Bump and Grind

The '70s are back!
439 East 17th Avenue
Denver, CO 80203
United States
+1 303 861 4841
What started out as a coffeehouse/workout studio has been transformed into a hipster hangout serving decadent desserts and healthy lunches. Located in uptown, this groovy place sports a retro look with sky blue hardwood floors, a clutter of tables and bright orange polyester sofa seats. The Roasted Veggie Pie is a cosmic delight. Elaine's Big Salad will satisfy leaf lovers with a hearty appetite. For dessert, do not miss the delicious Carmel Knowledge Bars. Its Saturday brunches tower as legendary.

Café Bohemia

Artful taste
1729 East Evans Avenue
Denver, CO 80210
United States
+1 303 777 7222
This small cafe is an artsy French spot full of comfy, flea market type furnishings. The quiche is always light and delicious and its salads use only the freshest greens with delicate dressings. The lasagna is a tasty, filling choice with a well-seasoned tomato sauce. While the dinner menu might be slight in choices (four varying meals rotate weekly), the unique flavor and professional presentation make their offering seem anything but limited. Reservations are not recommended; they are required. Note that small kids are frowned upon.

Located just south of downtown, this secluded gem boasts all the comforts of home in a rustic lodge setting. Heavy wooden furniture creates the subtle illusion of dining inside a mountain cottage. Beautiful gardens surround the outdoor patio. The menu offers traditional morning favorites, including an incredible stack of French toast. The pancakes and omelets are recommended. For lunch try the Baked Cheese Pasta or the Italian Sausage Sandwich. Dinner features everything from Raspberry Chicken to Whitefish.

Located near the City and County Building, this is a great spot for a breakfast meeting or the perfect place to fuel up for a day of sightseeing. Gumbo's

Ragin' Cajun
1530, 16th Street
Denver, CO 80202
United States
+1 720 956 1490
You may start speaking in a Cajun tongue involuntarily when you step through the doors of Gumbo's Louisiana Style Café/Bar/Restaurant (depending on your perception). It bills itself as a café; as a bar, the drinks are exceptionally reasonable; but restaurant seems to be the best description because either the lunch and dinner menus read like a good ole Louisiana boy's – or girl's – dream list. The Sweet Potato Catfish topped with sautéed crabmeat and spinach will transport you to 'Nawlins quicker than Kirk's transporter. Gumbo's is part of a chain, but the Denver locale is not typical of one. -Theresa Ludwick

Mecury Cafe

Eclectic entertainment
2199 California Street
Denver, CO 80205
United States
+1 303 294 9281
http://www.mercurycafe.com
The owner of Mercury Café calls it a community center. The cafe exudes a vague hippie aura and serves as a restaurant, bakery, coffeehouse, dance club and concert hall. It is hard to pinpoint the exact style of this eclectic nightspot, serving up everything from Celtic and Cajun to theater and poetry. Swing and salsa bands are regulars on the second floor, which accommodates 350. The main dining room might feature a concert pianist one evening and a string quartet the next. The dinner menu offers salads, sandwiches, pasta dishes and steak.

This popular dining alternative offers fabulous Middle Eastern fare with a heavy emphasis on good health. It lends for a good stop when running the Cherry Creek shopping gauntlet. Among the favorite dishes are various mixtures of rice and vegetables, sweet-and-sour tofu, veggie burgers, and a meatless chili that makes even carnivores nod with "this-is-darn" tasty approval. All dishes are crafted from scratch and meet strict kosher standards. Fresh juices offered too. Outdoor seating is available.

+1 303 455 2451
Just across the Platte River from downtown, this happening spot has quietly endured the upscale changes of the neighborhood and remains a hip coffee house for young and old patrons alike. Artwork, Internet access and a connecting bookstore give this coffee shop a cultivated countenance. A late night menu and live entertainment keep the place active. Rosa Linda Mexican Cafe

Award-winning burritos
2005 W 33rd Ave
Denver, CO 80211
United States
+1 303 455 0608
Even after a much-needed renovation, the Rosa Linda Café still has the tawdry charm that regulars have come to expect. The coats of paint did not displace the murals and paintings that create such ambiance. The place is still family-operated with love and care. The award-winning shredded beef burritos highlight the menu and the green chili elevates Mexican grub into an art form (not to be compared with that on the walls), making the chili rellenos another delight. It rates as extremely family-friendly.

The Meaning of Coffeehouse
2019 E 17th Avenue
Denver, CO 80206
United States
+1 303 322 8384
http://www.stmarkscoffeehouse....
This local hangout brings together all the essentials of a neighborhood coffeehouse. Art on the walls, interesting conversation and a great cappuccino make St. Mark's one of Denver's cultural hubs. There's always someone enjoying the patio and on nice days they slide open the garage door bringing in the fresh air and bringing together this coffeehouse and the neighborhood. Try one of their great paninis or sample from their wide selection of drinks from tea to beer. If you're looking for more, ask who's playing downstairs – there's a basement venue for local music.

Three book-crammed floors and a basement hold the store's whopping stock of 500,000 titles. Big, stuffed easy chairs dot the floors and invite browsing, especially in the massive magazine section that also features out-of-town newspapers. A cozy coffee shop on the main floor, adds to the artsy ambiance. In addition the shop hosts more than 500 author signings and lectures each year.
