Restored rail hub, now a landmark |
47 West Polk Street Chicago, IL 60605 United States +1 312 554 8100 |
One of the most evocative landmarks in town, this 1885 Romanesque-Revival building designed by Cyrus Eidlitz caps the tree-lined Printer's Row warehouse district. Once the place where many visitors and immigrants first set foot on Chicago soil, Dearborn Station is now mainly a collection of offices. But this restored building, with its red brick exterior and marbled lobby, looks beautiful and new. Admittedly, there isn't much to see on the inside, but the romance that used to hang around rail stations still lingers here. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Grant Park memorial |
901 South Michigan Ave Chicago, IL 60605 United States +1 312 744 7487 |
The question was not whether General John Logan should have a memorial erected in his honor. Rather, the question was, "Which moment in his life should we honor?" He could be celebrated for his role as an Illinois congressman, or for his efforts to make Memorial Day a national holiday. Sculptor Augustus Saint Gaudens chose, instead, to celebrate his heroism. He depicted General Logan seated on his horse holding the opposition's flag after going behind enemy lines to win a Civil War battle. This is one of several statues in Grant Park that are illuminated at night. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Architectural Landmark |
s Gravelandseveer 3 & 4 Chicago, IL 1011 KM United States +1 312 326 1480 http://www.glessnerhouse.org |
When architect Henry Hobson Richardson designed a 27-room home for John and Frances Glessner in 1885, he created quite a stir. With its oak-paneled English arts interior and rustic granite exterior flanked by a central courtyard, this home was a sophisticated redefinition of American architecture. The home was the subject of a $850,000 renovation, but nearly all the furnishings are original family appointments. Guided tours available. See website for visitor info. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Lakefront city park |
331 E Randolph Street Chicago, IL 60601 United States +1 312 742 7648 http://www.chicagoparkdistrict... |
Grant Park stretches from the Museum Campus at Lake Shore Drive and Roosevelt Road all the way north to the Prudential building, with Columbus Drive on its west side and the lake on its east. At one time, this stretch of land was undeveloped and a prime target for builders. However, department store magnate Montgomery Ward did not want the lake view from his Michigan Avenue office obstructed, so he successfully lobbied the city to create Grant Park. In the summer months, the grounds bloom with rose gardens, and the famous Buckingham Fountain springs to life. The Petrillo Band Shell is home to the Grant Park Music Festival and also hosts such events as Jazz Fest and Blues Fest. Perhaps the park is most famous for The Taste of Chicago, a culinary festival which happens every year in late June and early July. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Tree-lined historic street |
57 West Polk St Between Congress Blvd and Polk St Chicago, IL 60606 United States |
So called because this stretch of Dearborn once housed a variety of publishing houses, Printer's Row is now a collection of shops, restaurants and finely restored buildings. This is a pleasant place for a stroll, as the turn-of-the-century buildings recall a bygone era. Stop inside the Printer's Row Hilton if you can. The building was recently restored to its former glory. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The Soldier Field Stadium was built in the 1920's as a memorial to American soldiers who had died in war. A world-class stadium, it is the home to the Chicago Bears football team. The stadium also hosts a varied number of events from concerts to bizarre events like tractor and truck pulls to ski-jumping off a 13-story platform. If you're in the area, check out the 250-foot granite wall sculpture in honor of the men and women who served in the American armed forces. The stadium conducts tours from 9a-5p, but only if prior reservations have been made. Review © 2007, Wcities |
