Colorado history

(in Hyatt Regency Hotel)
Denver, CO 80202
United States
+1 303 296 1876
This popular tourist destination celebrates the historic year Colorado entered statehood in a rustic cowboy atmosphere adorned with aged wood, rusted iron, and slate. Despite the city setting it is definitely one of those "we-do-not-have-this-at-home" type restaurants. Choose from an array of classic dishes from the American West, including mouth-watering mountain bass, buffalo tenderloin and rack of lamb. Stop in for lunch and check out the theme buffet.

Annie's Cafe

Cozy comfort food
4012 East Eighth Avenur
Denver, CO 80220
United States
+1 303 355 8197
Annie's Café is a throwback to the good old days from the old advertising lining the walls to the phosphate made by a real soda jerk, from the unbelievable portions to the two-buck breakfast specials. Breakfast is the big draw and the homemade muffins are great. For something more substantial, try the biscuits and gravy or eggs benedict. For dinner, the comfort food favorites rule the roost. You can order liver and onions or a heart-stopping platter of chicken fried steak piled with creamy gravy.

A taste of the Big Apple
1628 East Evans Avenue
Denver, CO 80210-4609
United States
+1 303 744 3137
Anthony's spins New York-style, thin crust pizzas about the size of car tires, brimming with bubbling cheeses and all of your favorite toppings. The small, tattered dining area, complete with two pinball machines and a pool table, has seen better days, but the customers do not seem to mind. Carry out and delivery are available. Anthony's offers pizza by the big slice—perfect for folding. Or order a whole pizza. Simple salads and mediocre pasta are also on the menu. Downtown location: 1550 California St., +1 303 573 6236.

Homework takes on new meaning when dining here. As the name implies, this restaurant is run by students at the Culinary Art Institute of Colorado, and judging by the food and service, they are learning their lessons. The popularity of this restaurant can be attested by the fact that weekend reservations are booked weeks in advance. The menu is both creative and top-notch. The entrees, though limited, are diverse, with such items as mustard glazed steak, baked sea bass, and Duck Chasseur. The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

Bang!

Trendy home cooking
3472 West 32nd Avenue
Denver, CO 80211
United States
+1 303 455 1117
Bang! serves some great home-cooking, but with only a scattering of tables inside, seats are sometimes hard to find. The short, 10-item entrée menu seems sparse but allows cooks Jeff Oakley and Cissy Yin to serve masterful creations. The Meatloaf is superb and comes atop a pile of homemade mashed potatoes. Its thick and tasty hamburger is one of the best in the city. The soups are worthy of attention and are almost too pretty to eat. Special Cajun creations sometimes complement the regular menu (which can be found online at the official website).

This family-owned and operated restaurant has been a fixture in the Bonnie Brae neighborhood for more than 20 years. With a rough and tumble roadhouse appearance mixed with a family friendly atmosphere the tavern caters to all by serving outstanding pizzas, fine, down-home comfort food and lots of beer. http://www.breckbrew.com/
Do not leave the city of Denver without imbibing a tall pint of handcrafted Avalanche Ale, brewed by the masters of barley and hops at the Breckenridge Brewery. Unlike the flashy, upscale LoDo version of this small Colorado restaurant chain, this no nonsense spot occupies a space barely big enough for tables. If you are dying for a taste of barbeque with a Texas touch, try one of its sandwiches, especially the Pulled BBQ Pork offering. It comes piled so high with slabs of meat that it resembles a tiny food edifice. The St. Louis-Style Pork Ribs are popular too.

Bar fare fills the menu with tasty appetizers including an excellent steak sampler. Predictable burgers and sandwiches comprise the dinner selection, but the Pulled Pork sandwich is a good choice. Charlie Brown's is one of Denver's most diverse establishments. The bar has been a sanctuary for the Capitol Hill area for more than 35 years. Paul "Paulie" Lopez pounds out tunes on the piano, making it one of the only places in the city where young urban hipsters nestle up to the Sinatra crowd, sharing beer and bourbon over song. This is quite possibly the largest menu in the city. It covers everything: Greek, American, Mexican, Italian and more. What better spot for a date than a place named Duo! The cozy, intimate setting is just right when you want to enjoy a delicious meal undisturbed. A rather whimsical décor, with hardwood flooring and splashes of color, keeps the boredom from setting in. The all-American cuisine, samples of which include steamed mussels with chorizos and spices, Porter-braised pork stew, Flatiron steak, and lamb T-bone, banish thoughts of heavy burgers and greasy fries for a while. Once you are done with the main course, a big portion of chocolate hazelnut cake, or the specially-crafted Duo Apple Tart for Two should spice things up a bit! If you are here on a weekend, make sure you get a healthy dose of the Brunch menu—the basket of pastries & jams, with fresh-baked scones and sweet breads is unbeatable!

In addition the menu offers other items like buffalo meatloaf (USD14), elk medallions (USD22), trout and swordfish to name a few. The wine list is both diverse and high-end. The Wednesday night Prime Rib buffet (USD21.95) is very popular. Lunch for two would cost around USD 24.

You may start speaking in a Cajun tongue involuntarily when you step through the doors of Gumbo's Louisiana Style Café/Bar/Restaurant (depending on your perception). It bills itself as a café; as a bar, the drinks are exceptionally reasonable; but restaurant seems to be the best description because either the lunch and dinner menus read like a good ole Louisiana boy's – or girl's – dream list. Maria's offers one of the more interesting settings for dining in the metro area. Located in north Denver, the popular spot is an old house converted into a restaurant. Even the carriage house contains a seating area. Lunch is the only meal available and Maria's giant sandwiches, made with her scrumptious, thick-sliced homemade bread, fill the menu. Located in what was once Denver's red light district, this American bistro has preserved the elegant structure of a historical building, known as the "House of Mirrors," that used to operate as a brothel. The lunch menu focuses on salads and sandwiches, but also offers a fine selection of entrees including the Cilantro Chicken Stuffed Raviolis. The knockout dinner menu presents a superb offering of baby back ribs with garlic mashed potatoes. The herb roasted chicken rates high as well. The wine and cognac lists are excellent too.

Think Titanic without the waves (or the iceberg): Denver's Ocean Restaurant is large on atmosphere and extravagant in appointment, with several nautical (but nice) dining venues to choose from, including the Galley for relaxed gatherings, intimate alcoves for elegant, romantic preludes, and a backroom, called the Captain's Quarters, for private parties. Seascapes adorn the walls throughout, while maple furnishings provide a rich complement. Arched ceilings, painted with blue sky and clouds, combine to create a feeling of both luxury and whimsy. Also think fresh seafood when walking through Ocean's doors, and a great wine list that brings out the subtleties of the sea's bounty. -Theresa Ludwick

Rodney's

When your low-maintenance dining mood hits you, retire to Rodney's for a good burger, a juicy steak, or a club sandwich. Its downstairs location lacks any sort of natural light, but the dimly lit setting mixes well with the smoky, yet upscale ambiance. This is more of a place where old guys in suits like to come and sip cognac and smoke cigars after a long day at the office. Occasionally, however, it does attract some of the trendy Cherry Creek crowd stopping in for a nightcap.

Strolling through Cherry Creek North's Fillmore Plaza, populated with modern glass towers and upscale boutiques, it is easy to walk right past this fashionably obscure nightspot. The bar resides in the basement of the four-story Janus building. But this place is anything but sterile. Roo Bar consists of two basic rooms: a pool room with six tables covered in purple felt, and a dark smoky lounge by the bar, housing comfortable sofas and large booths to sit back and enjoy a good conversation. The food menu offers standard bar food such as burgers and wings, but the famous martinis are superb.

Add this restaurant to your list if you are looking for a classy atmosphere complete with romantically dim lighting, a full bar and an extensive wine list. Steaks, obviously, rule the menu and are accompanied by side dishes of steamed vegetables or baked potatoes that are big enough to share. Fish and poultry options are offered as well. Outdoor dining is available when the weather permits, and its valet service takes the hassle out of downtown parking.

This restaurant has won so many awards that it is like the Tiger Woods of dining. The interior, however, is low on charm. The small, mirrored bar area looks like something GQ magazine would had praised in the 1950s. Yet, the food more than compensates for the lacking decor. All the barbecued ribs, chicken and combo plates include baked beans, cole slaw and Texas toast, and come in generous portions. There are also sandwiches like barbecue beef and catfish.

Once upon a time, there was a restaurant in Denver. Started by an entrepreneur in the 1920s, it was called Coney Island, third in a chain of five, and it served good old comfort food. Over 70 years later, the restaurant reopened a few doors down under the management of the original restaurateur's grandsons. Sam's No. 3 still serves the same comforting food "with an attitude." Plunge into the Kitchen Sink Skillet for breakfast, while enjoying the simple, nostalgia-inducing interior. American, Greek, and Mexican fare await you at servings that exceed the prices nicely. -Theresa Ludwick

This suave Denver nightspot, which breathes jazz into the city, is an eclectic supper club full of textured colors and intimate seating. With such a setting it is hard to believe that it is a southern chain. The jazz is live every night of the week, so naturally the atmosphere is easy going and hip-although you will find plenty of baby boomers dressed to the nines. Selections from its ambitiously creative menu include steaks, seafood, pastas and elaborate salads.

Decked in sea worthy decor and ringing with nautical rhymes, this restaurant is a romantic retreat complete with a vibrant view of the city. It also serves as a museum of sorts, for it exhibits some of the earliest yachting photos (1890) ever taken of the America Cup race. Try the Applewood Smoked Libery farms Duck Breast ($24), or the Grilled New York Strip Steak ($32) - they come highly recommended. Wander down to this sports bar if you want to watch your favorite team, for it offers five big screen televisions. A typical bar food menu offers big portions at small prices, making it perfect for groups. Bronco fans fill up the room on Sundays in autumn, so beware of showing other team allegiances; the people here are overbearingly obnoxious with their Bronco adoration. The rooftop patio bar provides refuge from the sports scene and a dance floor draws an older crowd on Friday and Saturday nights.

Step into the time warp that is Steuben's, and allow yourself to be transported back to the golden days. It is hard to miss out on the charm of the metal chairs, woody tables and panels, linoleum floors and dim lighting on both, the front and back patios. In keeping with the razzmatazz is the traditional American fare, comprising delicious fried chicken, the nightly special meatloaf, piping hot macaroni & cheese and chunky cheeseburgers. Fruity cocktails enhance the meal; those who prefer a more alcoholic accompaniment could choose from the competent wine list. Bring the gang along for some unbeatable deviled eggs and thin, crunchy french fries that they will not forget for a long time! Located across from the Brown Palace Hotel, this restaurant is the ideal setting for a power lunch or dinner. The small dining room looks like the crowd it draws: polished. Dark wood paneling, aged wooden chairs, and a stunning wooden bar give the place an Old World charm. Despite the highbrow setting, the place still maintains a casual spirit. Seafood and steak rule the menu. The French Fried Lobster and the Stuffed Tuscan Pork Chop are favorites. The lunch menu is similar to the dinner menu, but adds on a few burgers and sandwiches.

Victory American Grill & Bar is located in Denver’s historic Baur Building, originally home to a confectionary and candy shop. It has been claimed that this very spot was the location where the first ice cream soda was served. The interior reflects the buildings history – high ceiling, spacious room – with some modern acoutrements – mirrors, private booths. Though it bills itself as American, Greek cuisine shares a portion of the menu: Greek Meatballs & Linquini and others. Try the Mac-N-3 Cheeses (gouda, chevre, and cheddar) with fried pickles. For dessert, ask for a confection inspired by one of Baur’s old recipes. -Theresa Ludwick
