Neighborhood tradition |
980 Grant Street Denver, CO 80203-2907 United States +1 303 860 1655 |
Charlie Brown's is one of Denver's most diverse establishments. The bar has been a sanctuary for the Capitol Hill area for more than 35 years. Paul "Paulie" Lopez pounds out tunes on the piano, making it one of the only places in the city where young urban hipsters nestle up to the Sinatra crowd, sharing beer and bourbon over song. This is quite possibly the largest menu in the city. It covers everything: Greek, American, Mexican, Italian and more. The gyros are favorites, and the steak and lobster are the best deals in the city. The expansive patio is a definite hotspot on summer evenings. Review © 2007, Wcities |

A little of everything |
1201 Cherokee Street Denver, CO 80204 United States +1 303 623 0346 |
Located just south of downtown, this secluded gem boasts all the comforts of home in a rustic lodge setting. Heavy wooden furniture creates the subtle illusion of dining inside a mountain cottage. Beautiful gardens surround the outdoor patio. The menu offers traditional morning favorites, including an incredible stack of French toast. The pancakes and omelets are recommended. For lunch try the Baked Cheese Pasta or the Italian Sausage Sandwich. Dinner features everything from Raspberry Chicken to Whitefish. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Espresso and books |
1028 South Gaylord Street Denver, CO 80209 United States +1 303 777 1251 |
This elongated rectangle of a shop is the business world's version of a split personality. In the front half, where it sells magazines and a small selection of old and new books, the room has a bohemian feel to it with exposed brick and old chairs. The back half kitchen area, however, which sells everything from milkshakes to smoothies and espressos, is new and contemporary and even has a TV. Thursday night blues and folk jams draw big crowds so arrive early. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Despite its hidden location inside the downtown Denver Club building do not deny yourself the chance for true deli food by thinking you need to be a member-it is open to the public. It features a fist full of homemade salads ranging from red skin potato to caesar pasta. Its sandwiches, which in true deli tradition feature specialty names like the West Coast Manager, and the Auditor, are many and include vegetarian choices. Review © 2007, Wcities |

For more than 20 years, this family owned and operated restaurant has been serving the masses in downtown Denver. A collection of colorful pictures of Mexico adorn the walls casting a bright and festive look throughout the room. For morning fuel try the breakfast burrito. For lunch, or dinner, go for the Taquitos al Carbon, which is charbroiled meat with salsa and avocado, or the steak ranchero. Lunch draws big crowds so plan accordingly. This is one of those rare restaurants that offers a classy look, but with an amazingly casual atmosphere. It lends itself to being a popular stop for businessmen, shoppers and for people watching, especially from its sidewalk patio. In addition to its breakfast menu, which is as varied as a box of crayons, it also serves a wide variety of lunch and dinner selections such as pan seared salmon (USD16.99), buffalo burgers and New York strip steak. Located near the City and County Building, this is a great spot for a breakfast meeting or the perfect place to fuel up for a day of sightseeing. Locals love it for its bright, pleasant, and homey atmosphere, friendly staff (except if you have kids, it is not child friendly by any means) and inexpensively priced menu. Table for two? |
2413 West 32nd Avenue at Zuni Denver, CO 80211 United States +1 303 477 4141 http://www.duodenver.com/ |
What better spot for a date than a place named Duo! The cozy, intimate setting is just right when you want to enjoy a delicious meal undisturbed. A rather whimsical décor, with hardwood flooring and splashes of color, keeps the boredom from setting in. The all-American cuisine, samples of which include steamed mussels with chorizos and spices, Porter-braised pork stew, Flatiron steak, and lamb T-bone, banish thoughts of heavy burgers and greasy fries for a while. Once you are done with the main course, a big portion of chocolate hazelnut cake, or the specially-crafted Duo Apple Tart for Two should spice things up a bit! If you are here on a weekend, make sure you get a healthy dose of the Brunch menu—the basket of pastries & jams, with fresh-baked scones and sweet breads is unbeatable! Review © 2007, Wcities |

Breakfast over easy |

The Egg Shell knows how to create a breakfast feast: there are over 50 menu items to tempt even the pickiest eater. Choose between waffles, pancakes, cereals, muffins and standard (and not-so-standard) egg dishes. Unfortunately, the Egg Shell closes at 2p every day; it should know that breakfast tastes best between midnight and 3:00a. Its Cherry Creek location draws a trendy crowd, and if you hang out long enough you are liable to see some of Denver's more notable celebrities. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Denver dining landmark |
29260 Highway 40 Denver, CO 80401 United States +1 303 526 0661 http://www.historicelrancho.com/ |
Since 1948 this rustic restaurant with its neon script sign along Interstate 70 has been a Colorado dining landmark. The log cabin-like interior is lined with huge picture windows, furnishing stunning views of the Continental Divide. Prime rib is the reigning superstar of the menu. In addition the menu offers other items like buffalo meatloaf (USD14), elk medallions (USD22), trout and swordfish to name a few. The wine list is both diverse and high-end. The Wednesday night Prime Rib buffet (USD21.95) is very popular. Lunch for two would cost around USD 24. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located in the Brown Palace, this is a fine spot for a leisurely breakfast or business lunch. Its breakfast menu, laden with upscale takes on steak and eggs and salmon benedict, made it famous and the Dom Perignon Sunday Brunch is like spending a day with the jet set. For lunch, try the Seafood Paella (USD15.25) or Grilled Boneless Pork Chop (USD14.25). All the dishes are meticulously prepared and give the sense that you are eating a masterpiece. True to its name, Goodfriend's has remained a popular neighborhood meeting place for more than a decade. The charming, homely ambiance and kid-friendly staff make this a great family destination for lunch or dinner. The menu offers an eclectic mix ranging from Mexican fare to burgers to salads. The Sloppy Chicken Burrito, piled high with sour cream and guacamole, is definitely a highlight. The margaritas are widely considered to be the best in town. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located in the heart of the uptown hospital district, Hot Cakes is one of Denver's hottest spots for breakfast and lunch. Weekends can be crowded so pick up a newspaper and be prepared to wait for a table. The buttermilk chocolate chip pancakes smothered in whipped cream are so decadent, diners take reassurance in knowing that an emergency room is just across the street. For the healthier crowd there are fruit topped pancakes and a variety of omelet creations, as well as a tasty selection of bagel sandwiches. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Odd assortment of good eats |
1836 Blake Street Denver, CO 80202 United States +1 303 308 0110 |
Manny's Underground is an odd blend of bistro, deli, coffeehouse and breakfast bakery meshed into a small brick office building basement in LoDo. This might be the only restaurant in town where you can order macaroni and cheese with crab cakes, a bowl of Captain Crunch sprinkled with granola, or a turkey sandwich and a big slice of apple pie. The homemade empanadas and massive breakfast burritos rate superb. The lunch specials draw crowds, so arrive early if time is a factor. Outdoor seating is available. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Moe's Broadway bagel offers multiple locations throughout Denver, but this Capitol Hill spot is one of the more popular, especially on weekend mornings. Live music occasionally fills the shop, and always be on the look out for customer giveaways. Numerous bagels, such as cranberry nut, pumpkin, spinach, sesame and pumpernickel fill the shelves. Sandwiches are made to order, and homemade ice cream makes for a tasty dessert. The "Moe's Zone", a fluffy egg in a bagel, is a popular menu item. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Forget health food, and dig in |
2345 East Evans Avenue (at University) Denver, CO 80208 United States +1 303 733 7376 |
One word describes the food served at this neighborhood greasy spoon-grub. The owner has been a fixture in the Denver dining scene forever running such local favorites as Pete's Kitchen and the Satire Lounge. His latest venture, Pete's University Park Café, continues a long tradition of short order delights including an excellent Italian sausage sandwich and breakfast burrito. But the gyros and domades keep the crowds coming. Do not expect health food here unless you consider a side salad and grilled cheese sandwich diet food. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Atmosphere and more |
2334 South Colorado Boulevard Denver, CO 80222 United States +1 303 756 1268 http://www.poppiesdenver.com |
From outside appearances, Poppies does not hold great portent, but looks, in this case, are extremely deceiving. Plants, booths and a wooden interior cast an upscale, yet, casual feel that is popular with the business set, couples and neighborhood locals. The menu coddles to all tastes and includes sandwiches, steaks (New York Strip), Mexican fare, stir-fried veggies and seafood such as broiled salmon. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Varied menu |
1085 South Gaylord Street (at Mississippi) Denver, CO 80209 United States +1 303 733 8856 |
Step inside this longtime local's favorite, and the wooden tables, wood paneled walls, and dartboards will give you the immediate sense of being in an English pub. Matching the classic setting is the classic menu, which offers salads, pasta, seafood, steaks and Mexican dishes. Plus, it has outstanding burgers, which the local press has crowned as the "Best Burgers in Denver." Reiver's also serves Sunday brunch, with create-your-own omelets. Review © 2007, Wcities |

If you need a quiet escape from the DTC business grind, head over to On the Rock Café and Grill for a taste of Cathy Upchurch's cooking. It is literally like leaving the office and heading to your mom's house for a homemade meal. The family owned establishment has mom (Cathy Upchurch) in the kitchen creating new spins on breakfast and lunch classics. Breakfast selections range from the healthy to the decadent, including the Double Rock Slide, which features bacon, eggs, sausage, pancakes and hash browns. Mimosa Mia |
400, East 20th Avenue Denver, CO 80205 United States +1 303 863 7473 http://www.thedishbistro.com |
A sweet neighborhood eating place is the Dish Bistro in Denver's Uptown district. This place gives new meaning to the word, eclectic, calling the restaurant's varied selections, "comfort food." But don't be fooled by the description. There's much more than mashed potatoes and gravy. In fact, there's neither of those! Instead, you'll find a menu that gravitates unapologetically toward international and a touch of vegetarian cuisine. Saturday and Sunday brunch includes a $5 Bottomless Mimosa (champagne and orange juice), and the Frozen Grand Marnier Creamsicle dessert just might call for a designated driver. Eclectic, indeed. -Theresa Ludwick Review © 2007, Wcities |
