Hidden Chinese treasures |
2411 South Wentworth Avenue Chicago, IL 60616 United States +1 312 225 8898 |
It is worth straying a few quick blocks from the bustle of Chinatown's epicenter to get to the Evergreen, a pleasant eatery that avoids the cliched dragon-and-phoenix décor of most Chinese restaurants. This is a comfortable family restaurant that carries a touch of class. All your favorites are tasty and served steaming hot, like comfort food should be. But what makes the Evergreen a real find is its many dishes that are excitingly different, yet still accessible. Try the lightly fried spice-salt soft-shelled crabs, the steamed pork with Chinese mustard greens and the revolving array of simply prepared fresh Chinese vegetables that burst with flavor. Your wallet will not suffer here; prices are very reasonable ($15-25). Extremely courteous and friendly servers circulate at lunch and dinner, and specialty drinks complete your meal. Southeast Asian favor |
2201 South Wentworth Avenue Chicago, IL 60616 United States +1 312 326 6888 |
One of the more recent additions to Chinatown, Penang features Southeast Asian culinary delicacies from Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia, among others. Dining here is a delicious adventure, and the staff is always eager to make recommendations: spicy coconut-bas ed beef rendang, sea bass baked in banana leaves, a yam pot filled with stir-fried morsels of meat and vegetable. The appetizers are equally tantalizing, especially skewers of charcoal-grilled satay and crisp-fried roti canai served with curry dipping sau ce. Entrees range from $10-$15. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Classic Chinese cooking |
2131 South Archer Avenue Chicago, IL 60616 United States +1 312 328 0848 |
This Archer Avenue eatery has a loyal following who spare no effort to eat here. Don't dally, because the early diner gets the dim sum. Always crowded, this place has no problem filling seating for 500. The menu celebrates standard Asian fare but the portions are incredible. Try steamed, stir-fried or sauteed chicken, beef, pork or seafood with lots of optional ingredients. Bring friends and feast for under $20 per person. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Dine Like Al Capone |
2110, S. Wabash Avenue Chicago, IL 60616 United States +1 312 328 1198 http://www.room21chicago.com/ |
While dining at Room 21, you expect Al Capone and his entourage of Chicago mobsters to come strolling in. In fact, this South Loop spot was once a Capone-owned speakeasy and saloon. Now, the famed designer/restaurateur Jerry Kleiner has renovated the classic prohibition era hangout into a unique, exciting dining experience. The decor proudly displays an extravagance inspired by the old Chicago vice district, and the menu features upscale American favorites. The bar and wine menu are also fully stocked. Seafood specialist in Chinatown |
2414 South Wentworth Avenue Chicago, IL 60616 United States +1 312 842 6500 / +1 312 225 7060 |
You will find a large, sparse, brightly-lit restaurant with a giant Buddha sculpture to greet you as you enter. This description probably fits many a Chinatown restaurant, but, if you are in the mood for seafood, this place aims to please. With holding tanks of live lobsters and crabs - and a menu featuring two pages of underwater specialties - you are in for a treat. And diners take heed: if it SAYS spicy, it MEANS spicy. The prices are modest. Review © 2007, Wcities |
