Denver, CO 80202

This popular tourist destination celebrates the historic year Colorado entered statehood in a rustic cowboy atmosphere adorned with aged wood, rusted iron, and slate. Despite the city setting it is definitely one of those "we-do-not-have-this-at-home" type restaurants. Choose from an array of classic dishes from the American West, including mouth-watering mountain bass, buffalo tenderloin and rack of lamb. Stop in for lunch and check out the theme buffet.

Serving the Capitol Hill neighborhood for over 25 years, the Lavero family has learned the imitative secret of making good crispy dough to hold perfect blends of cheeses and toppings. The unassuming white brick façade carries an aged look, and the dark and worn dining area covers two quiet, comfortable rooms. Besides pizza the kitchen also offers an assortment of Italian standards, including calzones and an array of pasta dishes. The Tiramisu is a great way to close out the meal. Wine and beer are also available.

+1 303 355 8197
Annie's Café is a throwback to the good old days from the old advertising lining the walls to the phosphate made by a real soda jerk, from the unbelievable portions to the two-buck breakfast specials. Breakfast is the big draw and the homemade muffins are great. For something more substantial, try the biscuits and gravy or eggs benedict. For dinner, the comfort food favorites rule the roost. You can order liver and onions or a heart-stopping platter of chicken fried steak piled with creamy gravy.

Anthony's spins New York-style, thin crust pizzas about the size of car tires, brimming with bubbling cheeses and all of your favorite toppings. The small, tattered dining area, complete with two pinball machines and a pool table, has seen better days, but the customers do not seem to mind. Carry out and delivery are available. Anthony's offers pizza by the big slice—perfect for folding. Or order a whole pizza. Simple salads and mediocre pasta are also on the menu. Downtown location: 1550 California St., +1 303 573 6236.

Homework takes on new meaning when dining here. As the name implies, this restaurant is run by students at the Culinary Art Institute of Colorado, and judging by the food and service, they are learning their lessons. The popularity of this restaurant can be attested by the fact that weekend reservations are booked weeks in advance. The menu is both creative and top-notch. You are not only encouraged to eat with your hands at this Ethiopian restaurant, but it is mandatory. Each guest orders from a selection of spicy lamb, beef, shrimp, chicken or veggies, and it comes on a platter lined with a spongy flatbread called injera. The food is flavorful and tends to be on the spicy side. A varied beer selection, including some African brands, will help cool down your mouth. Do not pass up the authentic Ethiopian coffee to close the meal.

This LoDo restaurant is an interesting experience: if you trust your own cooking! The restaurant's thing is to lie out a long, dizzying buffet of edible treats and have you collect your own choices. After you have picked out your meats, veggies, and sauces, you hand them to a chef who whips it onto a grill and cooks it before your eyes. This can be fun. It can also be a disaster if you do not choose wisely. The decor is warehouse chic with a wall of bricks and high, thick wood beams.

Bang! serves some great home-cooking, but with only a scattering of tables inside, seats are sometimes hard to find. The short, 10-item entrée menu seems sparse but allows cooks Jeff Oakley and Cissy Yin to serve masterful creations. The Meatloaf is superb and comes atop a pile of homemade mashed potatoes. Its thick and tasty hamburger is one of the best in the city. The soups are worthy of attention and are almost too pretty to eat. Special Cajun creations sometimes complement the regular menu (which can be found online at the official website).

Hence, this food pearl rates as one of the best in Colorado. Located in uptown, this groovy place sports a retro look with sky blue hardwood floors, a clutter of tables and bright orange polyester sofa seats. The Roasted Veggie Pie is a cosmic delight. Elaine's Big Salad will satisfy leaf lovers with a hearty appetite. For dessert, do not miss the delicious Carmel Knowledge Bars. Its Saturday brunches tower as legendary.

The usual reaction of anyone walking into this funky little cafe for the first time is "wow, I cannot believe I never heard about this place." Located in the unlikely area of Denver's Antique Row, Cafe Cero's interior of chandeliers, stained glass windows and adobe walls is unmatched. The Blue Room, in the balcony area, with sofas, antique end tables and muted candles is perfect for exchanging coy glances over wine and candlelight. The menu, which is small, features a variety of sandwiches. Facilities provided here include live entertainment, catering service, and banquet.

If you thought a trip to the neighborhood bar would entail a raucous encounter with fellow drinkers, think again! This happening spot in the Capitol Hill neighborhood offers patrons a full bar, restaurant and a few wireless terminals to surf the internet. Those with laptops can also avail of this facility. A pool house and a good old jukebox are some of the things that draw the crowds in here. A 4-to-6p weekday happy hour sees a dollar off all drinks served within. The cherry on the cake? The Internet service is free if you buy food or a drink worth a minimal amount.

This small cafe is an artsy French spot full of comfy, flea market type furnishings. The quiche is always light and delicious and its salads use only the freshest greens with delicate dressings. The lasagna is a tasty, filling choice with a well-seasoned tomato sauce. While the dinner menu might be slight in choices (four varying meals rotate weekly), the unique flavor and professional presentation make their offering seem anything but limited. Reservations are not recommended; they are required. Note that small kids are frowned upon.

Café Brazil, located in the Highland neighborhood in a bright pink brick building, specializes in flavors of old Brazil. So if you are headed here, prepare your mouth for some of the best black bean soup in the West. The décor is nothing special and the place is tiny, but this makes for a cozy setting perfect for a romantic escapade. The Peixe de Angola, a mixture of shrimp and bacalau in a coconut cream sauce, sprinkled with cashews and herbs, is definitely a flavorful menu highlight. A nice, sometimes exotic variety of South American wines are available.

This Irish/Welsh/Scottish-themed restaurant resembles the literary den of James Joyce and begs for quiet conversation rather than the loud toasting of pints. Book-covered walls give it a, 'wow-I-wish-my-house-looked-this-cozy' type feel. Shepherd's pie, and Lamb Casserole confirm the restaurant's authenticity. There are also sandwiches and burgers, including the turkey burger, which is fun to order just because it comes with a side of cranberries. El Chapultepec, at first glance, is just another aging dive bar serving up traditional Mexican tastes on paper plates in downtown. But even though the great green chili draws plenty of patrons, it is the jazz performances that hold prominence in this place. Local as well as some national legends crowd into the small dining room filled with tacky vinyl booths and play just about every night of the year. Charlie Brown's is one of Denver's most diverse establishments. The bar has been a sanctuary for the Capitol Hill area for more than 35 years. Paul "Paulie" Lopez pounds out tunes on the piano, making it one of the only places in the city where young urban hipsters nestle up to the Sinatra crowd, sharing beer and bourbon over song. This is quite possibly the largest menu in the city. It covers everything: Greek, American, Mexican, Italian and more. The gyros are favorites, and the steak and lobster are the best deals in the city. The expansive patio is a definite hotspot on summer evenings.

That's what the name means. Add "Italian" to the description and you've got it. In fact, colorful is also a good way to describe the place with its upbeat, upscale atmosphere, open kitchen concept, and conversation-friendly patio dining area. Cucina Colore's focus on clean cut, authentic Italian cuisine separates it from many other wannabes and try-to-bes. The restaurant has an award-winning wine list that will compliment and enhance any choice you make, from their appetizers to salads to wood-fired pizza to pasta. Delicate sorbets and authentic gelatos finish off the evening with color, you might say. -Theresa Ludwick

It is best to enter this nifty restaurant with an empty gut for the menu is large and diverse. You can start with the duck salad and then try one of the many rice noodle soups, which are all generous with shrimp and crabmeat, and one even includes winkle. And then for entrees, opt for one of the many rice noodle bowls or try something different like the Eel Hot Pot or the Spicy Stir-Fried Squid with Lemon Grass. Beer is available.

Driving down Colorado Boulevard it is easy to pass right by Damascus. But tucked away in an unassuming strip mall, this small restaurant serves good Middle Eastern cuisine at an inexpensive price. Locals flock to the tiny, one room establishment and the tight space fills up quickly. Make a reservation if you are coming with a large group. The traditional hummus is tasty, especially spread over baked pita bread, fresh from the oven. Food presentation is rather simple, but the authentic taste will definitely satisfy your appetite.

Dazzle splashes a hefty dash of art deco over the interior of the old Fuji En restaurant, creating a glitzy bit of nighttime magic in a space that looks nothing but drab from the outside. The huge bar and dining area could easily pass for a hip speak-easy, and the jazzy ambiance goes well with the wide selection of martinis. Service runs slow at times, but the dining room has a relaxed, darkened atmosphere. The menu is wide ranging, presenting everything from burgers to seafood, tamales to smoked duck. Despite the tuxedo-clad waitstaff this place manages to be upper upscale without seeming overly pretentious. Inviting leather couches surround a cozy fireplace, making its cigar lounge a special place for enjoying a fine single malt scotch. All of its steaks come in generous portions and are large enough to share. Seafood options are offered. But most impressive of all is the wine list, which is big enough to come with Cliff Notes. Pulsating in the heart of Capitol Hill, this dark, candle-lit establishment provides a swank sanctuary for the neighborhood hipsters. Walls are covered with pasted pictures of bygone Hollywood movie stars and a three-foot glow-in-the-dark replica of the Empire State Building adorns the kitchen entrance. Pool, pinball and one of the best jukeboxes in town complement the easy atmosphere. Hamburgers and the veggie sandwich are the most popular menu items. The bar serves all libations, but only offers three beers on tap.

In 1934, Denver's most notorious family, the Smalldones opened up an eatery in the North Side to become the heart of both Italian cuisine and an illicit operation. While drawing the neighborhood's attention to their famous pasta, they also drew the attention from police as Denver's only mafia operated in the basement. It's not quite the hoodlum hangout as it used to be as the Smalldone Empire has fallen and Denver's mayor bought Gaetano's, but the food hasn't changed and Chauncy Smalldone still stops by for lunch.

It is not often that one can use the nouns 'New York strip steak' and 'Japanese restaurant' in one sentence, but this little nugget of dining diversity pulls it off. From the outside, it harbors all the appeal of a post-Christmas Visa bill, all of which makes the inviting interior that much more surprising. Besides the usual Japanese offerings of sashimi and various teriyaki dishes, the restaurant offers a huge sushi selection, as well as combo plates like filet mignon and lobster.

You may start speaking in a Cajun tongue involuntarily when you step through the doors of Gumbo's Louisiana Style Café/Bar/Restaurant (depending on your perception). It bills itself as a café; as a bar, the drinks are exceptionally reasonable; but restaurant seems to be the best description because either the lunch and dinner menus read like a good ole Louisiana boy's – or girl's – dream list. The Sweet Potato Catfish topped with sautéed crabmeat and spinach will transport you to 'Nawlins quicker than Kirk's transporter. Gumbo's is part of a chain, but the Denver locale is not typical of one. -Theresa Ludwick

He would probably appreciate the mounds of pasta as well. The test of any Italian restaurant is the Minestrone, and this one definitely passes. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are available all day long at great prices, making this a perfect place to bring the whole family. Typical diner seating fills the place, including lots of counter stools and cozy booths. Hearty steaks, seafood, and fried chicken are the dinner mainstays, but the pancakes and rice pudding steal the show. Kids can even have a tasty bowl of oatmeal.

NoRTH is distinctive, and not just in its name's unusual letter arrangement. The restaurant offers a taste of modern Italy without the cost of a plane ticket, and with its metropolitan ambiance – fine leather booth seating, wood floors and open, brick interior, city dwellers will be right at home. NoRTH is an experience waiting to happen to you. The lunch, dinner, and wine menus are all extensive and takeout orders are available, but come with a craving so deciding doesn't take all night! -Theresa Ludwick

Noodles is not the best sit down restaurant in the Cherry Creek area (although there are quite a few tables and chairs), but it is great for a quick fix. For delicious fondues and rotisseries, this restaurant located at the posh Luna hotel is a good pick. Dim lighting and tables for two make it perfect for a romantic meal too. The prime rib, pork and chicken rotisseries as well as the Cheddar Cheese Fondue come highly recommended. In all that coochie-cooing, don't forget to save room for dessert - especially the Chocolate Fondue.

This family owned pizzeria is a real find. Pictures lining the wall trace the owner's family history, and old record jackets from the 1970s and 1960s hold the menu. You can choose from an array of innovative, thin crust specialty pizzas, including the all veggie Berkley, or build your own creation. Calzones and pasta round out the menu. Beer and wine are available. The hours listed are tentative, because the owners like to say they close when they get tired.

Think Titanic without the waves (or the iceberg): Denver's Ocean Restaurant is large on atmosphere and extravagant in appointment, with several nautical (but nice) dining venues to choose from, including the Galley for relaxed gatherings, intimate alcoves for elegant, romantic preludes, and a backroom, called the Captain's Quarters, for private parties. Seascapes adorn the walls throughout, while maple furnishings provide a rich complement. Arched ceilings, painted with blue sky and clouds, combine to create a feeling of both luxury and whimsy. Also think fresh seafood when walking through Ocean's doors, and a great wine list that brings out the subtleties of the sea's bounty. -Theresa Ludwick

Sparsely furnished and dimly lit with candles, the small bar has a romantic aura but the crowds, especially on the weekends, quickly turn your attention to other things, like drinking and dancing. Qdoba is not the place to go if you are in search of a relaxed meal and quiet conversation. Too many people know about the grill's fabulous burritos to make the lines anything but lengthy, and the stark surroundings can be an acoustical nightmare. Five locations are scattered about the city. The Poblano Pesto burrito - a massive wrap of grilled chicken smothered with poblano chile pesto, is the king of the 14-item menu. Beware of the extra hot salsa. It is not just a name; these habanero chillies screamed when they were picked and have been looking for revenge ever since!

Serving authentic Szechuan and Mandarin cuisine, Red Coral is a popular spot for lunch (especially on the weekends) or dinner. The dining room is open and the staff is friendly. Lunch is particularly inexpensive. For a tasty change, try the spicy Jumbone Soup. It has a nice bite, and with all those noodles is almost a meal in itself. The panini sandwiches are just as popular. All food is counter-ordered. Other location: 745 Colorado Boulevard, +1 303 321 8353.

Wander down to this sports bar if you want to watch your favorite team, for it offers five big screen televisions. A typical bar food menu offers big portions at small prices, making it perfect for groups. Bronco fans fill up the room on Sundays in autumn, so beware of showing other team allegiances; the people here are overbearingly obnoxious with their Bronco adoration. The rooftop patio bar provides refuge from the sports scene and a dance floor draws an older crowd on Friday and Saturday nights.

With small wooden booths, crumpled piles of daily newspapers on the end of the bar, and a neighborhood location, this little gem embodies the look and feel of a true local's corner tavern. A typical bar and grill menu features burgers and fries, as well as several specialty sandwiches, such as the grilled ahi sandwich. Outdoor seating under a large green awning is available, but the tables do fill quickly during the summer, especially with dog owners.

This local hangout brings together all the essentials of a neighborhood coffeehouse. Art on the walls, interesting conversation and a great cappuccino make St. Mark's one of Denver's cultural hubs. There's always someone enjoying the patio and on nice days they slide open the garage door bringing in the fresh air and bringing together this coffeehouse and the neighborhood. Try one of their great paninis or sample from their wide selection of drinks from tea to beer. If you're looking for more, ask who's playing downstairs – there's a basement venue for local music.

There are so many different rooms in this coffee house, rumor has it that food is sold not to be eaten but for leaving a trail of crumbs for orientation purposes. The back rooms, a popular hang out with University of Denver students, features stacked bookshelves and mismatched tables. The huge front deck area is perfect for socializing. In addition to the usual coffee shop menu of hybrid cappuccinos, espressos, and herbal teas, the shop also sells pastries, sandwiches, fruit drinks and even a large variety of bulk coffee beans.

Step into the time warp that is Steuben's, and allow yourself to be transported back to the golden days. It is hard to miss out on the charm of the metal chairs, woody tables and panels, linoleum floors and dim lighting on both, the front and back patios. In keeping with the razzmatazz is the traditional American fare, comprising delicious fried chicken, the nightly special meatloaf, piping hot macaroni & cheese and chunky cheeseburgers. Fruity cocktails enhance the meal; those who prefer a more alcoholic accompaniment could choose from the competent wine list. Bring the gang along for some unbeatable deviled eggs and thin, crunchy french fries that they will not forget for a long time! Note that this place is absolutely packed on weekends, so make sure you come in early.

Alas, a steakhouse that does not have a cartoon cowboy on its menu with a speech balloon above its head saying, 'howdy pardner.' Instead, this restaurant, with its dark wood interior, drips with class and highbrow elegance. The menu features the elite of the meat world. Porterhouse steak , New York strip and filet mignon are just a few of its offerings. There are also several seafood dishes including salmon, swordfish and ahi tuna. The wine menu is massive. This dining room sports a definite sea theme, including a small canal along the sushi bar which the chef uses to float customers their orders-the dining world's version of Venice meets Japan. The restaurant recently hired a new sushi chef from Beverly Hills to liven up the menu and the results have been positive. The menu consists mainly of sushi, but it also offers chicken teriyaki and other Americanized versions of Japanese food. The sushi menu is extensive.

This restaurant is one of the more popular places to go for sushi in Denver. Its menu also offers tempura, teriyaki, and a variety of traditional Japanese soups like Udon, but the sushi is the best bet. The atmosphere borders on chaotic: patrons crowd just inside the door; the hostesses, waiters and waitresses fly around in a frenzy, and the sheer noise from the dining room borders on overwhelming. But it brings out the local trendsetters and is the place to be seen. Lunchtime, however, is more relaxed.

Do not come to this restaurant in search of the best sushi in town, but by all means go ahead and try the tasty and hearty Miso soup garnished with tofu and seaweed. The teriyaki is a good choice as well, if you like chicken on the sweet side. The atmosphere is casual, although it sometimes feels a bit rushed. The decor is modern but aging. Red brick walls contrast with sleek black tables and matching chairs, preserving precious pieces of the city's historic past. The menu features a host of wood-fired individual pizzas that many claim to be the best in Denver. There are plenty of sandwiches to choose from too, including a Philly cheesesteak and a towering rueben.

This upscale seafood and steakhouse is perfect for a romantic evening or a gathering with friends. The low-lit dining room boasts a forest of dark wood creating an elegant but relaxing ambiance. Crab cakes and lobster quesadillas make for good starters, or opt for the Blue Point oysters on the half shell. Dinner selections include lobster, trout, crab and halibut. Although the steaks are tasty, especially the filet mignon, they by no means compare to the seafood offerings. Finish your meal with a homemade dessert.

Have you ever despaired of finding a place, especially a barbecue joint, where your herbivore and carnivore friends could graze side-by-side in contentment? The answer to your dilemma is this Plain-Jane BBQ palace, serving juicy ribs and grilled tofu with equal skill. A long-time Denver favorite, Wolfe's hickory-smoked creations are cooked to perfection then served with the sweet and spice sauces on the side. You can order pork, beef, and chicken, as well as smoked and grilled tofu. The vegetarian baked beans are also mouthwatering.

Located in the Denver Pavilions, this café is one of the many trendy bistro chains now dominating downtown and LoDo. Although the mammoth space could seat an army, expect to loiter about in a line waiting for a table. The menu is twice as long as the line outside and covers just about every cuisine known, including a potent selection of Asian and American offerings. But the pizzas, baked in a wood-burning oven, usually satisfy the palettes of everyone. The wine list offers some good selections at reasonable prices.

Serving some of the best Greek dishes in Denver in a relaxed atmosphere reminiscent of the sunny Mediterranean, Yanni's is one of the area's best-kept local secrets. Although the place tends to be noisy (especially on the weekends), the staff makes sure your dining experience is pleasant and comfortable. For appetizers, the Dalamaria and Tzatziki are good choices. The main entrées include seafood, kabobs, Pastitsio and rotisserie lamb. Of course, wonderful Greek desserts, such as Baklava and Galatoboureko, are available.

Yoisho

Go for the Gyoza!
7236 East Colfax Avenue
Denver, CO 80220
United States
+1 303 322 6265
Yoisho's is more renowned for what it does not offer, than for what it does. This East Colfax Japanese restaurant is a tiny spot (three tables and a short bar) that does not do sushi, does not do alcohol, does not accept checks or credit cards, and does not allow smoking. But what it does do has earned it a loyal and well-fed clientele who swear by the menu of mainly fried Japanese dishes. The Gyoza here are exceptional: small Japanese dumplings filled with meat, cabbage, and a mix of strong and tasty spices. This is Japanese comfort food.

Chef Patrick DuPays applies his creative streak to his preparations, and most patrons are more than satisfied with the result. This charming bistro-cum-crêperie allows you to stuff yourself with the likes of prosciutto-wrapped wild shrimp in tartare-mayonnaise sauce and tartine de chevre chaud—warm goat cheese on toast over fresh pesto and provencal tomatoes. The pork and cassoulet are other dishes of repute. Make sure you grab a bagful of breads, pancakes and pastries on your way out. What makes the joint different from others in its genre is the interactive staff and the value for money. Smokers are welcome here. Come and experience authentic French cuisine without unnecessary frills!
