Premier department store for gifts and fashion |
City Mall City Central Christchurch 8001 New Zealand +64 (0)3 379 7400 |
Founded in 1872, "Ballys" is Christchurch's longest-established department store and has an unparalleled reputation for quality goods and services. Aimed at the more conservative end of the fashion, craft, cosmetics and home wares markets, the store serves both locals and visitors, with a souvenir department and worldwide delivery available. Here the spaciousness and subdued décor on both floors make shopping a soothing experience--except during the February and August sales. Then you will find the well-heeled of Christchurch jostling elbow to elbow in a rather poorly restrained frenzy! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Compact and convenient |
Corner Riccarton and Waimairi Roads Upper Riccarton Christchurch 8004 New Zealand +64 (0)3 348 6993 |
The Bush Inn Centre has around 30 retailers, the major ones being the Woolworths supermarket, The Warehouse, and Deka. Around half of the remainder are popular chain stores, leaving a number of shops found nowhere else, which give the mall its individual character. These include an immensely popular butcher and an equally popular hairdresser--which must be one of the cheapest in Christchurch! If you require the services of even more stores, the mall is set right in amongst the extensive retail community of Upper Riccarton. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Plenty of shopping out west |
418 Main South Road Hornby Christchurch 8004 New Zealand +64 (0)3 349 7288 http://www.hornbymall.co.nz |
The recently redeveloped Hornby Mall, a medium-sized suburban shopping complex in the western suburbs of Christchurch, is home to 40 specialty shops. Of these the major tenants are New World Supermarket, The Warehouse, Briscoes and Deka. During the school holidays there is usually plenty of entertainment for the kids, with regular children's stage acts and promotions. Otherwise you can take the family to the three-cinema complex upstairs. Parking is a tad chaotic, so be wary if you are unfamiliar with the surrounds. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Fashion & Style |
189 Papanui Rd Merivale Christchurch 8001 New Zealand +64 (0)3 355 9692 http://www.merivalemall.co.nz |
Once of average size, Merivale Mall is now dwarfed by many of its counterparts. Having run out of space in which to expand, this complex concentrates on what it does well--fashion. Leading off a spacious and elegantly marbled atrium, you will find a range of (mainly women's) fashion stores in the mid- to upper-price range. The queen of them all is Quinn's, a Mecca for the style-conscious women of Merivale and Fendalton. Other outlets include a Fresh Choice supermarket with an excellent wine section. Picturesque Spanish colonial-style mall |
Between Armagh and Gloucester Streets Central City Christchurch 8001 New Zealand +64 (0)3 379 9629 (Chrischurch Information Centre) |
The restored electric tram regularly clatters down the length of historic New Regent Street, offering a sense of what the city was once like. Beautifully renovated Spanish Mission style facades line both sides of the street, overlooking cafes, restaurants and interesting specialty boutiques. There is plenty of outside seating, providing places to lean back, admire the architecture and absorb the atmosphere of the gracious city that once was. Apart from the tram, the street has been closed off to vehicle traffic, making it the perfect place to linger and relax. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Stores and services |
55 Main North Road Papanui Christchurch 8005 New Zealand +64 (0)3 352 6535 |
With 70 shops, you might expect this mall to feel impersonal. However, Northlands manages to maintain a real relationship with the community, by providing not only a good range of retail stores, but also a number of services, like postal facilities and a cinema. The stores, including big players: Farmers and Pak 'n Save (supermarket), flank a long corridor that runs north to south. For a break in your travels, there are two good cafes as an alternative to the food court in the middle of the mall. Review © 2007, Wcities |

If you have a diverse shopping list, chances are you will be able to find everything you need under one roof at this popular suburban shopping complex. Inside, it is light and spacious beneath the enormous palm trees that name the mall. Two stores dominate--an excellent Big Fresh supermarket and the Kmart department store--but there are over 80 others including the satellite stores situated around the car park. Refresh yourself at the food court while admiring the marvellous feature fountain. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Self-contained and central |
555 Colombo St Christchurch 8001 New Zealand +64 (0)3 379 7190 http://www.southcity.co.nz |
The only self-contained mall with a supermarket within the "four avenues," which define the central city, the South City Centre is often a very busy place. Amongst the approximately 50 stores, there is a range of the popular chain stores, dominated by the Warehouse and a New World supermarket. But there are some independent businesses as well--for a taste of local seafood head for the excellent open-plan fishmongers. Anyone shopping with children under the age of six will appreciate the fenced adventure playground located near the food court. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A fabric, craft, and home interiors superstore of Australian origin, this store is heaven for creative sewers and decorators. A large mezzanine with every imaginable craft item, from zips to stencils, is suspended above a vast floor of home accessories, and fashion, curtain, and upholstery fabrics. Spotlight covers the cheaper end of the market, and you often get more than you pay for. Before buying that expensive curtain fabric, check first whether a container load ended up here at a fraction of the price! Review © 2007, Wcities |

New Zealand budget chain store |
South City Mall City Central Christchurch 8001 New Zealand +64 3 366 6013 |
The budget-goods chain, The Warehouse, is regarded in New Zealand with a certain affection, somehow it manages to provide people with items they need, before they realise they need them. Stacked high in rows throughout this cavernous store you will find a mind-boggling range of New Zealand-made and imported goods. There are toys, home wares, grocery items, garden equipment, furniture, through to compact discs, computer software and cellular phones. The quality can be surprisingly good for the price. Other Christchurch branches are at Barrington, Bush Inn, Hornby, Linwood, and Papanui. Review © 2007, Wcities |
