Over the past ten years, Copenhagen has reinvented itself and made its name as a metropolis in Europe. It has undergone an amazing metamorphosis in a wide variety of fields: design, fashion, media, art, film, shopping, music, advertising, and, last but not least, food and drink. With CPH international airport only 20 minutes away from the centre, and with the recently-completed Øresund Bridge to Malmö, Sweden, many Copenhageners now feel closer to capitals such as Stockholm, Berlin and London than to other major cities in Denmark.

As the city has become more international so has its palate. A few years ago Asian, Middle-Eastern and South American food was off-territory for most Copenhageners but now people of all ages sushi, nasi-goreng, tom yum goong and couscous their way through their dinner appointments. Warehouses have been turned into über-trendy restaurants, old shops have been transformed into elegant bars, and everywhere you turn new cafés and clubs are opening up.

Østerbro

Brunch at mocha-heavenly Amokka and rediscover the art of coffee brewing. Lunch at Circus and get a haircut on the go in this post-modern kombi-complex. Dine at Guldandens art-deco veranda or reserve your table at Brasseriet for a young and refreshing experience. Innovative food is served at La-Kajen, designed by architect Jørgen Utzon of Sydney Opera House fame; one of Copenhagen's most expensive but best Indian restaurants, Tabak, is also in the area. Schnappsa are enjoyed in the company of Kruts Karport's impressive collection of malt whiskies and your night ends at Park, dancing and sipping drinks with Copenhagen's young things.

Nørrebro

Your Nørrebro experience begins at Sankt Hans Torv where your latte is served at retro-futuristic Pussy Galore or at classy Sebastopol. This lively neighbourhood is packed with cafés, but amongst them don't miss Floras Coffee Bar, Kaffesalonen and Props, all located around Blågårdsgade. Evening dining includes excellent Indian food at Kate's Joint, French cosmopolitan cuisine at De Gaulle, vegetarian and Middle Eastern food at Picnic and Japanese futuristic fusion dishes at Propaganda. Rust is the name of your final destination; Nørrebro's number one nightclub gives you every reason to love this up-beat part of town.

Vesterbro

Home to art galleries, student bars, a red-light district and ethnic restaurants – it all comes together in Copenhagen's most wanted neighbourhood. Autobahn, Bang&Jensen and Ideal Bar prove that what was once a working-class district is now something much more. Vesterbro is the official ‘capital of curry' – the best Asian restaurants include The Indian Dining House, Thai Esan, Shezan, Nam Thip and the not-to-be-underestimated Carry Home. For modern French cuisine try Kamels on Sundevedsgade or if you feel first-class have your stopover at Formel B – you won't regret it.

Double Happiness specialises in daring Chinese food from the Szechuan province whilst Passagens Spisehus offers the best deer and game roasts in town. Club your night away at Vega and if you still want more after 5am, head for Lasses for a last good-night drink.

Frederiksberg

This pleasant, Parisian-style neighbourhood is Copenhagen's little theatreland and most bars and restaurants here come alive just before or just after show hours. Kellerdirk and Promenaden are all located around Frederiksbergs Allé and known for a good atmosphere with improvising waiter/actors. Modern Italian food is served at La Buca or at delicious Fiasco and rustic French de pays courses await you at L'Olivier. For a classic romantic night dine at La Gastronomique in Frederiksbergs Gardens or try The Princess' Dining House for a France-meets-Tunisia hedonistic feast.

Christianshavn & Christiania

On Holmen, among torpedo halls and old military warehouses, lies the modern, London-inspired restaurant Base Camp which transforms into a nightclub after midnight. While waiting for tapas enjoy the view of the Copenhagen waterfront at Thorsen; or venture into Christiania's EU-free zone for beautiful vegetarian dishes at Morgen Stjernen or modern Scandinavian cuisine at friendly Loppen. Christanshavn is swarming with restaurants, bars and cafés – Era Ora is a superb Italian restaurant, perfect for business and pleasure, Kanalen represents France and there is good food and value for money at Bastionen&Løven. Have brunch at Wilder with the local architects and lunch at Café Oven Vande.

Pisserenden

This trendy shopping district is overflowing with cafés, restaurants and bars. For a gastronomic trip around the world try the Atlas Bar; frog-lovers socialise at L'Education Nationale and Flyvefisken tempts you with tasty Thai treats. Floss 's understated atmosphere draws artists and their friends from all over the city and Sabines Cafeteria is still one of the most authentic and popular cafés in Copenhagen.

Frederiksstaden

A handful of top-rated fine dining restaurants and bars are found on this peaceful side of town. On the Copenhagen waterfront, a few steps away from the Little Mermaid, lies the elegant Langelinie Pavilion, where quality, price and style go hand in hand. Media students and hipsters dine at Kartoteket whose Polish owner gave up his philosophy in gastronomic pleasures; Lai Hoos Cantonese kitchen is known to be our Princess Alexandra's (born in Hong Kong) favourite place. Copenhagen's first real wine bar Le Sommelier lies on Bredgade and around the corner KGB Restaurant and Vodka Bar serves genuine cold-war vodka and caviar.

Nørrevold

Nørrevold is young, hip and happening and the people who live here know it. Among bookshops and fashion stores lies Bankeråt, Nansensgade's most relaxed café. Further down the street minimalist Sticks 'n' Sushi practises the art of slow food, and for suave Spanish food try El Peron. Café Bisau plays Zouk-love with a twist of Paris and around the corner at the Lounge, media types order frozen margaritas. Summer afternoons are spent inside HC Ørstedsparken at Hacienda soaking up the sunshine and sipping Swedish cider. Nights are spent at post-everything Stereo Bar, ordering gin & tonics, CPH networking and kissing cheeks.

Inner City

Central Copenhagen's parade of world-class restaurants proves that its transformation from local to global player is complete. The excellent Kommandanten has earned two Michelin stars for spectacular French food; superb Restaurationen enjoys a single but big star and so does innovative Pierre André on Ny Østergade. If you are looking for less art but more smart, queue up outside stylish Konrad or hotspot Etcetera. Luxurious international cuisine is demonstrated at Kirk and also TyvenKokkenHansKoneOgHendesElsker belongs in the Inner City league of elegance. Café Europa on Amagertorv glows with plenty of glass and class; Sommersko is always a success and Zoo Bar, just across the road, is the favourite rendezvous of the city's shopping maniacs. As the sun sets, the restaurants fade away and the bars wake up. Tourists head for Nyhavn, teenagers shout Klaptræet, students go for The Student House, jazz lovers knock on La Fontaine, media types elevate to NASA and VIPs light their cigars at SAS Royal's cocktail bar.

Before you pack your suitcase, flash your passport or board your cruiser, remember that you can not leave Copenhagen without having tried a Danish hotdog and the Danish smørrebrød. It is a well-kept secret that the best hotdogs are served at the very far end of the Copenhagen waterfront and for smørrebrød try Amalie behind Amalienborg.

Good luck!

Amalienborg Palace

Residence of the Danish Royal Family
Amalienborgs Slotsplads
Copenhagen 1257
Denmark
Built by Frederik V to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the House of Oldenborg, Amalienborg consists of four palaces built around a square. These are Moltkes Palace (Christian VII's palace), Schackske Palace (Christians IX's palace and residence of Queen Margrethe and Prince Henrik), Levetzaus Palace (Christian VIII's palace and residence of Crown Prince Frederik) and Brockdorfske Palace (Frederik VIII's palace). Architect Niels Eigtved was heavily influenced by the rococo style. Of the four palaces, Moltkes Palace is considered the most outstanding. When Christiansborg burned down in 1794, the royal family moved to Amalienborg, since then it has been their official residence. The square is dominated by Saly's equestrian statue of Frederik V (1723-1766) which, together with the palace buildings, forms a breathtaking architectural ensemble. Lovers of the royal family flock to the square once a year to celebrate Queen Margrethe's birthday.

At Autobahn the testosterone levels have no limit; it is the perfect hideaway for the max urban generation that feels more secure on super highways than on the streets. Fly-boys and girls come here to hang out in comfortable Jaguar seats, to rest their feet on red-light-district tables from Paris and sip drinks to the James Bond soundtrack. Scalectrix races are held in genuine Monte Carlo fashion once a month; check at the bar for timings.

Bang og Jensen

Café with Good Breakfast
Istedgade 130
Copenhagen 1650
Denmark
+45 3325 5318
http://www.bangogjensen.dk/
Bang og Jensen is on Istedgade, the former red-light district of Copenhagen. The interior is fun and kitschy, and the ambience is friendly. Popular here are the ancient pinball machines and the table football. Most of the clientele at this café consists of the young and the trendy, especially young women. A speciality here is the breakfast, which is served all through the day until 6p. It is actually more of a brunch. The unique thing about it is that you are given a form, on which you fill in exactly how you want your food served. And there are many delicious things to choose from. At night, the café turns into a cocktail bar, and the bartender Ingeborg knows her job well. She has been practising for seven years at a trendy place in New York.

Bankeråt means 'Bankrupt'. Nevertheless, this café is not broke or going out of business. Very much alive and kicking, it gained its fame through some TV poetry sessions held here. Even though it is somewhat out of the way on Ahlefeldtsgade, it is frequented by a wide audience. The place has paintings on the walls and the atmosphere is pleasant.International dishes are served. The ingredients are mainly organic. The food is good and cheap enough to ensure that the customers come back time and again.

Founded in 1971, Christiania is an anarchic part of Denmark. It was set up as a direct result of the student uprisings of the 1960s. Today, Christiania is home to some 750 outsiders and is a free city, which means that it is not part of the city, the country, or the European Union. It is a lively place and there are always lots of activities happening. One of the original ideas was to have a 'no car town', but nowadays the inhabitants have trouble finding parking spaces outside the district because of the multitude of tourist buses. Visitors should be aware that the sale of drugs is legal here, and that dogs run around the streets freely. Guided tours can be arranged.

Copenhagen Harbour

The Harbour of Copenhagen
Nordre Toldbod 7
Copenhagen
Denmark
+45 3347 9999
The best way to see the harbour is by going on one of the Canal Tours. On these trips the tourist is presented with many sights that are located along the Copenhagen waterfront. Admire the castles including Christiansborg and Amalienborg, charming old areas like Nyhavn and Christianshavn, churches such as Holmens Kirke and Marmorkirken, and modern buildings like the headquarters of A. P. Møller or the Black Diamond. The harbour of Copenhagen stretches from Nordhavn and Frihavnen deep into the heart of the city. From as far back as the 1930s, the harbour has been strongly criticized. However, with newer initiatives, like the new building work at Frihavnen, the harbour is becoming a recreational area for the people of Copenhagen.

For a darkly clad Copenhagen new-wave punk of the early eighties, Floss was the center of the world. Someone said that the old regulars turned out to become either drug addicts or famous, or both. Today Floss still maintains its feel of being distinctively cool, despite the ageing crowd and the ever-playing early Stones records' apparent need of replacement. A lot can be said and has been said about Floss, as it is part of Copenhagen's history, and it is still a place where no one would ever care to pay attention to whether it is Monday afternoon or Saturday night.

Frederiksberg Have Park

Beautiful Park at Frederiksberg
Frederiksberg Allé / Allégade
Copenhagen 2000
Denmark
Frederiksberg Have is a labour of H.G.H. Scheel and J.C. Krieger in the early seventeenth century, around Frederiksberg Slot castle. The idea of creating this garden was Frederik IV's, inspired by his trips to Italy. The style is Baroque, with strict axes of symmetry. Times changed, in the eighteenth century and so did ideals. Romanticism was prime time, what with English country gardens considered the epitome of perfection. Such tendencies corrupted the strict Baroque style of Frederiksberg. The garden ponds were connected by a network of canals twisted into a maze. Today you see grottoes with wells, a Chinese pavilion, temples, the Norwegian House and the fountain right in front of Frederiksberg Slot. A rich variety of bird-life, all exotic visitors from the Zoo nearby. In spring and summer, admire the flowerbeds in full bloom. The park is open from 6a till sunset.

Holmen

Natural Area in the Heart of Copenhagen
Prinsessegade
Copenhagen 1436
Denmark
Holmen is a former military area, but when the navy pulled out in 1996, this big scenic area was opened to the public. The main entrance is at the end of Prinsessegade on Christianshavn. Another way to get to Holmen is to go by boat with the canal tours from Nyhavn or Gammel Strand. The big rigging-tower, a stone construction with a copper roof dating from 1749, is the landmark of Holmen and a part of the Copenhagen skyline. The Navy has resided on Holmen since 1690. Gunshots still thunder from Sixtus Batteriet at sunset and dawn. Cultural activities and artists have also moved into Holmen with the four art schools located there. Now an extensive residential building project is being carried out. It's nice to sometimes get away from the noise and stress of the big city. Try the restaurants along the harbour. Near the water, it is cool even on the hottest days. And from here you have a magnificent view over Amalienborg and Marmorkirken.

Kaffesalonen is a café situated by the Lakes, with a style reminiscent of the 'good old' 50s. Especially all the old adverts make you feel as if you were in an old film. The clientele consists mainly of locals, but in the summer when you can sit outdoors, you will find all sorts of people drop by. They serve a cheap breakfast from 8am, with fresh bread, eggs, jam and cheese. It is a nice place to start off the day, enjoying the view of the Lakes and the early joggers and dog-walkers. For lunch you can have a really Danish treat, as they have many kinds of smørrebrød. Dinners are Danish as well, although they also have international dishes.

They also have a small selection of intellectual classics in literature, and sometimes they organise poetry events and live acoustic performances. This is where you go if you like people looking at you from the street. The windows go from floor to ceiling, and the interior, designed especially for this café, is very trendy. The food here is delicious, experimental and not cheap. On weekends it is a popular place for brunch.

A well-known café-restaurant, this place entertains the concept of being as French as possible. Located in the centre of town, it is on the trendy shopping street of Larsbjørnstræde. There are tables for 40 guests or so; this is a little café with a very French atmosphere. A very popular place among the young and those who once were young - and of course also the Francophiles, always eager to tell you about the 'right' way to make baguettes. What could seem more natural than ordering a Croque Monsieur at a place like this? This classic toast with ham and cheese costs DKK39. For dinner the restaurant has an exclusive range of classic French dishes.

Langelinie

Copenhagen's Most Beautiful Area
Fra Esplanaden til Langeliniekajen
Copenhagen 2100
Denmark
This area could be described as the most beautiful in Copenhagen, and stretches from Esplanaden to Lystbådehavnen, the pier of Langelinie and Frihavnen. If you walk along the outer harbour of Copenhagen, you will be able to enjoy a breath of fresh air from Øresund. You will also pass Churchillparken with its English church, Frihedsmuseet (a landmark to World War II), the Gefion Fountain, the statues of Frederik IX and Princess Marie, Langeliniepavillionen restaurant, the Little Mermaid, and the Mylius-Erichsen Monument (to the people who died during the Greenland expedition 1906-07). Last but not least, is Frihavnen, with its warships and huge cruise liners, and recently a new housing and business district. From Langelinie you can see over to Holmen, where the yacht of the Royal Danish family, Dannebrog, usually lies anchored.

King Of Vino
Bredgade 63-65
Copenhagen 1260
Denmark

http://www.lesommelier.dk/
Sommelier is the French expression for a wine connoisseur, and this word gives away the kind of pleasures that await you at this restaurant. The currently chef is Monsieur Francis Cardenau, who, as former chef at Kommandanten in Copenhagen, was rated with two Michelin stars. Le Sommelier has now turned into one of the hottest restaurants in Copenhagen. Many come here because of the exceptionally good selection of wines. It is very much a French-inspired brasserie, with an atmosphere suitable for enjoying your choices of wine and dinner. About 800 different wines are featured on the wine list. There are also cigar lists, coffee lists and tea lists with excellent options in each category. The cuisine is French country-style with rich menus.

Loppen

Small Concert Club
Bådsmandstræde 43
Christiania
Copenhagen 1407
Denmark
+45 3257 8422
http://www.loppen.dk/
Loppen has in its fairly short history fought against violence, closedown threats and aversion, but has survived because of the strength of its non profit-making organisation. With its location in the free city of Christiania, just next to Pusher Street, these conflicts may come as no surprise. But Loppen has fought for the good reputation it has now achieved. The club aims at a minimum of four concerts a week, in which the style is rock as well as alternative and pop. Some famous names on the programme in the past have been The Verve, Smashing Pumpkins, Blur and The Cardigans. For bigger international concert names tickets can often be booked in advance through Billetnet or Sex Beat Records.

Nyhavn Old Harbour

Old harbour by Kongens Nytorv
Københavns havn til Kongens Nytorv
Copenhagen 1051
Denmark
Nyhavn docks were constructed in 1670 as an encouragement to trade and shipping, with a new canal going from the harbour of Copenhagen to Kongens Nytorv. Along the quays, houses have been built on the two different sides - one side contains Charlottenborg castle and blocks of flats, which belong to the bourgeoisie; and on the other side, there are houses built of timber, and picturesque buildings. Up to the 1950s and 1960s, many houses were situated here, but no so-called decent people would have ever ventured into this part of town after dark. In that very same period, poets praised that very quality of the old Nyhavn in songs like "Nu går våren gennem Nyhavn". Today, this side of Nyhavn has become fashionable. The quay has been turned into a pedestrian street and the harbour basin has been opened for old sailing ships. Excellent restaurants and cafés have opened; and especially in the summer, the quay is crowded with people having a good time. Today, if you are interested in buying property in this part of town, you have to be more than well-off. One of the most famous residents of Nyhavn was the fairy-tale writer Hans Christian Andersen. You can take tours departing from Nyhavn on the canal tour boats or Havnebussen to see many of the important sights around here, including Holmen.

The music is catching, contemporary and slightly cutting-edge. The people are well-dressed, in their mid to late twenties. Dancard is accepted.

Vesterbrogade 3

Denmark

One of the numerous restaurants which grace Tivoli, Promenaden is only open during the Tivoli season from April-September. In fact Promenaden is not a restaurant as such, but rather a four-in-one establishment made up of the Mezzo Bar, the Quick Wok Bar, a barbecue restaurant and a pasta bar. The Mezzo Bar serves drinks and features live music every night. Spare ribs grilled on lava stones are the speciality at the barbecue restaurant, where main courses cost upwards of DKK 110. The Quick Wok Bar and Pasta Bar are considerably cheaper.

http://www.restaurationen.com/
This highly esteemed restaurant works in connection with the seasons, with a menu that changes weekly. Restaurationen bakes its own bread and makes its own sausages and hams. The exciting cuisine with its many organic raw materials has been honored with one Michelin star. In the hall you'll find two thin partition walls with black-and-white photos of the restaurant's cooks. Inside, the restaurant has a high ceiling and distinguished paintings on the walls. The furniture is simple and stylish. The menu contains seven dishes in a sophisticated and French-inspired style. Prices vary, but are usually wallet-friendly. The Sommelier of the house composes a wine menu that usually costs a decent amount. Restaurationen has a splendid selection, with a collection of fine wines and many avecs, plus cigars.

On the fancy square of Sankt Hans Torv you will find Sebastopol, a big café that is quite popular amongst all the trendy students and young people of Nørrebro. In the summertime it can get really crowded, especially if you like to sit outdoors. The interior space is divided into two sections; one is the café and bar section and the other is the restaurant. The restaurant area has cloths on the tables, and reservation is a good idea. You can enjoy delicious three-course meals here. The café menu offers a lot of French and internationally inspired light meals for fair prices.

If you still write 'student' in those 'profession' boxes on landing cards, if you can still grind to 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' or just crave for a night in the company of young Freuds and Shakespeares and all their friends (who can't wait to become artists, film directors and superstar DJs), then this is your kind of place. Straight across the street from Regensen, one of Copenhagen's oldest and most prestigious halls of residence, lies Studenterhuset - with its beautiful ensemble of upcoming young men and women. The beer prices are low and the ambition level high. This is your shortcut to the soul of the Copenhagen student body. Ask for backgammon, chess or cards in the bar. The programme for each day of the week is different. It's Gays & Lesbians on Tuesdays, Exchange/Socrates students' day on Wednesdays, Live Jazz on Thursdays, and Post-Indie-Heavy-Gothic Rock on Fridays.

The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid
Langelinie
Copenhagen 1263
Denmark
Copenhagen's most famous tourist attraction, the Little Mermaid sits on a rock overlooking the harbour. Created by Edward Eriksen in 1913 who was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale. The model for the Mermaid was dancer Ellen Price. The statue's head was stolen in 1964 and although police hunted for several years, neither the perpetrator nor the head were found. The head has been replaced by a replica but jokers still occasionally try to saw it off.

Located on the old narrow street of Magstræde, this establishment is a charming little place with one selected menu (which changes every week) and a wine menu to match it. The old, slightly lopsided walls are painted white, matching the white tablecloths. The wine glasses are big and expensive and the smell of good cooking fills the air. Only one menu is available - take it or leave it - but you can be sure that it will be made of the season's best, most tempting products, put together in new and creative combinations. The five-course menu costs around DKK 400, and the matching wine menu DKK 425. There is a splendid selection of single malts and cigars. Everything is of the best quality, and is for those willing (and able) to pay for it.
