404 Wine Bar

Wide variety of wine
2856 North Southport Avenue
Chicago, IL 60657
United States
+1 773 404 5886
Leather couches and a warm and inviting fireplace make this an excellent winter hideout and a great place to recline with a glass of fine wine. Or in the warmer months, sip your wine in the outdoor seating area. Choose from a varied selection of Mexican, Chilean, South African and Italian wines at reasonable prices, available by the glass, flight or bottle. The 404 Bar seeks to take the pretension out of wine. Salut!

The Irish have been immigrating to Chicago for over a hundred years and it seems that the current crop of immigrants have come to nest at this friendly, authentic Irish pub. Come for the pie, stay for the music. Yeah, that saying is supposed to go the other way around, but you can reverse it at the Abbey. Try the shepherd's pie and blood pudding if you wish, but stay for the live, Irish folk music and Guinness on tap. The restaurant also offers a catering service.

One of the best kept secrets in Wicker Park, this cozy little pub is decorated with cult-kitsch movie posters from such successes as "The Toxic Avenger." Dick the bartender doesn't hear well, so speak up when you want a Beck's or he will bring you a Bass instead. The jukebox is surreal, and packed with 1980s compilations from New Wave to Pat Benatar. There is hardly ever a crowd, except when there is a gallery opening on nearby Milwaukee, and then there is only a moderate-sized art crowd that doesn't bother anybody.

A slightly under rated place to have a drink in Roscoe Village, the patrons here belong in the suburbs and act like they are just visiting the city for the night. The food here is a standard mini-pizza for $6 and when you are done, you can hoof it to the back room to watch a band play for a small or sometime not so small cover of between $3 and $8. But check the calendar because this place books every garage band in town. Pared down to its essentials, this is somewhere to go for inconspicuous crowd watching.

This family-owned restaurant west of downtown has charm and integrity. Come hungry - the pasta portions are unbelievable; you can ask for a half order and still have food for the next few days. Bella Notte serves everything from Chicken Vesuvio to Zuppa de Pesce over Capellini. It has a charming, old-world feel with a wonderful mix of clientele and more than a hint of old Chicago when Al Capone was in charge. No Italian restaurant would be complete without a respectable wine list, and Bella Notte is no exception. Bring your whole family and expect to leave full and happy. -Eun Jung Decker

Regulars are here for the jukebox, the dartboard, a game of cricket and, of course, the liquor. This is one of the few places in the city that gets cozier as the temperature drops. The risk of frostbite on the journey there is outweighed by the prospect of warming up next to the hearth of one of the few working bar fireplaces in the city. The Lounge draws a healthy weekend crowd and is a favorite of many people who don't live nearby.

As hard as it tries not to be one of the pretentious Wicker Park bars, this place really cannot help but feel extremely cool about itself. Abounding with middle class posturing, the joint is a wannabe pick-up place, with all the fixings except for actual pick-ups. In addition to the main bar area, patrons can relax in one of the lounge chairs in the TV room. The bar is worth a visit for the food, such as black bean crusted chicken strips and standard burgers and salads, and the exceptional juke box.

Full of young hipsters, this bar used to be the place to be for those Vertigo fans. However, if you're having trouble recognizing the place, thats because it has recently been remodeled and features an entirely new space (that is, if you've never been to Lava Lounge on Damon Avenue.) There's no food here, so make sure you grab something before your night of drinking. If you need a snack, there's some peanuts and chips if you ask the bartender. They are the ones that run the music too, so if you have something in mind just give them a shout.

Popular neighborhood tavern

+1 773 278 5138
This popular neighborhood tavern is one of the busiest bars in Wicker Park. If you arrive here after 11p, you will not find a seat anywhere, not even in the oft fought-over window sills. The preferred drink here is beer by the pint and this bar has all of the standards with the pick of the litter being Red Hook at $3.50. The bartenders and waitresses ooze attitude and so does the crowd. At the cross-hairs of the North-Damen-Milwaukee intersection, this bar is the favorite of area professionals for meat-market debauchery. The bathrooms, if you can step over enough people to get to them, unfailingly reflect that philosophy.

To the dismay of many, Chicago bars still allow smoking. Fortunately for those hoping to escape the haziness that inhabits most pubs in the city, the Charleston is a haven for anyone seeking freedom from smoke filled pubs. Go to the Charleston on a Saturday night. As far as the weekend bar scene goes, the Charleston is lively, but still manageable. They have all the elements of a typical bar experience on a weekend. There's a pool table, an amateur band, and even friendly bartenders. Though mostly populated by artsy hipsters, the Charleston is notably unpretentious (not that most arty hipsters are…). Here is a good neighborhood bar that, with distinct aspects (i.e. non-smoking) blended with a homey feel, establishes it as a staple of Chicago's bar scene. -Jordan Corson

Cleo's is a great neighborhood bar with friendly bartenders, a choice selection of single-malt scotches and whiskeys and a respectable lineup of beers on tap. The customers are friendly and sociable, although conversation dies down noticeably during the feeding frenzy that follows the arrival of the food. This is because the food here is a noticeably above good pub grub, and the different daily specials are a steal. Check out the chicken wings, outstanding chili and interesting pizzas. On Mondays, the bartender turns off the jukebox and turns Cleo's into a jazz lover's haven, spinning tracks by Bird, Diz, Bill Evans and their friends.

Club Lucky has become a tradition for many Chicagoans. Diners can enjoy their meals in the dining room or in the red booths that litter the authentic cocktail lounge. The bar area replicates the lounge that stood in the same location in 1938. Club Lucky's biggest draw is the heaping portions of Sicilian cuisine, including homemade pastas, and giant slabs of succulent steak and ribs. Originally a house, this one-time staple of college patrons across the city has refurbished for a decidedly 1980s feel. The change has not affected the midnight clientele, but the atmosphere is new. The upstairs area where you could sit with a pint of beer in somebody's living room and wander through the kitchen or out onto the balcony simply are not accessible anymore. But there are still plenty of side rooms where you can hide from the main body of the crowd. The place is infamous as a pick-up joint, but the Sergio feel of the bar speaks volumes about the costs of taking lovejoy too far. Drink prices are reasonable.

One of several Dunlays restaurants, the aptly named Dunlays on the Square is a diverse though not exactly eclectic bar and grill on the corner of Logan Square. At Dunlays one can expect well-made drinks, hearty soups, and lots of sandwiches. However, don't come to Dunlays looking for an exquisite dining experience. Probably the best way to think of this restaurant is as a classier, friendlier, and slightly tastier Chiles or Applebees. Bad day at work? Chill out at this over-21 hotspot and shake off that stress. The roomy interiors sport a sprawling bar, dim lighting, leather seats, posters and deep red wallpaper. The resulting drama is cleverly enhanced by vintage mirrors, while pool tables and a stripper pole rule the back rooms. This neighborhood restaurant/bar/dance club benefits from the fact that there are no other hot spots nearby. But that is not to say the place isn't worth your while. On weeknights, the restaurant is popular with the young professionals in the area, who come for the pork chops and and baby back ribs (both for about $10). On leisurely Sundays, brunch is served, starting at 11a. Upstairs, the dance loft serves shrimp cocktails and high-octane Cosmopolitan libations, both of which are extremely popular with the young hip crowd. The main dance area hosts terrific bands that ignite the feet of swing dancers young and old. Even though the atmosphere is swanky, the crowd is very sociable and informal. Make reservations for dinner a couple hours before the band goes on, and enjoy a great meal. The meal is not inexpensive - most meals with a drink and tip are around $65 per person. This longtime neighborhood tavern and retreat for local working class folk has become a focal point of the Chicago bar/pub scene, and was recently listed in Rolling Stone magazine as Best Of Chicago, and for good reason. This is one of the few bars in town that does not stick to one genre of music. Rather, it presents the best of jazz, rock, folk... basically anything as long as it's good. There's a certain rustic charm about the place, with a mounted deer head over the register, and a stuffed marlin in the adjacent Chinook Lounge. There are live acts every day of the week.

The Hungry Brain and thoughts of a dive bar should be synonymous, except with more artsy customers. A fun place, no foolin'
1665 West Fullerton Avenue
Chicago, IL 60614
United States
+1 773 665 1110
This is a very minimalist West Lincoln Park urban dance bar. Mostly when you come here, you do it simply to drink, but there are a few ways to entertain yourself, including a compact dance floor with a mirror ball. The music changes with the night and the DJs on duty, but it usually features the standard dance songs from the past three decades. There's an upstairs room open on weekends to fend-off overcrowding, with plenty of couch space for lounging and a pool table. Admission is $3 Friday & Saturday, $2 Sunday; no cover Monday through Thursday.

"Laid back lounging in Lincoln Park" is this bar's motto, one taken seriously. Daily drink specials make this place popular, with Wednesdays being especially so with $2.75 Stoli cocktails, $3.50 Glass Hoegaarden, $3 refills and free pool. It also offers $1 Goldschlager shots and $2.50 Smirnoff cocktails. Not only are the drinks affordable, but the staff and patrons are very friendly and convivial.

Owners Mark and Laura Blasingame have made this place into an expression of their love for world travel, and the free buffet every Tuesday night, served to reflect the cuisine of a different country every week, is only the first indication of that love. The walls are lined with bookshelves housing a variety of atlases and travel guides, Internet connections are available to help plan your next world voyage, and perhaps most importantly, the draught beer list includes a variety of exciting imports (including Belgians like St. Feuillien, Achouffe and Urthel). On Fridays, enjoy live blues and on Saturday, live jazz. There is no cover charge for either night. See website for details on the quarterly "Cafe Scientifique" lecture/discussion series.

Good friends and good fun have been part of this bar since 1961. This is one of those neighborhood-type places where the photos of those who get the most drunk decorate a wall. Leave your pretensions (and credit cards—cash only, please) at the door when you enter this veritable classic of a dive. The owner, a white-haired woman named Marie Wuczynski, lives above the bar. In her 70s, Marie says that her customers keep her young at heart, and she certainly is feisty enough for it to be true.

Moonshine is a good place to drink away your sorrows; teetotalers, on the other hand, can dance their blues away! The dishes - Shrimp Fettuccine, quesadillas, calamari, Yucatan Chicken, and the like - don't appeal much, but this place is not about food. The muted lighting and funky decor fascinate the senses, and the spirits flow endlessly - take your pick from beers, martinis, cocktails, wines, and more. Whether you shake a leg or simply lounge around, there's always someone friendly you can chat up. Private events are also hosted.

This is a local hangout for many of Chicago's Romanian drinking population, and is situated in a 1940s-era brick building that is a little more warm and inviting than some of the other bars in the area, with an impressive mosaic tile floor. Mac and cheese, peanut butter and jelly, pizza and beer: some things just go better together. Award-winning beers (brewed by a champion brew-master) feature at this open and friendly brewery and pizzeria. Pizzas on offer at Piece include your choice of toppings on either a red (red sauce and mozzarella), white (traditional New Haven-style pizza with olive oil, garlic, and mozzarella), or plain (red sauce, garlic, Parmesan cheese, and olive oil) pie. For those who've arrived at a pizza place with no desire for pizza (what?), there are also several sandwiches and salads to choose from. If somehow you end your meal not completed stuffed with pizza and beer, shell out the cash for some dessert—the chocolate pizza (with house-made chocolate hazelnut sauce and mascarpone cheese) is a culinary concoction not to be missed. This two-room dance establishment is equipped with a cutting-edge sound system that is guaranteed to leave your ears ringing. Even though it is aimed for the serious booty-shaker, you can enjoy pool tables and an old Pac-Man machine if you don't want to trip to the fantastic lights. The DJ spins an eclectic variety of hip-hop, funk, reggae and acid jazz. Prop House's funky environs draws an eclectic crowd. On Friday nights, the black, gay community comes out in droves, while other nights see serious hip-hop enthusiasts as well as gays, lesbians or any combination of the above. But, considering the neighborhood, such a diverse mix of people is not that much of an anomaly. Everyone goes with the flow and gets down to the beat.

This tavern is housed in one of the former Schlitz bars, but the Schlitz is gone. Instead, you will find a good collection of beer and a wonderfully eclectic variety of live music on a stage in an adjoining room. You can drink at the bar for no extra charge, but to hear the music, you have to pay a cover fee (usually around $10). Both parts of the tavern, performance and bar areas, tend to host a mix of locals from the Lakeview neighborhood and others from throughout the city who have come to check out this week's jazz, rock or folk act.

If you get hungry, you can sneak away to the Harmony Grill, which is owned by the same person and attached to the bar.

A recent New York Times article that discussed Chicago theatre companies rightly highlighted this growing off-Loop (the Chicago equivalent of off-Broadway) company. Now finishing its fourth season, The House Theatre of Chicago has built a citywide reputation as a fearless fringe company with a self-aware style yet readily accessible. Much of the House Theatre mission is to involve the collaboration of the artistic process. As such House shows include singing, elaborate (yet tasteful) special effects, and many other elements that play to the best parts of the spectacle of theatre. If you plan on checking out something outside the world famous theatres (i.e. Steppenwolf and Goodman), the House Theatre is rapidly becoming a staple of the brilliant Chicago theatre scene. -Jordan Corson

Though often advertised as something of a sports bar, this tavern serves up a much loftier atmosphere. The leather chairs and hardwood floors give it a lounge-like feel, so you may feel more inclined to sip wine than chug beer.
