This fun-filled festival is held each February in the beautiful surrounds of North Hagley Park, showcasing the tastes and flavours from throughout the Canterbury Region and accompanied by the music of accomplished local artists. All the high profile vineyards are represented, including Pegasus Bay and Waipara Springs from the valleys in the north, and established vineyards like St Helena from central Canterbury. The food styles are infinitely varied and are supplied by prominent local cafes, hotels and small ethnic food-stall operators, as well as regional food producers such as Akaroa Salmon. Experience Christchurch in full bloom. For a city internationally renowned as the Garden City, this annual event is a true celebration of its floral excellence. This upcoming show will feature more than 30 events in various venues around the city. There are some dazzling displays, including the Christchurch Cathedral floral carpet, where volunteers construct a living carpet down the aisle of the church. There is great family entertainment at the Botanic Gardens Big Day, and the flower fairy's magical garden. Also, garden enthusiasts can tour some of Canterbury's prized gardens for a practical demonstration of flower power.

Christchurch locals celebrate summer with a grand festival of free entertainment, from small lunchtime concerts to major events. Starting with New Year's Eve celebrations, SummerTimes keeps on entertaining audiences for more than two months. Some highlights include the Teddy Bears' Picnic, the Summer Theatre Season of Strawberry Fields, Melt, Opera at the Movies and Classical Sparks, plus lunchtime concerts every Friday and a series of brass and pipe band concerts. Events are held outdoors and, best of all, they are free.

If you go down in the woods on this day you are sure of a big surprise. Every year the Children's Day Picnic is held in leafy North Hagley Park. Fun activities of all shapes and sizes are available for the youngsters (and not-so-young) who turn up for lunch to enjoy good company and live children's entertainment. There is music, comedy, puppetry and magic, all in an atmosphere that is always really special. Admission is free but you have to pay and park. See their website for further details.
