Colorado history |

This popular tourist destination celebrates the historic year Colorado entered statehood in a rustic cowboy atmosphere adorned with aged wood, rusted iron, and slate. Despite the city setting it is definitely one of those "we-do-not-have-this-at-home" type restaurants. Choose from an array of classic dishes from the American West, including mouth-watering mountain bass, buffalo tenderloin and rack of lamb. Stop in for lunch and check out the theme buffet. Stepping into this dining-nugget is akin to taking a trip back to the American supper clubs of the 1930s. Dark wood, brass fixtures and retro neon signs create the desired effect here. Its martinis have been recognized by the local press as some of the best in Denver, making it a popular after-work stop. Choose from an array of dishes ranging from upscale steak and seafood selections to local favorites, such as the vegetarian burrito and Mexican steak. For dessert try the Chocolate Tortillas or Key Lime pie. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Spicy buffet |
1620 Wazee Street Denver, CO 80202 United States +1 303 571 1824 http://www.bdsmongolianbarbequ... |
This LoDo restaurant is an interesting experience: if you trust your own cooking! The restaurant's thing is to lie out a long, dizzying buffet of edible treats and have you collect your own choices. After you have picked out your meats, veggies, and sauces, you hand them to a chef who whips it onto a grill and cooks it before your eyes. This can be fun. It can also be a disaster if you do not choose wisely. The decor is warehouse chic with a wall of bricks and high, thick wood beams. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Trendy home cooking |
3472 West 32nd Avenue Denver, CO 80211 United States +1 303 455 1117 |
Bang! serves some great home-cooking, but with only a scattering of tables inside, seats are sometimes hard to find. The short, 10-item entrée menu seems sparse but allows cooks Jeff Oakley and Cissy Yin to serve masterful creations. The Meatloaf is superb and comes atop a pile of homemade mashed potatoes. Its thick and tasty hamburger is one of the best in the city. The soups are worthy of attention and are almost too pretty to eat. Special Cajun creations sometimes complement the regular menu (which can be found online at the official website). Review © 2007, Wcities |

A taste of New Orleans sizzling in the heart of downtown, Bayou Bob's specializes in heaping helpings of spicy Cajun and down-home comfort delights. Weekends are crowded: waits often exceed an hour, but the lively bar helps pass the time. If you find yourself having trouble deciding on one entrée, try one of the combination plates. Each one comes with a wide selection of Cajun standards, ranging from Gumbo and Jambalaya to Blackened Catfish and Red Beans and Rice. This rates very high with families. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located in Capitol Hill, this lively cantina is one of Denver's most popular Mexican restaurants. Prepare to wait for a table any night of the week, but the bar is comfortable and a great place to pass the time. The Grilled Chicken Burrito is a menu classic, or if you prefer the meat to be shredded, try the Smothered Burritos, which come doused in a mound of chile verde. The margaritas are recommended, and the starter chips and salsa are some of the best in town. Review © 2007, Wcities |

El Chapultepec, at first glance, is just another aging dive bar serving up traditional Mexican tastes on paper plates in downtown. Charlie Brown's is one of Denver's most diverse establishments. The bar has been a sanctuary for the Capitol Hill area for more than 35 years. Paul "Paulie" Lopez pounds out tunes on the piano, making it one of the only places in the city where young urban hipsters nestle up to the Sinatra crowd, sharing beer and bourbon over song. The menu covers a broad spectrum, offering salads, sandwiches, and more expensive fare like whole lobsters and peppered scallops pasta. But the house specialty, of course, is crab. King crab selections come in three hefty helpings, and are available steamed, barbecued or garlic-seared. Wednesdays feature all you can eat lobster. Review © 2007, Wcities |

What better spot for a date than a place named Duo! The cozy, intimate setting is just right when you want to enjoy a delicious meal undisturbed. A rather whimsical décor, with hardwood flooring and splashes of color, keeps the boredom from setting in. The all-American cuisine, samples of which include steamed mussels with chorizos and spices, Porter-braised pork stew, Flatiron steak, and lamb T-bone, banish thoughts of heavy burgers and greasy fries for a while. Once you are done with the main course, a big portion of chocolate hazelnut cake, or the specially-crafted Duo Apple Tart for Two should spice things up a bit! If you are here on a weekend, make sure you get a healthy dose of the Brunch menu—the basket of pastries & jams, with fresh-baked scones and sweet breads is unbeatable! Review © 2007, Wcities |

The weekend mariachi band and outdoor dining are the best aspects of a meal at El Noa Noa, but not because the food is so-so, but because it is so standard. Ragin' Cajun |

You may start speaking in a Cajun tongue involuntarily when you step through the doors of Gumbo's Louisiana Style Café/Bar/Restaurant (depending on your perception). It bills itself as a café; as a bar, the drinks are exceptionally reasonable; but restaurant seems to be the best description because either the lunch and dinner menus read like a good ole Louisiana boy's – or girl's – dream list. The Sweet Potato Catfish topped with sautéed crabmeat and spinach will transport you to 'Nawlins quicker than Kirk's transporter. Maria's offers one of the more interesting settings for dining in the metro area. Located in north Denver, the popular spot is an old house converted into a restaurant. Even the carriage house contains a seating area. Lunch is the only meal available and Maria's giant sandwiches, made with her scrumptious, thick-sliced homemade bread, fill the menu. The soup of the day comes in a paper cup, but is usually delicious nonetheless. There is a good selection of sandwiches: meatloaf, tuna salad, turkey and boned chicken to name the favorites. The brownies and cookies are great to go. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Amidst all the tony restaurants and pulsing dance rooms on Larimer Street this gourmet deli lends a nice change of pace. Plank floors, wooden shelves filled with tea and coffee, and old-counters give it a look and feel more suited to the 1940s, but in a mysteriously hip way. The outdoor sidewalk tables are perfect perches for people watching. Pastry, bagels and breakfast burritos are popular morning choices. The lunch and dinner menu offers a variety of hot and cold sandwiches, and fresh deli salads. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Located in what was once Denver's red light district, this American bistro has preserved the elegant structure of a historical building, known as the "House of Mirrors," that used to operate as a brothel. The lunch menu focuses on salads and sandwiches, but also offers a fine selection of entrees including the Cilantro Chicken Stuffed Raviolis. The knockout dinner menu presents a superb offering of baby back ribs with garlic mashed potatoes. The herb roasted chicken rates high as well. The wine and cognac lists are excellent too. Taking an old staple – hamburger – and creating a new dining experience, Max Burgerworks is banking on the idea that with 20 different burger offerings there'll be 20 different reasons for your return. Salmon and vegetarian burgers are offered as well to cover all the health-conscious bases, and hormone-free beef is used on the real thing. Try the Southwestern Burger, with pepper jack, chipotle mayonnaise and onion rings, or one of their alternative-meat hamburgers like the Bison Burger. The owner of Mercury Café calls it a community center. The cafe exudes a vague hippie aura and serves as a restaurant, bakery, coffeehouse, dance club and concert hall. It is hard to pinpoint the exact style of this eclectic nightspot, serving up everything from Celtic and Cajun to theater and poetry. Swing and salsa bands are regulars on the second floor, which accommodates 350. The main dining room might feature a concert pianist one evening and a string quartet the next. The dinner menu offers salads, sandwiches, pasta dishes and steak. Review © 2007, Wcities |

The main thing to know about this restaurant is to not judge it by its woefully plain exterior. The interior whacks you with a "wow-this-is-nice" surprise and is highlighted by a glowing aquarium. And, perhaps, best of all, this "growing-in-popularity" gem serves some of the tastiest Japanese food in the city. Though a chain, this downtown mainstay has the feel of a homegrown brewery and restaurant that just so happens to be very large. The patio, one of its main attractions, is huge and abuts the 16th Street Mall making it ideal for people looking. It brews its own beer that feature curious names such as the Lumpy Dog Light Lager and Molly's Titanic Brown Ale. The menu, for brewery standards, is excellent and offers steaks, pastas and pizzas. Pool tables fill the back bar area. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Situated in the heart of lively downtown Denver, just across from the courthouse, the Rocky Mountain Diner is a popular lunch destination for the business class as well as a hot spot for dinner. The lunch menu covers an assortment of salads and sandwiches for fewer than eight bucks, while the meaty dinner menu focuses on local specialties like rainbow trout and buffalo meatloaf. The chicken fried chicken will put a couple of extra pounds on you, and the Duck Enchiladas are a creative delight. A few Colorado microbrews are on tap. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Even after a much-needed renovation, the Rosa Linda Café still has the tawdry charm that regulars have come to expect. The coats of paint did not displace the murals and paintings that create such ambiance. The place is still family-operated with love and care. The award-winning shredded beef burritos highlight the menu and the green chili elevates Mexican grub into an art form (not to be compared with that on the walls), making the chili rellenos another delight. It rates as extremely family-friendly. Review © 2007, Wcities |

At La Rumba, formerly known as 9th Avenue West, sultry salsa dancing takes center stage. Within this spacious and colorful club, decorated down to the bathrooms with art from Picasso and his contemporaries, comfortable couches and sleek tables line the slick-tiled floor which gives way to salsa dancing through the night. This is one of Denver's few clubs that will make you feel out of place if you enter in T-shirt and shorts; dress is very classy. Free salsa dance lessons are given Thursday and Saturday nights at 9:30p. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Add this restaurant to your list if you are looking for a classy atmosphere complete with romantically dim lighting, a full bar and an extensive wine list. Steaks, obviously, rule the menu and are accompanied by side dishes of steamed vegetables or baked potatoes that are big enough to share. Fish and poultry options are offered as well. Outdoor dining is available when the weather permits, and its valet service takes the hassle out of downtown parking. Review © 2007, Wcities |

Once upon a time, there was a restaurant in Denver. Started by an entrepreneur in the 1920s, it was called Coney Island, third in a chain of five, and it served good old comfort food. Over 70 years later, the restaurant reopened a few doors down under the management of the original restaurateur's grandsons. Sam's No. 3 still serves the same comforting food "with an attitude." Plunge into the Kitchen Sink Skillet for breakfast, while enjoying the simple, nostalgia-inducing interior. American, Greek, and Mexican fare await you at servings that exceed the prices nicely. -Theresa Ludwick Review © 2007, Wcities |

Specialty dishes worthy of mention are the Spanish Paella ($25.95), and the Grilled Beef Tenderloin ($26.95). Wander down to this sports bar if you want to watch your favorite team, for it offers five big screen televisions. Step into the time warp that is Steuben's, and allow yourself to be transported back to the golden days. This snappy restaurant has done an outstanding job of carving a "look-at-me" type niche by offering highbrow Mexican fare in a highbrow setting. It might possibly be the only Mexican restaurant that does not boast of award winning margaritas. It instead offers an outstanding wine list. The massive tile mural behind the bar immediately indicates that this place is special. The menu adds to this feel by offering dishes such as Halibut with Spicy Chipolte and Filet Mignon with Guacamole. This rates high as a good place to impress. A sweet neighborhood eating place is the Dish Bistro in Denver's Uptown district. This place gives new meaning to the word, eclectic, calling the restaurant's varied selections, "comfort food." But don't be fooled by the description. There's much more than mashed potatoes and gravy. In fact, there's neither of those!
