Contemporary plays and musicals |
9900 East Colfax Avenue Denver, CO 80010 United States +1 303 739 1970 www.aurorafox.org |
Located along a dilapidated portion of East Colfax Avenue that is surrounded by pawnshops, the Aurora Fox is a shining neighborhood jewel. A converted movie house, the 250-seat theater now serves as a stage for contemporary plays and lighthearted musicals. The main groups associated with the Fox are the Aurora Theatre Company, the Aurora Singers, and the Aurora Symphony. Most performances occur on the weekends and the Sunday matinees are very popular. During summer, the theater provides children's programs performed by the kids themselves. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Jewel of the neighborhood |
3317 East Colfax Avenue Denver, CO 80206 United States +1 303 322 2308 |
Opened in 1913 as a small movie house, this theater survived various incarnations, including a long stint as a porn house, before closing in the 1970s. In 1994 it was refurbished and restored but still retains its image as a gritty survivor in a rough neighborhood. The three-tiered theater now serves as a multi-purpose venue hosting a diverse group of national acts, emerging recording artists, and the hottest local bands. On occasions the Bluebird still doubles as a movie hall, showing cult classics and carrying the annual Sick and Twisted Animation Festival. The bar has an excellent selection of microbrews, along with the usual domestics. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Over the years, as the city's economy took flight to other areas, this 1907-built venue slipped into obscurity. Eventually, a local promoting company bought the aging structure, and after an extensive renovation, it reopened as the Fillmore Auditorium. Modeled after the legendary San Francisco venue, the Fillmore is enjoying a rebirth on Colfax and has achieved recognition as one of Denver's top venues, hosting a diverse array of acts from Bob Dylan to Vince Gill to Beck. Religion Is Music |
3263 South Broadway Denver, CO 80110 United States +1 303 788 0984 http://www.nipp.com/ |
The Gothic Theatre has an illustrious history. Started in the twenties, the theatre was more than just a movie theatre, it was a place to meet friends and family. It was also the first theatre in Denver to show talking movies. Today the grand art deco style of the theatre is still dominant and it has now been turned into a world-class music center. In keeping with the move, the Gothic has installed state-of-the-art sound and light systems, doing justice to visiting bands like The Rebirth Brass Band. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Drinks and music |
7 South Broadway Denver, CO 80209 United States +1 720 570 4500 http://www.hi-dive.com/ |
Sputnik is a crowded and trendy place. Noise and smoke rule the roost most of the time. Though the place is small and intimate, find crowds streaming in perpetually. The bartenders are prompt and service is good. The food takes its own time to show up. Booze is cheap and the music out of a jukebox makes the place even more noisier. Hi-Dive on the other hand is only for gigs and concerts. On show days the place simply rocks. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Denver's new home for music |
2240 East Buchtel Boulevard (The Ritchie Center) Denver, CO 80208 United States +1 303 871 2336 |
Located in the massive Ritchie Center, a sprawling 70 million dollar mass of copper, gold, and sandstone on the University of Denver campus, this arena is home to the school's basketball and hockey teams. But sports are not the only draw here. The university has partnered with mega-promoter Universal Concerts. Now the venue, which can hold 8,000 spectators, has become the city's newest home for popular national artists and touring events. For a sports arena the sound quality is surprisingly good, and the steeply graded seating offers good views from every angle of the auditorium. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Old Time theater revived |
935 East Colfax Avenue Denver, CO 80218 United States +1 303 831 9448 / +1 303 830 2525 |
The Ogden Theatre has greatly benefited from Denver's economic boom. Prior to 1995, this beautiful old movie house sat vacant along Colfax Avenue until a local concert promoter snatched it off the market, restored it to its former luster, and started hosting popular musical acts. Capitol Hill now pulsates with the latest in music, as the 1000 seat venue hosts a wide array of artists. Past performances have included the Smashing Pumpkins, Morphine, and James Taylor. The surrounding area can be sketchy, so ask a security guard for a late night escort if you are alone. Parking can be a nightmare. Review © 2007, Wcities |
