Espresso and books |
1028 South Gaylord Street Denver, CO 80209 United States +1 303 777 1251 |
This elongated rectangle of a shop is the business world's version of a split personality. In the front half, where it sells magazines and a small selection of old and new books, the room has a bohemian feel to it with exposed brick and old chairs. The back half kitchen area, however, which sells everything from milkshakes to smoothies and espressos, is new and contemporary and even has a TV. Thursday night blues and folk jams draw big crowds so arrive early. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Drinks and music |
7 South Broadway Denver, CO 80209 United States +1 720 570 4500 http://www.hi-dive.com/ |
Sputnik is a crowded and trendy place. Noise and smoke rule the roost most of the time. Though the place is small and intimate, find crowds streaming in perpetually. The bartenders are prompt and service is good. The food takes its own time to show up. Booze is cheap and the music out of a jukebox makes the place even more noisier. Hi-Dive on the other hand is only for gigs and concerts. On show days the place simply rocks. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Denver's new home for music |
2240 East Buchtel Boulevard (The Ritchie Center) Denver, CO 80208 United States +1 303 871 2336 |
Located in the massive Ritchie Center, a sprawling 70 million dollar mass of copper, gold, and sandstone on the University of Denver campus, this arena is home to the school's basketball and hockey teams. But sports are not the only draw here. The university has partnered with mega-promoter Universal Concerts. Now the venue, which can hold 8,000 spectators, has become the city's newest home for popular national artists and touring events. For a sports arena the sound quality is surprisingly good, and the steeply graded seating offers good views from every angle of the auditorium. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Historic art house |
110 Broadway Boulevard Denver, CO 80203 United States +1 303 352 1992 |
For years the Mayan Theater, operating with only one screen, was a popular destination to catch art and foreign flicks. But Landmark Theaters purchased the art house in 1986 and spent over USD2 million renovating the exterior facade and converting the interior into three separate theaters. Today, the theater shows the hottest and most daring independent and foreign films flooding the market. Noted for its Art Deco Mayan Revival style, the Mayan is one of only three theaters across the nation exhibiting this design. Free parking is available in the lot at 120 Lincoln Street. A bar with character |
140 S. Broadway Denver, CO 80203 United States +1 303 722 7844 http://www.skylarklounge.com/ |
If you are tired of keeping up with the ever-changing trends in LoDo, or want to hang out in a place less populated with suburban sports nuts and pretentious urban youth, stop by this blast from the past. The crack of pool balls and a hip track from the best jukebox in town are the only sounds audible above the buzz of conversation; in this place talk is an art form. Without any TV's and comfortable booths-built-for-two, conversation flows easy. Live bands crowd into the joint occasionally. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Denver's intimate New York experience |
13 South Broadway (at Ellsworth) Denver, CO 80209 United States +1 303 777 3292 http://www.theatregroup.org/ |
This small, darkly lit theater is touted by critics as one of the best places in the West to see regional premieres of Broadway and off-Broadway shows, and is a haven for daring plays and works exploring gay themes. Since 1987, the approximately 120-seat theater has offered a sophisticated depth of actors and a cozy atmosphere. With only seven rows of seats and relatively inexpensive tickets, it offers an intimate alternative to the city's larger venues. Each performance runs six to eight weeks. Free parking is available. Call for reservations. Review © 2007, Wcities |
