If you've never tried tapas before (or if you're already a fan), then 1492 is the place for you. Located in an unassuming greystone building, this multi-story restaurant is a great place to meet with colleagues or friends after a long day of work or play. Their extensive tapas menu includes a wide-range of hot and cold dishes in small portions that are meant to be shared with friends. (You'll also want to order a pitcher or two of sangria to share as well). While many dishes include meat, there are plenty of meat-free options available for the vegetarians at your table. For those who arrive with a heartier appetite, a number of Spanish and Latin American entrees including a traditional paella are also featured on the menu. -Susan Berg

Monday nights hop at Andy's when the Chuck Hedges "Swingtet" begins to play classic Benny Goodman style swing. On the weekends, you can catch nationally known acts such as Brad Goode. Lunch sets are offered, as well, making this place especially popular with nearby business people. You can grab a decent meal, too, but nothing fancy. This is strictly a burger and pizza kind of joint, which fits in well with the dark, smoky interior.

For a truly authentic experience, enter late when all the tourists have left. Check out the old Mike Royko columns and photographs on the walls. Learning about and selecting a fine wine have never been so easy and enjoyable. Simply order the meal at the in-store restaurant and sample the wines as you eat. The menu provides captions next to the entrees suggesting wines that would go well with the meal. More than 50 varieties are available. While the wine may be the focus of the restaurant, the food and décor are hardly after thoughts. The well-lit diner highlights the rust colored curtains, the cherry-wood trim and circular bar. The bistro style restaurant serves up a wide selection, including sea scallop appetizers and striped bass fillets.

Although the strip of Division surrounding this bar is well known as a singles' Mecca, Butch McGuire's may be king of them all. Instead, Celtic Crossings is a warm, comfortable place you imagine entering from a rainy, chilly Irish afternoon to tuck away a pint of good Guinness beer while catching up with your mates. While friendly, the bartender will not tolerate drunken frat-boy antics. Dark wooden trim, pews all around and Irish beer and whiskey are emphasized here. Enjoy a grand five-course meal with items, such as Chilled Lobsters, Baked Frog Legs with Garlic and Crumbs, Smoked Duck, and Israeli Couscous - perhaps you'll discover some other $16 worthy treat in one of your dishes. And to complete the French tradition, there's an assortment of desserts and cheese to choose from. Don't go by the size of this button of a pub, cosily ensconsed within Fitzpatrick Chicago Hotel. The meal portions are inversely proportional to its size. Fitzers has been crafted and decorated by Irish workers in Chicago. The simple fare consisting of breakfast and stews Ireland style; makes you forget the vague equations of work and play. But here, no point in playing hard to get, as scoops of piping hot stew works for anybody at the end of a hard day's work!

Global cuisine reigns supreme at Grand Lux Cafe. Burgers, pasta, pizza, giant salads, and meat dishes ranging from wiener schnitzel to Jamaican pork tenderloin grace the wide-reaching menu. The Grand Lux Cafe is also an excellent destination for brunch on Saturday or Sunday mornings, with a menu that includes a number of different egg dishes as well as brioche French toast, Belgian waffles, and traditional buttermilk pancakes. One thing that you won't want to miss at Grand Lux Cafe is the dessert. As a sister restaurant to the Cheesecake Factory, it should come as no surprise that a number of cheesecakes are available for you to choose from. However, if you aren't a cheesecake fan, or are in the mood for something different, there are plenty of other options to tempt your palate. Several desserts must be chosen when you order your entree, as they are baked to order. The molten chocolate cake and warm rustic apple pie are two such desserts that are definitely worth trying. If the sweet tooth hits after you have finished your meal, no worries, as there are still plenty of fresh-baked cakes or pies to choose from. Chocoholics will definitely not want to miss the fudge cake collision—a huge portion of rich chocolate cake slathered with hot fudge and vanilla ice cream. -Susan Berg

For perfectly done steaks and contemporary Italian fare, Grotto on State makes for an excellent dining experience. Wood-panelled decor with a mini waterfall adds a touch of class to the place. Succulent preparations like Vesuvio Chicken, grilled calamari, crab cakes, and more please the palate. The service is satisfactory, leaning towards rude if the place is crowded. Call for reservations. Valet parking is available.

Open in the Rush Street bar district since the 1970s, this popular nightspot's patrons visit to "let it all hang out." The drink of choice seems to be beer, either in bottle or pint glass. The atmosphere is a strange mix of sports bar and dance club. The music is characteristically rock and roll, and the decor, old movie posters and a mosh of thrift store junk, might remind you of a frat house gone public.

Beloved sportscaster Harry Caray may be gone, but to Cub fans, his spirit remains—and so does his restaurant. The building, designed in 1895 by Henry Ives Cobb as a factory that made varnishes for furniture, is worth a look itself. The sprawling multi-floor restaurant houses a huge sports bar and is a veritable museum of Cubs and Harry Caray memorabilia. The Italian-American menu features a wealth of traditional offerings like Baked Lasagne, Italian Sausage and Peppers and numerous pastas. For a pricey evening, opt for one of the variety of steaks and chops.

House of Blues, famous at its many locations around the globe, loses none of the glamour and glitz of its "faux dive" specialty here! Outsider art hangs all over the place from floor to ceiling, and you get the feel of being in a perverted opera house. With seating more than 1,500 people, HOB lets visitors catch a concert while snacking on such menu selections as "The Elwood" (blackened chicken sandwich with chili garlic mayonnaise, green chilies and sour cream served with seasoned french fries). Average menu prices are about $9, topping out at $21 for a New York strip steak. There is live music seven nights a week, with cover charges ranging from $10 to $25. Music styles are not limited to the blues— jazz, rock and such favorite bands as Duran Duran and Styx are also featured. You must make a reservation ahead of time.

In addition to being a full-service bar, this place doubles as an eatery that even includes brunch on the weekend. There are many televisions around for everyone's viewing pleasure, but can make the area crowded during their specially televised sporting events. Tourists, local business people, and everyday folk can be found at the many tables and seating areas in the Hunt Club during any day of the week. Climb down the stairs, check your coat and prepare to shake your booty. Since it opened in 1996, Jilly's Retro has become "the" disco hot spot in town, attracting the beautiful people from Chicago and points west - Hollywood west. Kevin Costner, Chris O'Donnell, Bruce Willis and Michael Jordan are a few of the celebrities who have visited. Do not expect to see them, though. They are usually in the V.I.P. room sipping cognac by themselves. The dressed-to-kill looks of the main floor are enough to impress, but bring your pocket book. Better, hang back in the smoky bar, choose your cigar and pick from an exhaustive menu of martinis and olives (the blue cheese olive is really good). As far as trendy cigar and martini places go, this is one of the friendliest in the city, but it can get kind of noisy, so do not expect to discuss the latest film while sipping your overpriced drink. It is now a quiet shadow of its former glamorous self, but you should still stop by, if only for a drink at the lounge. Back in its heyday, the Pump Room, named for the famous Pump Room Restaurant at the Roman ruins in Bath, England, catered to celebrities who all sat at the infamous "Table One," which is now sadly stashed away in a warehouse at The Chicago Historical Society. Frank Sinatra, Milton Berle and just about anyone else you can think of has dined here. Closed in 1971, the restaurant was later bought by Chicago's mighty Lettuce Entertain You Company, refurbished and reopened. Today, the restaurant is, thankfully, back in the hands of the Omni Ambassador East Hotel and is starting to reflect its old elegance. A trio plays music daily as you dance or dine on steaks, Baked Alaska and other American classics. Be sure to make reservations and absolutely wear a jacket and tie.

The Reagle Beagle is a brand new bar and lounge located in the center of Chicago. Keeping with the title's theme, the bar likes to throw back to yesteryear with '70s and '80s music, kitschy cocktails, and even sing-alongs. The food is of the pub grub ilk, making you feel right at home. Fondue, everyone's favorite guilty pleasure from that era, is also available. So come check out the nostalgia fest.

Renditions of Cat Stevens, the Rolling Stones, Billy Joel, and Beatles rent the air as you set foot into this place. Known for music and spirits, Redhead is the place to reminisce over a bottle of Chandon Brut. Liquors, cocktails, and classic wines feature in the drinks menu. The cigar rack is also promising. The piano area is busy with artistes and sing-along buddies requesting their favorite number. The attire is strictly business casual.

Chef Alessandro Forti hails from the Trastevere part of Rome, and his recipes have Trasteverean culinary characteristics - they are, however, executed in contemporary style. Handmade Cappellacci Pasta served with Lobster Stuffings, Roast Chicken, Beef and Tuna Carpaccio, and Prosciutto-wrapped Scallops are some of the fare you can expect to find at this trattoria. The service is friendly, the prices unassuming, and live classical guitar performances are hosted on Sunday nights.

Second Story Bar

Neighborhood watering hole
157 East Ohio Street, Suite 2
Chicago, IL 60611-3107
United States
+1 312 923 9536
Above the Armenian restaurant Sayat Nova, this neighborhood pub and gay bar is dark and filled with denizens who visit the place with a regularity frightening to even the most jaded of barflies. The busiest hours are right after the workday finishes until approximately 8p, no doubt in part because of the scarcity of bars in the area. The place picks up again after the bar-hopping crowd finds its way home.

Crowded, snobbish and a mandatory coat check? But that doesn't deter masses from River North and beyond to dress it up for Sound Bar. DJs Dave Seaman and Deep Dish, valet parking, stylish lounge, and a trendy atmosphere make up for the long wait outside. Note: no shorts or sneakers.

Come on in and indulge your senses with the aromatherapy and meditation sessions, all with a cuppa cocoa in winter or bottled water in the hotter months. Cocktails, top-notch bar snacks and fresh juices are available for the savoring. Though not easy to find, the spiffy joint is a huge hit. Come loaded with the green stuff—it gets depleted easily!

Cuisines of Brazil and Japan, live music, elaborate seating area and an extensive wine and sake list are reasons why you should dine here. Michael Cressotti and Shigeru Kitano do a superb job and create dishes like Tuna Sashimi Serviche ($12) and Vegetable Udan ($17). For dessert, you must try Tres Liete ($8); it goes well with a glass of Port, Sherry or Cognac. Also events, such as 'Make and Eat your own Sushi' are organised from time to time.

Unlike the ill-fated musical of the same name, there's no Boy George in crazy make-up at this Tabu. What you will find here is scantily clad ladies pouring generous shots and well-balanced mixed drinks. This bar is bachelor party ready, so bring the boys and get rowdy. But don't forget to tip.

Even though it's right in the thick of the Rush Street action, this bar and grill manages to retain a more intimate, informal atmosphere than the other places nearby. Downstairs is the comfortable bar with TVs tuned in to sporting events. A fairly good restaurant can be found upstairs, serving steaks, chops and pizzas cooked in a wood-burning oven. There is a separate smoking section in the restaurant and otherwise smoking is restricted to the bar.

If you are a sports fan, prepare to gawk while your tongue lolls in the dust. There are no less than 30, yes 30, television sets blazing in this place, hooked up to enough satellite dishes to give the bar the look of some kind of intergalactic flying machine. It also has pool tables and dart boards for between-game breaks and chicken wings, nachos, burgers and other food selections to keep the alcohol from overtaking your brain.

The name pretty much says it all. Descend the steps into Lonnie Walker's (that's Lonnie, not Johnny) smoky lair. Live jazz and blues plays seven nights a week, and you never know who might show up to sit in on a set or two. This is a surprisingly hip kind of joint for an area that might be described as a tourist trap. It's wonderful, baby.

This three-level dance spot is the former home of Excalibur's Dome Room, and Vision maintains all of the flair of its predecessor. There are booths on the second floor where you can hide out behind curtains and sip rock-salt, if you like. You are high above the dance floor here, a location that serves as the perfect vantage point to pick and choose amicable dance partners from afar. Come out Fridays for Tranceformation, with DJ Chris Gin and Pulz-8, spinning on four "decks". DJs Harry the Blade and Brian Clarke man the controls on Saturdays.

Experience a bit of the culinary sensuousness that drives the people of Mexico! This cozy, elegant little restaurant serves up delicacies like Grilled Cornish Hen, marinated-to-a-pickle Pork Tenderloin, and Octopus Ceviche in a throat-warming pineapple-ginger sauce. A jolly bartender puts together a plethora of margaritas—the country's national drink—generously doused with tequila and served in salt-rimmed glasses for a lip-smacking response. Fresh juices lace the drinks, while some cocktails are served in curious little bowls for the exotic effect. Patrons savor these and other delights amid earthy tones and woody furnishings, leaving them quite satiated.
