Six Floors of Shopping |
2828 North Clark Street (at Diversey) Chicago, IL 60657 United States +1 773 929 8100 |
Although billed as the mall for progressive people, make no mistake, this is standard shopping. Of course, this is still a fine, six-level shopping mall, but just do not expect surprises. The biggest attraction is the location; the mall is housed in a converted 1930s movie palace. If shopping doesn't tickle your fancy, and if you happen to have a Bally's Fitness membership, the building's top floor houses the health club. If you don't have a membership, try riding up and down in the painfully slow glass elevator for kicks. The building still houses a movie theater as well, Landmark's Century Centre Cinema. Credit cards are accepted, types vary by establishment. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Over 25 separate antiques dealers are represented in this huge mall where you can find anything from a World War II bomber jacket to a vintage 1940s Disney cartoon. Expect to get lost as you wander through the many aisles. There are a number of antique shops in the area, but, for sheer comprehensiveness, this is the best. Salt and pepper shakers, eyeglasses, stereopticons and much more can be found here. Perhaps the best feature of the store is that wonderful antique smell. Some think it stale, but the rest of us smell much more: a feeling of history, of being tied to the real people who once treasured and loved the items now for sale. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Buy, sell and trade |
925 W Belmont Avenue Chicago, IL 60657 United States +1 773 975 9285 |
This place was made for the savvy shopper. While it offers the standard array of second-hand compact discs, cassettes and vinyl, the real deal comes with a hefty trade-in allowance. While you can sell your used CDs for cold hard cash, your best bet is to make a trade, where the exchange value is upped by a third. When you need to refortify your music collection, bring your old CDs here, where you can choose from a hefty trade-in selection of domestic, imports and independent labels. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Novelty country music store |

Old country records are the speciality here, but fans can also pick up some cute accessories like retro cowboy clothing, costume jewelry, and collectible board games. Shoppers often find some great vinyl rarities in the large collection. The owner knows his records, but if you've got a question, your best bet is to be specific. The last we heard, they're only taking cash and personal checks. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Where the selections are in the work |
3510 N Broadway Avenue Chicago, IL 60657 United States +1 773 975 0002 |
This is a bookstore with real personality. Owner Keith Peterson decorates the place with photos from his many globe-trotting expeditions. In homage to the store's large crime genre section, manager Charles Simmons calls himself the "Lord High Commissioner," a reference to a 1930s-era hit-man called the "Lord High Executioner" by the newspapers. But don't think the store focuses so much on personality that it forgets about the merchandise. While the selection is general interest, it has sections of fiction, humanities, philosophy, anthropology, and psychology sections. Cookbooks and sheet music are also featured. The store, in its new location on the Loop, offers wonderful views of the gardens of Grant Park. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Alternative jewelry store |
856 West Belmont Avenue (Alternative Shopping Complex) Chicago, IL 60657 United States +1 773 752 7837 x215 |
Being the most refined of the Alternative Shopping Complex shops, wannabe street kids are less likely to be seen amongst the eclectic jewelry on display here. A helpful and friendly staff, an innovative variety of silver and gemstone jewelry, as well as a collection of Fossil watches are positive points. Browsers are welcomed and will not get the questionable looks that may be drawn at the other stores nearby. Review © 2007, Wcities |

You don't have get married to shop here |
1056 W Belmont Avenue Chicago, IL 60657 United States +1 773 271 1300 |
This resale shop buys end-of-the-season and damaged or soiled items from the large department stores around town, cleans them, and passes the value onto the customer. This is more of a bargain shopper's palace than any Salvation Army-style resale shop. Everything is arranged on easily accessible racks and shelves throughout the spacious showroom floor. The difference can be found in the proliferation of brand names that you might find at Marshall Fields or Bloomingdale's. The shop handles every type of clothing, including mostly new men's, women's and children's clothes and shoes. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located in Lakeview near Wrigley Field, this caters to those who want to relive, or pretend to relive, those 1970s psychedelic head trips. Besides the overpowering selection of go-go boots, dresses, wigs, bell bottoms, jumpsuits, jewelry, and bright leisure suits, the shop also carries a wide assortment of shoes, poodle skirts, tube tops, and socks. The kicker has got to be the large stock of acid wash denim. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Gourmet Fixin's |
3440, North Southport Avenue Chicago, IL 60657 United States |
Winston's Market pulls double duty as both a place to eat and a place to buy groceries. So while you're out running errands with kids in tow, you can grab a nice sandwich and a cup of coffee for yourself and a delish pb&j sandwich for the young'uns before stocking up on gourmet ingredients. There's the roast-beef panini, sun-dried tomato tapenade, fresh salads where you specify the ingredients, and much more. A note of caution: family friendly doesn't mean that pets are allowed - they're not. Review © 2007, Wcities |
