This fun little shop features an array of funky knick-knacks, antiques and second-hand clothing, and is located deep in the heart of Christchurch's famous High Street. The front of the store is packed to over-flowing with desirable collectibles, such as "kiwiana" from the 1940s and 50s, including such gems as Edmonds Baking Tins, velvet paintings and, of course, Buzzy Bees. In the rear of the store, the racks are jammed full of second-hand retro clothing, and if you have the time and patience to search through it all, there are some great deals to be discovered. Weird and wonderful |
221 Tuam St Central City Christchurch 8001 New Zealand +64 (0)3 377 1772 |
With its barred windows, stuffed animal heads, 18th-century furniture, and railway clocks, this place would look more at home on London's Portobello Road. However Portobello Antiques also stocks New Zealand antiques--perhaps behind that church pew, or beneath that weathervane, or alongside that pinball machine, lurks a kauri sideboard or dresser. Allow yourself plenty of time to rummage through all the weird and wonderful things. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Hedged in amongst the modern-day buildings of inner city Christchurch, just a few minutes stroll from the Square, stands the well-maintained, wooden Shand's Emporium building. Built in 1860, this unassuming but enchanting building is typical of the simple wooden structures that were first erected in colonial Christchurch. At one time a solicitor's office, the green-painted Shand's Emporium now contains several shops, including a delightful antique shop. Interesting photographs of the building in the early days, adorn the staircase walls. Review © 2007, Wcities |
