50 Yard Line Bar and Grille

Get on the line at this unusual sports bar
69 East 75th Street
Chicago, IL 60619-1646
United States
+1 773 846 0005
This is a sports bar, but not exclusively so. Jeans, gym shoes and skull caps are banned after 9pm, and people hit the dance floor for step dancing, a contemporary dance popular with the clientele. If you are not into the dancing, you may want to sit back and observe the action from the skybox. But, if you are only here to watch the game, this bar will not disappoint. The five television sets are always tuned to the event of the day. You can sample from a menu that includes Chicken Wings, Perch and Popcorn Shrimp.

This warm nightspot attracts a young but diverse crowd, and it is easy to see why. The bartenders and waitresses are friendly; the bar is stocked with good microbrews, single malts and small batch bourbons; and the kitchen stays open late. The food at Bar Louie is satisfying, especially late at night. Portions are large enough to share, and the sandwiches are especially outstanding. Be sure to try the Buffalo Calamari, the Blackened Fish Po' Boy Sandwich and the Chicken Skewers.

Step into The Berghoff and step back in time. This 1895 gem of a restaurant weathered the years and is still a much-loved favorite for locals and tourists alike, for many reasons. The food is as sumptuous as the Old World surroundings. Wiener Schnitzel, Sauerbraten, homemade rye bread and its own specialty brews have made the restaurant an institution. Stop by the traditional stand-up bar before dinner for a drink, or crowd in during lunch with local business people to throw back a cold one and a corned beef sandwich. This is truly a Chicago treasure.

+1 312 944 2200
After you leave here, you might long for the days when you could actually have visited the real thing. It seems that a 1940s nightclub has been on-and-off in the works in Chicago for years, but this club finally opened at Pipers Alley in Old Town. Singer Celeste Holme fronts a 16-piece band as you sip cocktails and buy cigarettes from the cigarette girl. This is an experience not readily had anywhere else in the country so it's worth a visit, if for no other reason then to dig big band.

You will be welcome here. The bartenders almost insist on it. In fact, all newcomers are given a tour around the bar. Part of the welcoming process will probably include an introduction to some of the regulars, many of whom are gay men in their 30s or 40s. When the host, Jackie, is on duty, jazz, house and disco music, as well as prizes and food, are served up to grateful patrons. Other times, the bar is more laid back, with customers here to enjoy card games. Thursday is women's night, though many of the male regulars join the party.

Authentic rock and roll venue

Chicago, IL 60622
United States
+1 773 489 3160
http://www.doubledoor.com/
This is perhaps the most authentic rock and roll venue in Chicago. The cover usually ranges anywhere from $5-20, so you should call ahead to find out what the charge is. Performances are held on a medium-sized stage on the main floor. Not much dancing happens here, though there is room for it, and acts tend to be of the strictly rock and roll variety. Big name acts are known to favor this club, including the Rolling Stones, as well as lesser-known virtuoso acts, such as the Magnetic Fields. If music is not your gig, head downstairs to the poolroom or hang out in the second-story seating area and sip beers while watching the crowd glide by.

Chicago, IL 60067
United States
+1 847 358 9150
http://www.durtynellies.com
In business since 1972, this Palatine Irish pub is a welcoming, warm place to spend a free evening. The pub is modeled after an establishment of the same name built in 1620 near Bunratty Castle in County Clare. It often features live entertainment, mostly acoustic, which patrons can listen to while snuggling up next to the roaring fireplace in the winter. During the summer months, a lively beer garden area provides a great place to sip a pint and squint at constellations. Though most enjoyable during the warmer months, the garden is open year round. Covers range from $1-$5.

Join the conversation or just listen in as liberals argue about the country's state of affairs. The food matches the words. The menu is mostly vegetarian, but there are a few concessions to the meat eater. All entrees are priced reasonably, around $7. Best of all, you do not have to make a reservation; you can usually find a table. If you opt not to dine, that is perfectly OK. The Heartland acts as a sort of restaurant/bar/nightclub/community center, offering something for nearly everyone. This a great place for people watching and eavesdropping. Live music is sometimes offered on the weekends, usually some kind of folk or "alternative" sound with a small cover charge at the door. Stop by the gift shop and leaf through the current astrology magazines before you leave.

Turn the corner off of Division Street, step inside P.J. Clarke's, and all of a sudden you are a world away from the hormone-driven scene of the nearby singles bars. The downstairs pub is a casual affair with typical pub food. Upstairs, there is a nice Italian-American restaurant that is supposed to hark back to an earlier time, but mostly it is just the Sinatra music that achieves this desired effect. The prices are right on the money. Most of the customers are the "yuppie" crowd in their 30s who are too grown up for the Division Street nonsense nearby, but still enjoy a night out. Average price is around $15. Reservation is advisable for the upstairs dining room.
