Beadniks isn't a typical arts and crafts store. This thoughtful shop- adorned with woodcarvings of Buddha, beads from African Hill Tribes, and Balinese gold- is good for hours of fascination. For just three dollars (and the cost of materials), customers can sit down and work with the knowledgeable staff to create custom jewelry. New to the art of beading? Try their beginner's class. For $60, you will be taught the basics, make and take home earrings, a necklace, bracelet, and jewelry making tools. It is an experience you will not soon forget. -Eun Jung Decker Review © 2007, Wcities |

When you enter Boyajian's, you see right away that although the store space is limited, the place really is a bazaar, complete with tables crammed and piled with things to examine and to ask about. Classic department store |
1 South State Street 5th Floor Chicago, IL 60603 United States +1 312 641 7000 |
Although the building's glory has long since gone, the marvelous wrought-iron decoration on the front of Louis Sullivan's masterpiece is worth more than a cursory look. While the interior has faded into a status quo department store, the outside is elegance personified. Most of Sullivan's work remains intact, although Daniel Burnham and Co. and Holabird and Roche made later additions. These architectural firms were no slouches. Together, they created an enduring Chicago landmark. Review © 2007, Wcities |

What Kennedy Ashinze has done with this piece of real estate is stunning. The store with amulets, candles, jackets, sneakers, rings, bags, Wazobia masks, tees, shrugs, CDs, books, and more is not your regular corner side shop. Arguably the first major department store of its kind, Marshall Field's on State Street has stood the test of time and remained a strong presence in the Chicago market. Unlike nearby Carson Pirie and Scott, however, its outside is not aesthetically impressive except for the clock made famous by a Norman Rockwell painting. Also, unlike Carson's, the interior is something to see: The central lobby sweeps up to the roof with glass elevators, fountains gurgle, and a piano player tinkles out American standards. The Tiffany Window, one of the largest ever created, is breathtaking. Review © 2007, Wcities |

When it comes down to it, any place that goes by the name of "The Boring Store" doesn't know the first lesson just in positive self-promotion. Unless the trick is on us, which certainly is the case with the ironically titled The Boring Store. Brainchild of author Dave Eggers, The Boring Store specializes in spy gear. Yeah, that's right, spy gear! If you are looking for a mustache disguise set or a pair of glasses with a hidden camera, look no further. And whether you are planning to spy on your neighbor or just impress friends at a costume party, rest assured that proceeds from The Boring Store help to fund 826CHI – an educational program that teaches kids creative writing.
