Every weekend, the people of Christchurch head for market day at the Arts Centre, to soak up its charm and relaxed atmosphere. In the summer, crowds swell to over 20,000. Alongside the many live performers, colourful stalls set up in the Market Square offer a dazzling variety of arts and crafts, from handmade candles to hammock chairs. There is also an International Food Fair, with stalls selling inexpensive food from Thailand to Lebanon. The market spills out onto Worcester Boulevard, where local artists and woodcarvers have their works on show along the Arts Centre's exterior walls.

This rail crossing, from Christchurch to Greymouth on the West Coast, is one of the world's most spectacular alpine trips. The train rushes west along the Canterbury Plains, then weaves its way through the stunning Southern Alps. It climbs along cliffs high above the Waimakariri River and crosses five viaducts--the highest is 147 metres long and 73 metres high. The highest point on the line is 737 metres above sea level and in winter snow can lie alongside the track.

While the University Bookshop is the main provider of textbooks for Canterbury University courses, it is by no means a shop exclusively for students. One hundred years ago, this building housed a butchery complete with slaughterhouse. Today, the slaughterhouse no longer exists but the butchery remains, with three generations of the Verkerk family providing traditional European style butchery. Alongside their mouth-watering selection of salami, continental sausages and ham, Verkerks sells traditional Dutch groceries and Italian breads, Canterbury raised beef (smoked or roasted), specialist Asian cuts, and gourmet meats such as Ostrich. The building has undergone a recent face-lift with the eastern wall now featuring a tiled mural inspired by the works of celebrated Dutch artist Piet Mondrian.
