Breckenridge Brewery & BBQ

Texas-style BBQ in Colorado
471 Kalamath Street
Denver, CO 80204
United States
+1 303 573 0431
http://www.breckbrew.com/
Do not leave the city of Denver without imbibing a tall pint of handcrafted Avalanche Ale, brewed by the masters of barley and hops at the Breckenridge Brewery. Unlike the flashy, upscale LoDo version of this small Colorado restaurant chain, this no nonsense spot occupies a space barely big enough for tables. If you are dying for a taste of barbeque with a Texas touch, try one of its sandwiches, especially the Pulled BBQ Pork offering. It comes piled so high with slabs of meat that it resembles a tiny food edifice. The St. Louis-Style Pork Ribs are popular too.

If you thought a trip to the neighborhood bar would entail a raucous encounter with fellow drinkers, think again! This happening spot in the Capitol Hill neighborhood offers patrons a full bar, restaurant and a few wireless terminals to surf the internet. Those with laptops can also avail of this facility. A pool house and a good old jukebox are some of the things that draw the crowds in here. A 4-to-6p weekday happy hour sees a dollar off all drinks served within. The cherry on the cake? The Internet service is free if you buy food or a drink worth a minimal amount.

Charlie Brown's Bar and Grill

Neighborhood tradition
980 Grant Street
Denver, CO 80203-2907
United States
+1 303 860 1655
Charlie Brown's is one of Denver's most diverse establishments. The bar has been a sanctuary for the Capitol Hill area for more than 35 years. Paul "Paulie" Lopez pounds out tunes on the piano, making it one of the only places in the city where young urban hipsters nestle up to the Sinatra crowd, sharing beer and bourbon over song. This is quite possibly the largest menu in the city. It covers everything: Greek, American, Mexican, Italian and more. The gyros are favorites, and the steak and lobster are the best deals in the city. The expansive patio is a definite hotspot on summer evenings.

Denver's homegrown chain is at the forefront of the big burrito revolution. Rolled in warm tortillas the size of full-length vinyl, these babies come brimming with freshly prepared ingredients. Locations are scattered throughout Denver. An ultra modern décor gives each location an urban look, and features a heavy mix of polished wood and steel. Choose from a selection of Fajita Burritos (stuffed full with marinated meats, rice, green peppers and onions) or Bean Burritos. Tacos are also available. Both tacos and burritos are pieced together in assembly line fashion right before your eyes. Beer is available.

Church

Lively nightclub in historic church
1160 Lincoln Street
Denver, CO 80203
United States
http://www.the-church.com
Located in a turn of the century stone church, this place is Denver's hottest nightspot and trendiest disco. The crowded main dance floor resides where pews once rested and a high tech lighting system flickers among awe-inspiring stained glass windows. Other rooms adjacent to the large dance floor offer sushi and pizza and inviting booths for lounging. For a complete diversion put on the white make-up and black leather and head downstairs to the dimly lit Goth room. Another room downstairs plays host to local bands. The cover can be pricey, especially on weekends. Admission varies, usually USD10.

Dazzle Supper Club

Dazzling dining and decor
930 Lincoln Street
Denver, CO 80203
United States
+1 303 839 5100
Dazzle splashes a hefty dash of art deco over the interior of the old Fuji En restaurant, creating a glitzy bit of nighttime magic in a space that looks nothing but drab from the outside. The huge bar and dining area could easily pass for a hip speak-easy, and the jazzy ambiance goes well with the wide selection of martinis. Service runs slow at times, but the dining room has a relaxed, darkened atmosphere. The menu is wide ranging, presenting everything from burgers to seafood, tamales to smoked duck. The crab cake appetizers are also a specialty

Gabor's

Pulsating in the heart of Capitol Hill, this dark, candle-lit establishment provides a swank sanctuary for the neighborhood hipsters. Walls are covered with pasted pictures of bygone Hollywood movie stars and a three-foot glow-in-the-dark replica of the Empire State Building adorns the kitchen entrance. Pool, pinball and one of the best jukeboxes in town complement the easy atmosphere. Hamburgers and the veggie sandwich are the most popular menu items. The bar serves all libations, but only offers three beers on tap.

Ikano Bowl

Healthy food in a hurry
790 E Colfax Avenue
Denver, CO 80203
United States
+1 303 837 9378
Ikano Bowl is the place to go if you want Asian food in a hurry, but still care about your health. The rice bowls here are great: topped with veggies or meat. You can get teriyaki, BBQ, or curry versions with the snap of a finger. The appetizers are also excellent and like everything else are shamefully inexpensive. Try the Moo-Shu Roll for a spicy treat. The atmosphere is bright and clean with decorative touches like lanterns and flowers, but you will be in and out before you have time to notice.

Potager

Hip bistro with ever changing menu
1109 Ogden Street
Denver, CO 80218-2809

+1 303 832 5788
Located in the heart of Capitol Hill, this charming spot is small and cluttered with tables. The atmosphere borders on chaos, with the staff flying about in a ballet of food service. Potager, which means "kitchen garden," can challenge the ears with its booming ambiance. But this is quite possibly the friendliest dining spot in the area. The menu, which is always changing, features chicken, tenderloin, pork and fish dishes. The wine list is extensive and the dessert selection often features berry cobblers and tarts—the perfect end of meal treat.

Spicy Pickle

Homegrown sub shop

Denver, CO 80203
United States
+1 303 860 0730

Just the fact that this common-looking sub shop has managed to survive downtown's competitive dining scene is remarkable, but even more remarkable is that in less than two years it has managed to create a huge following. Its ability to offer "mmm-this-is delicious" type sandwiches is its draw. All subs come on Italian loaf bread and offer an amazing array of options including 12 meats, 14 spreads and 13 cheeses. The panini sandwiches are just as popular. All food is counter-ordered. Other location: 745 Colorado Boulevard, +1 303 321 8353.

This bustling Capitol Hill bistro, a mere hop from downtown, serves a palatable blend of breakfast delights and healthy lunch fare. The omelets, including a tasty interpretation of the famous Denver Omelet, highlight the menu, but the quiche specials and the pancakes are equally satisfying. The atmosphere is friendly and relaxing, making the café a great way to start the day. Try to arrive early to avoid the rush, especially on weekends.

United States
+1 303 832 7313

Located within walking distance of the State Capitol and other city landmarks, this restaurant has built a name for serving excellent vegetarian food. The decor is bare bones simple, and the clientele runs the gamut from heath nut business yuppies to granola hippies. Breakfast, with the amazing Banana Bread French Toast (USD5.95), tasty Breakfast Burrito (USD5.95), and numerous scramblers, made the place famous. But lunch draws huge crowds and popular demand finally kept the place open for dinner, which feature tofu creations, pasta, and an excellent veggie burger.

Watson's Liquor & Grocery

Ice cream with Norman Rockwell
900 Lincoln Street
Denver, CO 80203
United States
+1 303 837 1366
Established in 1951 as a soda fountain and pharmacy, this area landmark is straight out of a Norman Rockwell painting. The soda fountain offers sweet, hand-dipped chocolate milkshakes and serves the extras in the steel mixer. Over 100 microbrews are available for carryout, and an extensive wine department offers wines from around the world. The alcohol selection may seem unusual in this environment, and it is: this shop was "grandfathered in" (allowed to continue established business practices) after Colorado passed a law against selling liquor and groceries in the same place.
