Waimakariri River

River of cold rushing water
Between the Rakaia and Hurunui Rivers
Christchurch 8252
New Zealand
+64 (0)3 365 3828 (Canterbury Regional Council)
Rising in the snowfields and glaciers of the Southern Alps, the "Waimak" (as locals call it) was used by generations of Maori as a route to the West Coast where they gathered the prized pounamu, or greenstone (jade). The river's name means "River of Cold Rushing Water" and even in high summer the chilly, glacial origins of the turquoise water are obvious. The braided course of the river is popular with fishing enthusiasts and boaties. Where it flows into the Pacific Ocean, the river has formed the large Brooklands Lagoon, an important habitat for birds.
