The mall is a mile-long, tree-lined promenade stretching through the heart of downtown. Bustling with street vendors, souvenir shops, clothing and jewelry stores, and a plethora of bars and restaurants, this energetic strip offers plenty of variety. The Denver Pavilions, at the entrance of the mall, is a new open air-shopping plaza filled with trendy chains, including the Denver edition of the Hard Rock Café. The D & F Tower, a 325-foot replica of St. Mark's campanile in Venice, graces the center of the mall. The Tabor Center adds to the shopping enthusiasm. Free shuttles provide transportation up and down the mall, allowing for convenient cross-town sightseeing.

From church to theater
1080 Acoma Street
Denver, CO 80204
United States
+1 303 623 0524
http://www.curioustheatre.org/
The Acoma Theater, located in a renovated old church, is home to such local performing companies as the Hunger Artists Ensemble and the Horse Cart Theater Company. The productions have earned five awards from the Denver Drama Critics Circle. A regular event is Radio Theatre Live, a reader's theater program held monthly. The theater houses a U-shaped balcony and two-story stage. Some of the views from the seats are poor. The theater's great atmosphere, however, more than compensates for its physical limitations.

Despite the name, this gallery is not exclusively a haven for traditional southwest art. You will find wide-ranging works from more than 12 resident and guest artists. Amongst the stark white walls can be found pottery, both decorative and functional, that is cast in unusual shapes and colors. There is also whimsically colored bug inspired jewelry, black and white landscape photography, paintings and ceramic wall sculptures. Shoppers in search of one-of-a-kind items favor this gallery.

Located in the Denver Performing Arts Complex, Boettcher Concert Hall is the main stage for the Colorado Symphony, directed by Marin Alsop, and Opera Colorado. The lovely venue contains 2,364 seats. Events are in the round, which poses a sound quality problem for those facing the backs of performers. Still, the hall's acoustics and architecture are phenomenal and it is a treat to see opera in the round. An adjacent parking garage takes the hassles out of city parking.

This establishment holds the oldest liquor license in the state, and it has been in operation for more than a century. Countless American icons have eaten here, including the legendary Wild Bill Cody. Be aware that the dining room walls are festooned with mounted animal trophy heads, which some diners find as uncomfortably distracting. The menu offers some eye-opening fare such as rattlesnake and fried alligator tail. If you prefer the traditional, tenderloin, T-bone and New York strip options abound. It is also the place to try Colorado favorites like elk and buffalo.

+1 303 295 9126
El Chapultepec, at first glance, is just another aging dive bar serving up traditional Mexican tastes on paper plates in downtown. But even though the great green chili draws plenty of patrons, it is the jazz performances that hold prominence in this place. Local as well as some national legends crowd into the small dining room filled with tacky vinyl booths and play just about every night of the year. Since the LoDo revitalization, this has become a trendy nightspot, so expect a big crowd. (This is a cash only establishment).

The weekend mariachi band and outdoor dining are the best aspects of a meal at El Noa Noa, but not because the food is so-so, but because it is so standard. The large open dining room moves with a constant frenzy and tends to be loud, especially if a band takes the stage. The standards are all here, including burritos, enchiladas and tacos. There is a new oasis of culture in the Rockies: the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, home to Opera Colorado and the Colorado Ballet. This brand-new, 2268-seat, $92 million venue is in downtown Denver. Named for local first lady of opera Ellie Caulkins (whose family donated a generous $7 million in return for naming rights), this giant opera house incorporates elements of the Denver Municipal Auditorium, which has occupied the space since the 19th century. The result is a unique design boasting state-of-the-art facilities and an imtimate feel, the perfect place to showcase Denver's local talent. Opera Colorado hosts 16 performances of 4 major operas, such as Carmen, Bellini's Norma, and The Abduction from the Seraglio, each year. Colorado Ballet also puts on 70 dance shows each season. Visitors to Denver, whether for business or pleasure, should consider an outing to the Ellie Caulkins Opera House during the season (September-April).

Located in the heart of Larimer Square, this establishment bills itself as an unofficial Denver landmark. Ask your server about Amelia, the resident ghost, rumored to roam the floors. It is just some of the lore that makes this establishment truly authentic. The menu is extensive. Pasta, salad, chicken and pizza dishes abound. The wine list is just as large too. Low-key nightly music takes place in the separate bar area, and patrons are often invited on stage to assist with the vocals. Microbrews are plenty.

Nestled in historical lower downtown Denver, Larimer Square occupies a one-block strip of the city's oldest street, dating back to the 1860s. Lined with Victorian brownstones, the area is now a thriving shopping and entertainment district, flowing with activity. Spend the morning combing the ever-changing boutiques and clothing stores; then head over to Tamayo for lunch. For the afternoon, take a self-guided walking tour of the historical district (brochures are located at the information gazebo). In the evening, dine at the Little Russian Café, Josephina's, or the Del Mar Crab House. Then, dance until the wee hours at Lucky Star.

Occupying a clover-colored store front and brimming with humble furnishings, including church pews, the Mead Street Station knows exactly what it takes to be a neighborhood meeting place: good conversation and good beer. Kick back to live jazz and blues on most nights. The place also has a healthy display of western paintings. For appetizers, try the delicious Mead St. Mussels and Artichoke Dip. There are many kinds of homemade soups including chili. The Dublin Fish and Chips are a must. Steaks, sandwiches, pastas and burgers are also available.

The owner of Mercury Café calls it a community center. The cafe exudes a vague hippie aura and serves as a restaurant, bakery, coffeehouse, dance club and concert hall. It is hard to pinpoint the exact style of this eclectic nightspot, serving up everything from Celtic and Cajun to theater and poetry. Swing and salsa bands are regulars on the second floor, which accommodates 350. The main dining room might feature a concert pianist one evening and a string quartet the next. The dinner menu offers salads, sandwiches, pasta dishes and steak.

+1 303 831 9448 / +1 303 830 2525
The Ogden Theatre has greatly benefited from Denver's economic boom. Prior to 1995, this beautiful old movie house sat vacant along Colfax Avenue until a local concert promoter snatched it off the market, restored it to its former luster, and started hosting popular musical acts. Capitol Hill now pulsates with the latest in music, as the 1000 seat venue hosts a wide array of artists. Past performances have included the Smashing Pumpkins, Morphine, and James Taylor. The surrounding area can be sketchy, so ask a security guard for a late night escort if you are alone. Parking can be a nightmare.

Whether you are in search of an old map for decorative wall purposes or for historic reasons, this antique cartography shop can probably satisfy your pursuit. It carries maps of the United States as well as individual state maps, many of which date back to the 1700s. There are also period maps of just about every country in the world including such tiny lands as Sri Lanka and mystical Tibet. The shop tries to carry old books by Hemingway and such, but its selection is small at best.

The featured artists usually display painting of all mediums, sculpture, and photography, plus full installations and performance art from time to time. The north Denver location is a haven for artists discouraged with the trendy scene of Cherry Creek and downtown which tend to be less daring. This gallery prides itself in offering important but affordable alternative design.

Red Shift is by trade a framing source, however, it also specializes in cutting edge art. It favors the works of national artists and those beginning to make ripples in the art scene. The gallery itself embodies the look and feel of a classic SoHo art house. Tall ceilings and primitive looking walls give it a funky, authentic look of "this-place-is-happening." The gallery's size makes it well suited for exhibits and special events.

Shakespeare's is an upscale pool hall and pub on the outskirts of downtown, housed in an eloquent building with high ceilings, exposed brick walls, and hard wood floors displaying a wealth of regulation size billiard tables. Billiards Magazine hails it as one of the top pool rooms in the nation. This historic relic from Denver's early boom days had been standing empty since the 1950s until the productions revived the theater. The performances have ranged from children's shows to ballet.
