The Art Institute of Chicago Claude Monet's "Irises," Georges Seurat's "Sunday Evening on the Island of La Grande Jatte," Auguste Renior's "On the Terrace," Edward Hopper's "Nighthawks" and Grant Wood's "American Gothic" all reside in the Art Institute. And, while the Art Institute is famous for housing some of the world's finest Impressionist and post-Impressionist collections, it also offers several other treasures. The miniature room contains replicas of palaces and mansions, while the life-sized reconstruction of the Chicago Stock Exchange's original Trading Floor features some of architect Louis Sullivan's best work.

The Museum of Contemporary Art This museum specializes in works created after 1945. It offers paintings, sculptures and multimedia displays by many of the world's best-known modern artists, including Rene Magritte, Ed Paschke, Andy Warhol and Jeff Koons. The building itself, built in 1996, stands as one of the city's more interesting structures, with an outdoor sculpture garden facing Lake Michigan.

River North Galleries This warehouse district turned art district features both cutting-edge and traditional galleries, from the progressive work of Tony Berlant featured at Klein Art Works to work suitable for corporate boardrooms at Carl Hammer Galleries. Every Friday during the height of the cultural season, the River North galleries sponsor a T.G.I.F. festival, where the public is invited to view the art, chat with the artists and grab some free hors d'oeuvres.

Wicker Park Galleries Wicker Park is another emerging scene for artisans, with such venues as Gallery 203, Chez Louise Gallery and David Leonardis Gallery. Every fall, the neighborhood sponsors the Around the Coyote festival, which showcases modern art and performance art.

The popularity of this arts festival has exploded in recent years because the Wicker Park neighborhood itself, at one time an artist's Bohemia, has been gentrified. Taking its name from the building at the corner of Milwaukee, Damen and North Avenues that resembles a howling canine, the festival focuses on a diverse variety of arts and artists. Many types of painting and art are on display, as well as fashion design, film, poetry and dance.

This traditional and conventional gallery nonetheless often features work of a more progressive vein. The gallery's eponymous owner is nationally known for discovering unknown artists and as an "Outside Art" expert. Popular exhibitions have included "A Dream Is but a Dream of All the Dreams Ever Dreamed," a display of the paintings and drawings of John Snyder. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the work available.
