Held in the north of Christchurch's beautiful Hagley Park during Labour weekend, this annual exhibition celebrates the city's love affair with gardens, with four days of demonstrations, talks and competitions. It is a huge event, with more than 100 local retail outlets, clubs and societies taking part, something to get any garden enthusiast's mouth watering. Experience the Delights of an Idyllic Past |

Established in 1998, this lively carnival is an annual celebration of an idyllic past. Beginning with a procession of around 100 pre-1920s motorcars, penny-farthings and folk dressed in period costume, the carnival proceeds to the pleasant surrounds of North Hagley Park. Here, the main event begins, with plenty of amusements and entertainment, including penny-farthing and Clydesdale wagon rides, an Edwardian fashion parade and picnic, barbershop choir, and Punch and Judy show. Experience Christchurch in full bloom. For a city internationally renowned as the Garden City, this annual event is a true celebration of its floral excellence. This upcoming show will feature more than 30 events in various venues around the city. There are some dazzling displays, including the Christchurch Cathedral floral carpet, where volunteers construct a living carpet down the aisle of the church. There is great family entertainment at the Botanic Gardens Big Day, and the flower fairy's magical garden. This Christchurch to Akaroa cycling event, is open to both mountain and road bikes. Competitors can enter as either an individual, a team of two or four. The 100 kilometre course is both challenging and scenic and includes extremely fast downhill sections and lung busting uphill climbs. Riders start at Cathedral Square and head up Colombo Street, climb the historic roads of the Port Hills, before descending into Akaroa and the finish line. Run by the Christchurch Civic Music Council, this is New Zealand's most prestigious and well-established music performance competition. The heats and semi-finals are held in December of each year, where a quality field of aspiring young talent is whittled down to three finalists, who then compete the following March with the backing of the Christchurch Symphony. The standard is extremely high and the finals are always a great occasion. The competition alternates between piano and orchestral instruments according to the year. Christchurch locals celebrate summer with a grand festival of free entertainment, from small lunchtime concerts to major events. Starting with New Year's Eve celebrations, SummerTimes keeps on entertaining audiences for more than two months. Some highlights include the Teddy Bears' Picnic, the Summer Theatre Season of Strawberry Fields, Melt, Opera at the Movies and Classical Sparks, plus lunchtime concerts every Friday and a series of brass and pipe band concerts. Since its inception in 1997, this annual bookfest has been growing in stature and reputation.
