Do NOT Ask For Coffee |
Kronprinsensgade 5 Copenhagen 1114 Denmark +45 3315 3562 http://www.perchs-the.dk |
Surrounded by Copenhagen's thickest concentration of über-trendy designer fashion stores, this tea shop stands as if untouched by nearly 170 years of history. The interior has been kept largely unchanged since the shop's opening in 1834, and, indeed, the quality, wide selection and intimate atmosphere do not call for a change. This is where the finest kinds of teas in all of Denmark can be bought. A C Perch imports rare teas from the very best plantations around the world, and here the making of tea is a supreme art form. You can basically buy every kind of tea, including, in the last few years, the more modern fruit teas. The tea is weighed as in the old days, with lead weights on proper scales. Apart from the magnificent selection of teas, you can also buy teapots in all sizes, as well as cakes and marmalades to suit your afternoon teatime. The service is remarkably friendly; do not hesitate to ask what tea would be most appropriate for any specific occasion, and allow yourself to be educated on how exactly to make it so that it is just right. Just remember: do NOT ask for coffee! The story goes that you will be kindly asked to leave if you do... Review © 2007, Wcities |

Nikolaj Plads 9 Copenhagen 1067 Denmark +45 33 14 81 81 |
Ann Wiberg is a Danish fashion designer who has lent her name to her own shops in Copenhagen. One of them is situated just by Nikolaj Udstillingsbygning. All of the clothes in the shop are designed by Ann herself and manufactured in a sewing factory in Paris. The shop gets new deliveries in from France at least every other month. There is a very broad selection of clothes, ranging from ordinary, everyday trousers to classy dresses for near-royal purposes. The prices are reasonable, considering the fine quality of the designs. Ann Wiberg uses her imagination and often brings new, extraordinary ideas to life in her clothes. In May and November the collections are displayed to the public at a fashion show. This shop has a twin branch on Larsbjørnsstræde, a street on the opposite side of Strøget. Here the fashion is, like the clientele, a bit younger and more extreme. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Alternative Copenhagen |
Prinsessegade Copenhagen Denmark +45 32 95 6507 http://www.christiania.org |
Founded in 1971, Christiania is an anarchic part of Denmark. It was set up as a direct result of the student uprisings of the 1960s. Today, Christiania is home to some 750 outsiders and is a free city, which means that it is not part of the city, the country, or the European Union. It is a lively place and there are always lots of activities happening. One of the original ideas was to have a 'no car town', but nowadays the inhabitants have trouble finding parking spaces outside the district because of the multitude of tourist buses. Visitors should be aware that the sale of drugs is legal here, and that dogs run around the streets freely. Guided tours can be arranged. Review © 2007, Wcities |

All In One |
Rosenvængets Allé 7A Copenhagen 2100 Denmark |
What do you call a bar, a delicatessen and hairdresser under one roof? Well, right, a circus! And that's exactly what the owner chose to call this peculiar Trinity of shops on Rosenvængets Allé. Standing in front of the complex you won't know what to think, but once you step inside you will discover that there is logic behind this Monty Pythonism. As you enter the delicatessen, which is in the middle of the Circus complex, a smell of something southern meets you. Is it the sausages? Is it the cheese? The hams, the olives, the open wines or just the pure smell of handpicked quality? It is obvious that in this house food is treated with all the respect it deserves, and the customers love it. The row of delicacies seems never-ending and the service is nice and careful. Remember to order a sandwich before you go next door to the hairdresser on the far right. Sit down, relax and treat yourself to a haircut that is oh so Copenhagen. The hairdresser is young and charming, and knows your hair better than you probably do. 45 minutes later you are ready to walk to the other end of Circus where your lunch date is waiting at the bar. Karsten Lauritsen designs and produces furniture in wood and metal, and Mette Saabye designs original ornaments and earrings, whilst Bettina Schori works with glass and metal and produces watches. In addition they sell things made by clothes designers, potters and bag designers. Every Friday a smoking bar is held in the basement, where it is possible to have a longer chat with the designers. Sparkling Jewellery |
Niels Hemmingsens Gade 4 Copenhagen 1153 Denmark +45 33 93 73 77 |
Dyrberg/Kern is a very popular brand of jewellery among Danish women. The real name should be 'bijouterie' everything in the shop is costume jewellery with imitation stones. The quality is really high, though, everything is cast and plated with a thin layer of silver or gold. The reason for the popularity is that even though everybody is aware of the jewellery being fake, it looks a million dollars anyway. The women wearing it feel good, the more so because the prices are not very high. Mainly young people are attracted to this brand, but it really suits any person who wants to create a little glamour. The walls of the shop are naked and white, creating a splendid environment for viewing everything. The style of the jewellery varies, but generally it is romantic, almost princess-like, even going towards the extraordinary, almost grotesque! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Cheap Fashion Clothes |

Et Toi is a very trendy fashion shop for young people, located on Strøget, Denmark's most popular shopping street. The interior of the shop is worth noticing - soft pastel shades along with a very kitschy chandelier. This is not the place to find clothes that will last for decades, but be sure to be on the latest wave of fashion if you by anything here. The shop primarily sells clothes in the popular Danish brand Nice Girl, whose collections fill up the long and narrow shop. It is a very 'here and now' brand, and very inexpensive. Filmhusets video- og boghandel is a book and video shop connected to Cinemateket, the new cinema of the Danish Film Institute. Cinemateket is situated just opposite Kongens Have (the King's Garden), the beautiful park with Rosenborg Castle in it. The cinema complex, including the book and video shop, is an interesting piece of modern interior design, so you should take a look while you are there. The speciality is - of course - books on the subject of film. The selection is wide, but most of the books are in English. Public Transport in Copenhagen Harbour |
Nordre Toldbod og Det Kongelige Bibliotek Copenhagen 1259 Denmark |
Havnebussen is an alternative to the yellow public buses, which often run late on the busy streets of Copenhagen. The harbour is not heavy with traffic, and because of that a route has been created that crosses down through Copenhagen Harbour, from shore to shore. Havnebussen is comfortable and the sights from it are often fantastic. It shouldn't be used as tourist transport at very busy times, though, as it functions as a means of transport for a lot of busy Copenhagen commuters. Centre of all Train Traffic in Denmark |
Banegårdspladsen 4 Copenhagen 1577 Denmark +45 3314 0400 |
Hovedbanegården, the Grand Central Station, is the centre for all train traffic in Copenhagen as well as Denmark. From Central Station, you are able to travel to the forest as well as the beaches with the S-train. You will also find departures to most of the bigger cities of Europe, on ordinary trains. In 1911, the Central Station moved to its present location on Vesterbrogade, just across the road from Tivoli. The man behind this grand building was DSB's chief architect Henrik Wench. At the beginning of the 1990s, several fancy shops and cafés opened up in the arrival and departure hall, which lead to the creation of the shopping centre Hovedbanen. The ambience is very relaxed at Central Station, at any time of the day or year, with all kinds of people. Even the Royal Family have their own apartment at the Central Station, where they wait for their train to depart. There is a clock just inside the entrance; many people make arrangements to meet 'under the clock'. Review © 2007, Wcities |

1.8 million people live in the Danish capital city. This means a third of all Danes live in Copenhagen, and also that almost half of all the bus traffic in Denmark is carried out here, on the yellow HT-buses. On a normal weekday, about 8,20,000 people ride on 16,000 bus journeys in the capital region. That means 4 million hours of driving by HT in a year. There are 9,800 bus stops in Copenhagen, 1,500 buses and 3,600 conductors. A normal HT-bus is 12 metres long and 2.5 metres wide. It has room for 70 passengers, of whom half may sit down. A link-bus is 18 metres long and has room for 110 passengers. On the company's web-site, you can find direct information on the particular bus you wish to take, by checking yourself or sending in your details. You will also see information about special announcements, such as delays, or get help with finding the right bus you want, with a map of its exact route. You can even buy tickets and travel cards. There's information on how much tickets cost and where you could buy them. You can also read about the subscription service, and about how you can get your travel cards sent directly home to you each month, possibly with a discount. Please note that the web pages are only in Danish. Tickets can also be bought on the buses, and at some supermarkets. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Kleins Boghandel is a traditional Danish bookshop, containing about 80% in books and the rest in stationery. It is the largest of its kind on Frederiksberg, the calm part of Copenhagen with all the stately-looking villas west of Søerne (The Lakes). Fiction and non-fiction are well represented here. Whether it is the newest novel from your favorite author or a good cookbook you are looking for, you should be able to find it here. It is a very old bookshop, founded in the nineteenth century, nicely organized and with a good atmosphere. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Købmagergade 62 Copenhagen 1150 Denmark +45 33 32 80 70 |
On Købmagergade, one of Copenhagen's best pedestrian shopping streets, you will find the trendy Lisbeth Dahl shop. Incidentally, Lisbeth Dahl is the name of one of Denmark's most famous actresses, but actually this shop has nothing to do with her. In any case, Lisbeth Dahl, the shop, is worth a visit, as it is packed with great things for your home. Upstairs, you will find quirky lamps, beautiful vases and kitsch candle-holders. Downstairs, there are things for the kitchen - washing-up brushes like you have never seen before and other fun stuff. Keep in mind that what you buy here will be the latest in interior fashions, which is why you will probably find the shop a bit expensive. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Louise Grønlykke is a qualified goldsmith who opened her own shop in 1994 on this side street to Kongens Nytorv, in the center of Copenhagen. She has won prizes for her designs and the Queen of Denmark has worn her jewellery. Louise Grønlykke's specialty is silver jewellery covered with 24-carat gold, as pure gold would be too heavy to wear comfortably. This is combined with precious stones. The designs are inspired by engravings from ancient Japanese weapons and unintentionally old Danish runic inscriptions. These are very interesting collections indeed. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Noa Noa is a popular Danish brand, sold in this shop on Strøget. The style at Noa Noa is easily recognisable, with its loose-fitting dresses and blouses, coats, hats and corduroy trousers. Other specialities are eastern-inspired fabrics combined with the simplicity of the Nordic cuts of the clothes. 'Noa Noa' is synonymous with harmony, comfort and casualness; the materials are kept as natural as possible, and that closeness to nature is clearly what the shop wishes to express to customers. Second-Quality Royal Porcelain |
Søndre Fasanvej 9 Copenhagen 2000 Denmark +45 38 34 1004 http://www.royalcopenhagen.dk |
The Royal Copenhagen porcelain plant was started in 1775 by a chemist. Later the Royal Family bought some shares in the company, but now the factory is owned by Carlsberg. Royal porcelain is one of contemporary Denmark's most traditional products, which put Denmark on the world map already in 1790 with the Flora Danica set. The set is the most expensive in the series, with its gilded edge and motifs from the Danish flora, and today it is bought by Danes as well as Americans, Japanese amongst others. At Søndre Fasanvej's factory outlet only second-quality goods are sold, and here you might be lucky and find parts up to 50% below ordinary prices. If you want to buy perfect-quality Royal porcelain, you have to visit the store on Amagertorv (Strøget), which stocks all sets in perfect quality. Review © 2007, Wcities |
