball machine, a couple of video games, a juke box and a TV constantly tuned to sports. It is now a quiet shadow of its former glamorous self, but you should still stop by, if only for a drink at the lounge. Back in its heyday, the Pump Room, named for the famous Pump Room Restaurant at the Roman ruins in Bath, England, catered to celebrities who all sat at the infamous "Table One," which is now sadly stashed away in a warehouse at The Chicago Historical Society. Frank Sinatra, Milton Berle and just about anyone else you can think of has dined here. Closed in 1971, the restaurant was later bought by Chicago's mighty Lettuce Entertain You Company, refurbished and reopened. Today, the restaurant is, thankfully, back in the hands of the Omni Ambassador East Hotel and is starting to reflect its old elegance. Dance All Night |
226 West Ontario Street Chicago, IL 60610 United States +1 312 787 4480 http://www.sound-bar.com |
Crowded, snobbish and a mandatory coat check? But that doesn't deter masses from River North and beyond to dress it up for Sound Bar. The bars (nine in all) serve a heady mix of spirits and the spacious dance floor lures visitors to shake a leg. DJs Dave Seaman and Deep Dish, valet parking, stylish lounge, and a trendy atmosphere make up for the long wait outside. Note: no shorts or sneakers. Review © 2007, Wcities |

5,000 square feet of space, with a 60 foot high waterfall, bamboo fronds and cherry blossom trees greet patrons at this very stylish, strictly 21-and-over "liquor bar". Come on in and indulge your senses with the aromatherapy and meditation sessions, all with a cuppa cocoa in winter or bottled water in the hotter months. Cocktails, top-notch bar snacks and fresh juices are available for the savoring. Though not easy to find, the spiffy joint is a huge hit. Come loaded with the green stuff—it gets depleted easily! College bar off Michigan Avenue |
50 East Chicago Avenue Chicago, IL 60611 United States +1 312 944 5206 http://www.rushanddivision.com... |
Climb down the stairs past the bouncer and enter a college bar in the middle of the biggest tourist area in town. Students from nearby Loyola and Northwestern universities have called this bar their home for years. Streeters offers a special on a different micro-brew each month. It is also a fine place to hide from family members while they shop across the street at American Girl Place. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Samba and Teppanyaki |
504 North Wells Street Chicago, IL 60610 United States +1 312 595 2300 http://sushisamba.com/top.html |
Cuisines of Brazil and Japan, live music, elaborate seating area and an extensive wine and sake list are reasons why you should dine here. Michael Cressotti and Shigeru Kitano do a superb job and create dishes like Tuna Sashimi Serviche ($12) and Vegetable Udan ($17). For dessert, you must try Tres Liete ($8); it goes well with a glass of Port, Sherry or Cognac. Also events, such as 'Make and Eat your own Sushi' are organised from time to time. Not the Failed Musical |
738, N Clark Street Chicago, Il United States +1 312 787 9900 |
Unlike the ill-fated musical of the same name, there's no Boy George in crazy make-up at this Tabu. What you will find here is scantily clad ladies pouring generous shots and well-balanced mixed drinks. This bar is bachelor party ready, so bring the boys and get rowdy. But don't forget to tip. Upscale Rush Street sports bar |
1031 North Rush Street Chicago, IL 60611-1227 United States +1 312 664 9600 http://www.tavernonrush.com/ |
Even though it's right in the thick of the Rush Street action, this bar and grill manages to retain a more intimate, informal atmosphere than the other places nearby. Downstairs is the comfortable bar with TVs tuned in to sporting events. A fairly good restaurant can be found upstairs, serving steaks, chops and pizzas cooked in a wood-burning oven. There is a separate smoking section in the restaurant and otherwise smoking is restricted to the bar. Review © 2007, Wcities |

An Army of Fun |
56 W Illinois Street Chicago, IL 60610 United States +1 312 644 7600 http://www.theundergroundchica... |
Every bouncer at The Underground, decked out in full army gear, is equipped with walkie talkies and clipboards as guests are cleared for entrance. Walking down stairs to the subterranean dance floor, concrete walls surround party goers and thick metal doors reverberate with the muffled beats of thumping bass. If you are prepared to drop some cash, this ultra-hip nightclub is sure to deliver a memorable night. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mega-sports bar facility |
622 North Fairbanks Court Chicago, IL 60611 United States +1 312 642 0700 http://www.timothyotooles.com/ |
If you are a sports fan, prepare to gawk while your tongue lolls in the dust. There are no less than 30, yes 30, television sets blazing in this place, hooked up to enough satellite dishes to give the bar the look of some kind of intergalactic flying machine. It also has pool tables and dart boards for between-game breaks and chicken wings, nachos, burgers and other food selections to keep the alcohol from overtaking your brain. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hip bar in a tourist location |
10 East Walton St Chicago, IL 60611 United States +1 312 266 7761 http://www.undergroundwonderba... |
The name pretty much says it all. Descend the steps into Lonnie Walker's (that's Lonnie, not Johnny) smoky lair. Live jazz and blues plays seven nights a week, and you never know who might show up to sit in on a set or two. This is a surprisingly hip kind of joint for an area that might be described as a tourist trap. It's wonderful, baby. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Get your unbearable light right |
632 North Dearborn Street Chicago, IL 60610-3829 United States +1 312 266 2114 |
This three-level dance spot is the former home of Excalibur's Dome Room, and Vision maintains all of the flair of its predecessor. There are booths on the second floor where you can hide out behind curtains and sip rock-salt, if you like. You are high above the dance floor here, a location that serves as the perfect vantage point to pick and choose amicable dance partners from afar. Come out Fridays for Tranceformation, with DJ Chris Gin and Pulz-8, spinning on four "decks". DJs Harry the Blade and Brian Clarke man the controls on Saturdays. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Mexican vibes |
358 West Ontario Street Chicago, IL 60610 United States +1 312 308 9977 http://www.zocalochicago.com/ |
Experience a bit of the culinary sensuousness that drives the people of Mexico! This cozy, elegant little restaurant serves up delicacies like Grilled Cornish Hen, marinated-to-a-pickle Pork Tenderloin, and Octopus Ceviche in a throat-warming pineapple-ginger sauce. A jolly bartender puts together a plethora of margaritas—the country's national drink—generously doused with tequila and served in salt-rimmed glasses for a lip-smacking response. Fresh juices lace the drinks, while some cocktails are served in curious little bowls for the exotic effect. Patrons savor these and other delights amid earthy tones and woody furnishings, leaving them quite satiated. Review © 2007, Wcities |
