The antiques here appeal to a shopper's sense of novelty. This shop is a fun browsing place for serious toys and games collectors and curiosity-seekers alike. The shop carries traditional and mechanical games and novelties, such as a table-top roulette wheel, complete with the original steel ball. Check out the amazing little William Tell Mechanical Bank. Made of cast iron, this miniature depicts William Tell shooting his gun. Place a coin on the gun, and William Tell will shoot the coin into the castle while knocking the apple off the boy's head.

Chicago, IL 60660

This antique store harkens back to a simpler era. Not only is the store filled with old tables, chairs, kitchenware and knickknacks, but it is staffed primarily by good natured women whose demeanors remind you of June Cleaver from the 1950s era "Leave it to Beaver" television show. When it comes time to make your purchase, you won't be greeted by a high-tech computer as cash register, but will find a register that is itself an antique. But even this is a "high tech" gadget, relative to the coin box the manager used for the first two years the store was open.

It is haughty and it is pretentious, but so are all the other antique stores in the River West area, so why be bothered by that? This is the newest addition to the throngs of high-end antique sellers in the area, and this store offers a vast selection of European mirrors, designer accessories, lamps, French Louis Phillipe, oriental rugs and other things that make you wonder if you are really in a museum.

This gallery focuses on imported art and objects from East and West Africa. The stock is mostly a pre-World War II antique assortment of carved wood sculptural pieces that can serve as furniture or gifts for the home. Owner Peter Mullett travels the continent to acquire his pieces, which include wall hangings, Ethiopian chairs and stools and more primitive figurative works. There are a number of religious items, many with a Christian motif. If you are interested in architectural pieces, browse the palace entryways and carved windowsills. The gallery occasionally offers exhibitions that include such works as West African drums and textiles.

Over 25 separate antiques dealers are represented in this huge mall where you can find anything from a World War II bomber jacket to a vintage 1940s Disney cartoon. Expect to get lost as you wander through the many aisles. There are a number of antique shops in the area, but, for sheer comprehensiveness, this is the best. Salt and pepper shakers, eyeglasses, stereopticons and much more can be found here. Perhaps the best feature of the store is that wonderful antique smell. Some think it stale, but the rest of us smell much more: a feeling of history, of being tied to the real people who once treasured and loved the items now for sale.
