1 South State Street 5th Floor Chicago, IL 60603 United States +1 312 641 7000 |
Although the building's glory has long since gone, the marvelous wrought-iron decoration on the front of Louis Sullivan's masterpiece is worth more than a cursory look. While the interior has faded into a status quo department store, the outside is elegance personified. Most of Sullivan's work remains intact, although Daniel Burnham and Co. and Holabird and Roche made later additions. These architectural firms were no slouches. Akin to Him in Bucktown, the stores are decorated in cute, girly pinks, providing the right atmosphere. Teens and tweens can rummage through loads of designer clothes and labels such as Genetic Denim and David and Goliath. Although some of the antiques here are "scratch-and-dent," most are in great shape. In fact, the managers here are real sticklers for finding exquisite antiquarian collectibles, mostly from the Hyde Park area, and have had several years of experience refining their craft. Inside, you'll find armories, dining room and living room furniture, architectural pieces, and housewares. Jewelry, bedroom sets, vintage clothes, shoes, hats, and coats are also on display. 1649 North Damen Ave Chicago, IL 60647 United States +1 773 278 2234 |
From the colorfully painted pipes protruding from the walls to the exposed brick and polished wood floors, one could almost believe this was actually a garage. Of course, unlike a real garage, everything here is spic and span. Every element is calculated to evoke the garage band, the mechanic, and the greaser pitted against the societal machine. Clothing styles represent fashion from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, including a rough-and-tumble selection of Diesel, Bates, and Vanson leather jackets. Everything is pricey and tailored to appeal to a distinctly white-collar sensibility. Review © 2007, Wcities |

1746 West Division Street Chicago, IL 60622-3212 United States +1 773 645 1537 |
Owners Becker and Chunyk have decorated this vintage store with crimson-red paint and thick glass panels. Loads of skirts, 70's and 80's clothing, costume jewelry, and colorful dresses are on offer, along with a men's range. The antique furniture (also for sale) is interestingly archaic. Books, candles, paintings, handbags, jackets and a melange of other articles give the store an adorable yet littered look. Great place to find old stage costumes for a play. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Arguably the first major department store of its kind, Marshall Field's on State Street has stood the test of time and remained a strong presence in the Chicago market. Unlike nearby Carson Pirie and Scott, however, its outside is not aesthetically impressive except for the clock made famous by a Norman Rockwell painting. Also, unlike Carson's, the interior is something to see: The central lobby sweeps up to the roof with glass elevators, fountains gurgle, and a piano player tinkles out American standards. The Tiffany Window, one of the largest ever created, is breathtaking. Review © 2007, Wcities |

You can't get ostrich skin boots at Wal-Mart. Come to think of it, it rarely stocks boots made from alligator or Iguana hide either. This is exactly what makes Raudel Sanchez's store so popular, especially with Mexican bands trying to stay on the cutting edge of band wear. The store also features a wide selection of hats, jackets and denim. These fashions can be costly, so prices can top out at more than $5,000. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Being the most refined of the Alternative Shopping Complex shops, wannabe street kids are less likely to be seen amongst the eclectic jewelry on display here. A helpful and friendly staff, an innovative variety of silver and gemstone jewelry, as well as a collection of Fossil watches are positive points. Browsers are welcomed and will not get the questionable looks that may be drawn at the other stores nearby. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Many of the secondhand shops in town sell grungy duds from the 70s that only appeal to the young and hip. Not here. Silver Moon specializes in quality fashions that first saw the glamorous life back in the 20s, 30s, and 40s. But that's only half of the inventory and half of the appeal. The north wing of the shop houses vintage housewares and knickknacks to charm the new, or maybe the old, you. Review © 2007, Wcities |

This resale shop buys end-of-the-season and damaged or soiled items from the large department stores around town, cleans them, and passes the value onto the customer. This is more of a bargain shopper's palace than any Salvation Army-style resale shop. Everything is arranged on easily accessible racks and shelves throughout the spacious showroom floor. The difference can be found in the proliferation of brand names that you might find at Marshall Fields or Bloomingdale's. The shop handles every type of clothing, including mostly new men's, women's and children's clothes and shoes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located on the mezzanine level of the Chicago Place center on Michigan Avenue, Talbot's has always featured classic styles for women. The offerings are distinctive and display a certain flair, but still remain firmly acceptable for the business world. Talbot's casual designs are just as classic; the woman who wears them would never be mistaken for plain, but it does not take a great leap of faith to adopt the Talbot style as your own.
