Regular food, nice people |
1225 North Milwaukee Avenue Chicago, IL 60622 United States +1 773 235 4151 |
This is a greasy spoon in the nicest sense. The space can be cramped, but the price is right. The diner's burger special with fries is a deal at $3, and the fish strips come in portions of plenty. The menu is vast and deep-fried, with the BBQ rib tips topping the dinner plate at $4.75. There is bar and booth-seating toward the back, vibrant with that old-style Chicago-diner feel. Breakfast is served 6a-11a. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A city favorite since 1957, expect good food at good prices. Breakfasts featuring Swedish pancakes and sausage are popular, and you can get Ann Sather's renowned cinnamon rolls day or night. For dinner, try traditional Swedish meatballs and dumplings, or go for burgers and salads. Walk off your meal with a trip to Wrigley Field, just four blocks away. The train runs right next door, and parking is available. One interesting fact--Ann Sather was actually Norwegian, not Swedish. Another location is at 5207 North Clark Street, +1 773 271 6677. There are Jewish restaurants left in Chicago |
3107 North Broadway Avenue Chicago, IL 60657-4522 United States +1 773 477 0300 http://www.bagelrestaurant.com/ |
You do not have to go to Skokie (or New York) to find a great Jewish restaurant. The Bagel has been serving all your favorites since 1950, and people still crowd in, especially on weekend mornings, to gorge themselves on food that is somewhat less than healthy. The inside of the restaurant is lined with posters of Broadway musicals, and the sound system is constantly playing an assortment of obscure Sinatra recordings and other American standards from the 1940s and 50s. All the staple items are there. New York-style desserts round out the menu, with, of course, the ubiquitous Dr. Brown's colas. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A quaint cottage-like setting awaits diners at this comfortable eatery. Nothing fancy here, but good homestyle cooking at reasonable prices. This place is only open for breakfast and lunch. At breakfast, consider biscuits and gravy, pancakes, eggs or French toast. Save room for the warm, homemade scones. When you crave sammies |
811 North Michigan Avenue Chicago, IL 60611 United States +1 312 664 2733 |
The big news about this place is that it is in the historic Waterworks. The restaurant chain Lettuce Entertain You strikes again and this time its target is the sandwich or flat sammie. Breakfast, lunch, dinner and desserts are served in this huge cafe. This concoction, according to Lettuce, is a "multiethnic sandwich served on unique, fresh baked bread." It may be gimmicky, but it is still pretty good. There's a pleasant outdoor seating area where even your dog can get a little snack. Review © 2007, Wcities |

If Ann Sather's restaurant is too crowded and you do not feel like waiting for a table, walk straight across the street to Clarke's. Chances are there will not be much of a crowd. Although the place does not look like much (in fact, it has no atmosphere at all), the food is pretty good. You will find omelets stuffed with cheese and portabella mushrooms, a variety of pancakes and lots of satisfying sandwiches. This is definitely a cut above the typical Denny's fare. Best corned beef sandwich in the city |

Manny's is a bustling, no-nonsense, combination delicatessen/diner. No tablecloths. No fine china. The menu is immense, but folks flock to Manny's for the corned beef sandwiches, arguably the best in town. The corned beef is shaved razor-thin and piled into a mountain between two slices of dark rye bread. The most favored accompaniment is a golden-brown potato pancake. Manny's is also open in the wee hours for breakfast. How do they get those omelets so amazingly fluffy and huge? That is what you will be asking. The answer, of course, is by using a mixer to beat the eggs into submission. You will also gasp when you see just how enormous that bubbly apple pancake (more like a huge apple fritter) is when it is set on your table. In fact, you may be surprised that the table doesn't collapse. Try the German pancake, too. It looks lighter, but looks, as they say, can be deceiving. Whatever you order, expect high quality food. It is no wonder this is one of Chicagoans' favorite breakfast haunts, with super-long lines on the weekend to prove it. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A cafe that lives up to its name |
3408 North Clark Street Chicago, IL 60657 United States +1 773 248 6613 |
Owner Jim Butigan wanted to make sure that this perky little gem wasn't so much like a simple coffeehouse that it went out of business. Thus, when you stroll in, you will be greeted with a menu of appetizers, salads, entrees, sandwiches, pizzas and desserts, as well as a full breakfast menu into the wee hours of the morning. The prices are fair, and you will hardly pay more than $8 for a meal, complete with coffee. The oddly shaped interior is meant to represent the porch of a house, and is decorated to the nines, with colors directly out of the TV show "Saved By the Bell." Occasional live music performances are offered. It is open all day on Friday and Saturday. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Food served here is the type that Mom would make, if she were getting paid," and a decent place for bottled ales, including Himay Ale Red, Maudite Ale and Leffe Ale . Sandwiches come with tasty, crunchy tater tots. Typical menu selections are Grandma's Meatloaf, served with fresh green beans, mashed potatoes & Bell's Amber Ale gravy. Every Wednesday at 10p, sit in and listen to the Declan Jasper Trio perform live jazz. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Yummie Italian goods |

"A Taste of Italy...Unchained!" With three locations in Chicago, this place is all Italian, all the time. Except for dinner. This location is for breakfast and lunch only, and caters to a large number of professionals with generous sandwiches, salads, pastas and pizzas. The decor is predictably Italian-themed, with tastefully bland portraits of old farmers and bowls of fruit hanging on the walls. The tables, like an authentic Italian caffe, can be too close together at times, and fill up quickly. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Bright Place, Good Eats |

Stella's is hands down one of the best places to eat brunch in all of Chicago. While the classic omelets and pancakes are excellent options, the pride of Stella's is the skillet. For a truly hearty brunch order the Hobo, which consists of two eggs, hash browns, tomatoes and cheese all mashed together. As far as diners go, Stella's does not betray the homey decor that is ingrained into such establishments, but offers a brighter atmosphere and incredibly perky service. Also, a morning of Stella's food blends with an afternoon of shopping at adjacent Lakeview shops. -Jordon Corson Review © 2007, Wcities |

Friendly neighbourhood eatery |
1655 North Sedgwick Street Chicago, IL 60614 United States +1 312 266 1616 http://www.twinanchorsribs.com/ info@twinanchorsribs.com |
Housed in a 19th century building, this joint has been famous for its true-blue American grub since the early 1900's. It has been spruced up since then, and the façade is composed of a red brick wall, with a brightly colored awning. Woody interiors with marine accessories set the mood for a hearty meal of their famous ribs. Desserts change daily, so stick to the pick of the day. If you find a single entrée too much for yourself, ask for the split option. Takeaway is charged as well, so watch out for additional cost slipping into your bill. The verdict? Great food and great ambience, albeit a little pricey. Review © 2007, Wcities |
