You don't need to be a grease monkey to tool around the fun atmosphere of Bannock Street Garage, where you can step up to the tire rack-edged bar and order a foaming mug of motor oil – ah, make that Stroh's. The owners decided to turn the former auto mechanic shop into a tavern and kept several of the features of the place: the engine boom that hovers overhead, the garage doors that are opened on occasion, and related signs. Show up Monday through Friday for the 2p-6p happy hour, but don't ask for an oil change. -Theresa Ludwick

The lunch menu is extremely reasonable and has a number of standard sandwiches including the Swiss Patty Melt. Both the lunch and dinner menus feature a wealth of pasta selections. This family-owned and operated restaurant has been a fixture in the Bonnie Brae neighborhood for more than 20 years. With a rough and tumble roadhouse appearance mixed with a family friendly atmosphere the tavern caters to all by serving outstanding pizzas, fine, down-home comfort food and lots of beer. The halibut is excellent and comes with a ton of side dishes. The chicken fried steak is a definite winner, but make sure you do not miss the pizza.

Bar fare fills the menu with tasty appetizers including an excellent steak sampler. Predictable burgers and sandwiches comprise the dinner selection, but the Pulled Pork sandwich is a good choice. This establishment holds the oldest liquor license in the state, and it has been in operation for more than a century. Countless American icons have eaten here, including the legendary Wild Bill Cody. Be aware that the dining room walls are festooned with mounted animal trophy heads, which some diners find as uncomfortably distracting. The menu offers some eye-opening fare such as rattlesnake and fried alligator tail. If you prefer the traditional, tenderloin, T-bone and New York strip options abound. For more than 25 years, the Bull and Bush pub has been offering patrons a cozy place to drink in an authentic London atmosphere. The interior is weathered and worn, yet the dark wood, red glass lanterns, and coppertop bar still manage to exude a Victorian feel. Eight to 10 microbrews are always on tap. Each emulates the finest intoxicating flavors Great Britain has to offer. To complement the beer, you can order the standard pub grub, including burgers, sandwiches and wings. +1 303 295 9126
El Chapultepec, at first glance, is just another aging dive bar serving up traditional Mexican tastes on paper plates in downtown. But even though the great green chili draws plenty of patrons, it is the jazz performances that hold prominence in this place. Local as well as some national legends crowd into the small dining room filled with tacky vinyl booths and play just about every night of the year. Since the LoDo revitalization, this has become a trendy nightspot, so expect a big crowd. (This is a cash only establishment).

Charlie Brown's is one of Denver's most diverse establishments. The bar has been a sanctuary for the Capitol Hill area for more than 35 years. Paul "Paulie" Lopez pounds out tunes on the piano, making it one of the only places in the city where young urban hipsters nestle up to the Sinatra crowd, sharing beer and bourbon over song. This is quite possibly the largest menu in the city. It covers everything: Greek, American, Mexican, Italian and more. The gyros are favorites, and the steak and lobster are the best deals in the city. The expansive patio is a definite hotspot on summer evenings.

Everything from the music to the old-fashioned Irish whisky will remind you of the Emerald Island. When the owners made the pub, they set out to make an Irish experience and by all accounts did not fail. The dining and drinking areas were actually constructed in Ireland and shipped to Denver. If you need a "I-am-in-Denver" reality check, grab a seat on the deck and get an awesome view of Coors Field. Entree selections include corned beef and cabbage, Cottage Pie, Gaelic Steak and an all-day Irish breakfast.

Fagan's Restaurant and Bar

Working class pub

Denver, CO 80210

This popular pub does not possess a manufactured charm or upscale designer interior to draw in the crowds like many of the other downtown bars. Instead, Fagan's is a nice gathering place with a lived-in, rustic look that takes good care of its regulars and offers a friendly atmosphere for conversation and, of course, drinking. The menu is an interesting mix of Mexican food and traditional English fare. Try the chicken burrito or the tasty Shepherd's Pie. The full bar is stocked with Irish and English beers.

Set off the street in a dark nook, the Falling Rock Tap House's unassuming brick face is easy to miss in trendy, bar-heavy lower downtown. But this intimate, little tavern has a surprise behind its door: 69 beers on tap that range from Colorado microbrews to European imports. With so many choices, it is the closest thing to draught heaven. The food menu is secondary to the beer, but still offers a generous selection of salads, pizzas, calzones, sandwiches, burgers and tacos. Located just down the street from Coors Field makes it a perfect hangout for pre-game warm ups and post-game celebrations.

Over the years, as the city's economy took flight to other areas, this 1907-built venue slipped into obscurity. Eventually, a local promoting company bought the aging structure, and after an extensive renovation, it reopened as the Fillmore Auditorium. Modeled after the legendary San Francisco venue, the Fillmore is enjoying a rebirth on Colfax and has achieved recognition as one of Denver's top venues, hosting a diverse array of acts from Bob Dylan to Vince Gill to Beck.

In 1934, Denver's most notorious family, the Smalldones opened up an eatery in the North Side to become the heart of both Italian cuisine and an illicit operation. While drawing the neighborhood's attention to their famous pasta, they also drew the attention from police as Denver's only mafia operated in the basement. It's not quite the hoodlum hangout as it used to be as the Smalldone Empire has fallen and Denver's mayor bought Gaetano's, but the food hasn't changed and Chauncy Smalldone still stops by for lunch.

You may start speaking in a Cajun tongue involuntarily when you step through the doors of Gumbo's Louisiana Style Café/Bar/Restaurant (depending on your perception). It bills itself as a café; as a bar, the drinks are exceptionally reasonable; but restaurant seems to be the best description because either the lunch and dinner menus read like a good ole Louisiana boy's – or girl's – dream list. The Sweet Potato Catfish topped with sautéed crabmeat and spinach will transport you to 'Nawlins quicker than Kirk's transporter. Gumbo's is part of a chain, but the Denver locale is not typical of one. -Theresa Ludwick

It is hard to believe that a bar that does not offer designer micro-brews, serve food, provide dancing, furnish outdoor seating, or even possess a pool table could survive in Denver's competitive downtown nightlife scene. Yet, Nallen's not only flourishes, but is a local's favorite for those who still believe in the art of conversation. As expected from an Irish pub, it serves pints of Guinness, Harps, and Black and Tans. It also serves a wide variety of imports and domestic beers.

An old hole with a new name, this sports grill was part of a local chain called Jackson's Hole until 1999. New owners raised the bar, so to speak. Since then, it has earned a reputation as one of the city's top places to go for sports with its numerous televisions and its pool and dart spots. Happy Hour is Monday through Friday from 4 to 6:30pm, with a free buffet thrown in on Fridays. With relatively cheap drinks and no cover charge, that price can hardly be beat for a fun evening of slurping and sleeve-wiping. Charge! -Theresa Ludwick

Chef Oetting keeps experimenting with the diverse cuisine at Yia Yia's on a frequent basis. Hence a steady influx of curious diners is guaranteed. The mussels, oysters, squids and meat are all fresh and unsullied produces. Business as well as personal parties are can be organised with prior reservations. Outdoor dining is encouraged, especially in the summer months.
